Yes, submitter, rock music existed only as a fuzzy, unfinished concept until Fall Out Boy came along to define it.

Ok fine, the 90s had some stinkers (Boyz II Men, N'Sync I am looking at you) but Stone Temple Pilots and Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden. Just to name the mainstream bands, are better strung-out, hungover and/or dead than most of what's on rock radio today.

HulkHands [TotalFark] 2008-04-09 10:58:44 AM
Don't worry, in another 5 years it will be chic to like the 90s just like it was chic to like the 80s in 2003

Thanks to iPods and mp3s, rock music is more diverse and interesting than it was in the 90s. That being said, clearly smitty forgot about Rage Against the Machine.

I_C_Weener [TotalFark] 2008-04-09 11:39:17 AM
Music is cyclical.

1950's some good, but mostly just a new genre finding itself.

1960s music took off.

1970s music took 5 steps back, and to the left in a white leisure suit.

1980s we all soared to the new techno music and hard rock music that is as timeless as the big hair.

1990s music was not only described as grunge, so was the talent that created it. And lysol was the only thing that could do anything good with grunge.

2000s are in a post grunge hangover that started in the mid-90s with the death of that one guy and devolved into Disney crap.

Sybarite [TotalFark] 2008-04-09 11:39:59 AM
In the mid to late 80s I was turned on to groups like The Melvins, Screaming Trees, and Mudhoney; and soon started spreading tapes to all the people I knew who were also sick of the dominance of hair metal in rock. I figured grunge (which I didn't know to call it at the time) would remain a relatively underground phenomenon and that was fine. I was surprised as fark when they started playing on mainstream rock radio and MTV. It didn't take long for it to be ludicrously over-commercialized, followed by the inevitable backlash (the documentary Hype! is a really cool look at the phenomenon). It's too bad it quickly descend into those godawful post-grunge acts, but that doesn't change the fact that people were making some really solid rock-n-roll. I remember Core and Dirt coming out on the same day, bought 'em both and still listen to them sometimes.

I've never understood why 70's music gets classified under a single genre that really only had mainstream success for about the last three years of the decade. Let's not forget Sabbath, Nugent, Zeppelin, etc.

You mean Stone Gossard of The Temple Of The Dog Pilots?

the 90's was the decade of the suck

Subster, when you get tired of listening to your Against Me! records, go see a TOOL concert. Leave the lysol at home.

cambie [TotalFark] 2008-04-09 12:24:41 PM
FAIL. The 90's were one of the best decades for Music since the 60's. The 70's were pretty good (excluding disco) and the 80's were the decade of suck. Now go back to gym class and look forward to your mom picking you up after school.

GurneyHalleck [TotalFark] 2008-04-09 12:26:21 PM
Nirvana is one of the most overrated bands in the history of rock and roll. Second only to Alice in Chains. At least Kurt wrote some interesting lyrics.

As for the 90's sucking, subby needs to buy some discs by Tool, Primus, Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Black Crowes, etc. Compared to the shiat pouring from the waste pipe of the music industry these days, the 90's was like a hard rock renaissance.

I know, and disco survived until about 1983. But even without disco there was Carly Simon and James Taylor crap that outnumbered the good hard rock of that era. And bands like Tom Petty and Aerosmith really got big after that decade...same with Ozzie.

The '90s were good because of the 4th best Chili Peppers' record and a Radiohead record that got no airplay?

I can think of a hundred good songs from the '90s, but I still think submitter's right about it sucking in general. Even a lot of the good songs got ruined by Unplugged.

STRYPERSWINE 2008-04-09 02:07:27 PM
Yeah, well I've been up and been down, town to town with several bands,
Then tortured for ten long years by critics, agents and the A&R man, and some bandwagon fans.
It's time to stand up, fight back, be proud and once again be free,
So if you want a piece of me, come and get it!

Kurt Cobain is gone but I'm back
Wearing leather pants and a backwards hat
Guitars slung low
Where the down boys go
The night trains back so on with the show
I'm Metal Health
And dressed to thrill
I'm an SMF with the looks that kill
I rocked and rolled, n' long hair is back
And I grew up, singing Strutter, And Back, in Black
I'm going back to eighty-nine
I went Platinum zero times
You're in the jungle sweet child o'mine
I want another piece of that cherry pie

Chorus #1: (Oooooohhhhhh)
They call 'em hairbands
Leather jacket in black
Throw your hands in the air
Yeah we're bringing it back
N' Say (Shout, Shout) At the Devil again
And Say (Shout, Shout) At the Devil my friend
So Say (Shout, Shout) never letting it end and say (Shout, Shout, Shout, Shout) yeah...(Bad Medicine)

I like Old Van Halen and Hanoi Rocks
Black n' Blue and Britny Fox
Guns n' Roses, Motley Crue
When Def Leppard rocked and Skid Row ruled
Yeah, Ratt went round n' round
Rocking out in Boston, get loud in Chi-town
Vandenberg, Priest, Dok-ken, Kix
Throwing Faster Pussycat in the mix (P-P-P-P-P-Pussycat)
Give me L.A. Guns & The Dangerous Toys
Quiet Riot, Bang Tango & Bullet Boys
Love Johnny Crash, grunge bands are trash
I like C.C. DeVille, Mick Mars, and Slash

Chorus: #2

Breakdown:
Yeah, I saw your grunge band, staring at your shoes on stage, wearing that dirty flannel shirt,
when you gonna learn dirtball, you just can't f**k with Twisted Sister.
"What are you going to do with your life"?

I'm an American hairband
Watch me rock
You can raise your hands
Or you can suck my c**k
Heavy Metal God
I'm a Pin-up boy
I'm the singer from Tuff not Pretty Boy Floyd
Super loud and Super wild
Sebastian Bach is youth gone wild
Diamond Dave and Nikki Sixx
I wanna see Tommy Lee back spinning those sticks
Up all night, gonna sleep all day
I love girls, girls, girls and I love L.A.
I won't waste my breath, but here's a clue
Give Pearl Jam & Eddie a big f**k you
Who cares about Weezer and the Screeming Trees
When we got White Lion
And of course the Sleeze Beez
If you wanna rock n' roll then read my lips
Let's shout it out loud
For a band named KISS

Chorus: (Oooooohhhhhh)
They call 'em hairbands
Wearing leather and black
So throw your hands in the air
Now we're bringing it back
N' Say (Shout, Shout) At the Devil again
And Say (Shout, Shout) At the Devil my friend
So Say (Shout, Shout) never letting it end and say (Shout, Shout, Shout, Shout) yeah,

I'm a hairband wanted dead or alive
Singing (Shout, Shout, Shout, Shout)
I wanna rock n' roll in the still of the night
Say (Shout, Shout, Shout, Shout)
Gonna take you down to the Paradise city
And (Shout, Shout, Shout, Shout)
Everybody let's sing talk dirty to me

FTFY.

us to this day.

My blue doc marten high tops and orange-red flannel shirt vehemently disagree subby!

Nirvana will always hold a special place in my heart. I was on my way to buy a frickin' Firehouse CD when I heard "Smells like teen spirit". My whole musical taste changed. Bye bye Warrant and Slaughter, sh*t you guys suck.

meteorite 2008-04-09 02:14:49 PM
I remember when STP was brand spankin new. I also remember thinking "wow, they sound like a more pop-rock version of Pearl Jam." After years to compare the two I'm amazed at how correct first impressions can be.

T.rex 2008-04-09 02:15:09 PM
i sort of shocked that someone doesn't like Nirvana. It would be like someone in my generation not like Zeppelin just because it was older.

Let me reiterate subby's point:

60s music > 70s music > 80s music > 90s music

meteorite 2008-04-09 02:18:07 PM
Also, just for the record, if I hear Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium, or In Bloom on the radio one more time I'm going to dig Kurt's body up and personally blow his head off. Yes, those songs were revolutionary at the time. That time has past. I'm tired of hearing stuff that was great when I was in middle/high school. That stuff has turned into the annoying crap that's been overplayed that it replaced years ago. Let's try something new now, shall we? Please?

Enomai 2008-04-09 02:21:52 PM
This decade sucks more than any other decade I can think of. Personally though, I wish that Nirvana wasn't the band that was always carted out to exemplify "grunge". That said, I have never cared much for STP.

SUBBY
You have some explaining to do.
I believe a list of what you consider "music" would be appreciated.
Time to put your money where your mouth is....or I guess in this case it would be put your music where your keyboard is

Truly the music that you grew up to in your high school and college years will almost always be the music you define as the best.

Side note...it hurt a lot to hear RHCP's "Under The Bridge" as a retro rewind a few weeks ago(they only play songs 10 years or older and I know that its older than that but still)
