Pretty much this. There's a liner note in Pretty Hate Machine, and I assume in every other NIN album: "Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails."

Though NIN hasn't made a decent album since TDS I'd have to say that The Beatles are the most overrated band ever, followed very closely by Led Zeppelin.

NIN should've stopped after PHM though

Finck was also the musical director of Cirque de Soleil for a couple of years. Cirque seems to get some talented musicians capable of executing the corporate vision.

Translation: he's not Slash, but he'll do whatever the fark Reznor tells him to do.

I've kind of wondered what all the hate was for this album. Granted, I could understand not liking it if you weren't all that familiar with Industrial, but it seems like plenty of longtime fans hated it as well.

I like Ghosts as well. Nice incidental music. Though I'm a little pissed that they seemed to imply that it was an online-only kind of thing. It's $10 at Best Buy.

nubian please, Zepplin has a few albums worth of good material. I don't think they ever bothered to put it on one album though.

The Beach Boys did everything The Beatles did, only before the Beatles.

Trent Reznor is about as interesting as watching paint dry.

And if the rest of those Beach boys would have listened to Brian Wilson, they would have released "SMILE" when it was supposed to be released, beating SERGEANT PEPPER'S to the punch.

Oh Lord, another NIN thread. It's becoming a fark cliche? But it's fun.

NO, Trent is not God. No, NIN is not in the same category as the Beatles for farks sake. No, NIN doesn't suck in the way that Brittany Spears or or the Black Eyed Peas do. Yes, they have some good songs.

NIN is a decent "band" that put out a few good songs on a few albums. NIN isn't crap, and it isn't SUPER COOL, either.

But, yes, I think the last few albums have been super duper boring. It's like someone said in the Korn thread. That Korn is even around is impressive, that they made an impact at all is important. So what the new stuff isn't so good, they put out some good stuff.

Same with NIN.

Now, really, to put The Beatles or Led Zep the Beach Boys in THAT category is completely retarded. This isn't a debate about "how much I like this band" but it's a debate about the comparative merits of a band given all the other one's out there, the degree of influence, the level of songwriting, the technique, the quality of the musicianship, etc.

NIN does not belong in the same category as the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and Led Zep. I'm sure Trent would agree (unless he's trying to act cool for an interview)

I'm not sure why NIN shows up on fark so often, but whatever, I like NIN, so it makes it easy to stay in the loop. That said, these threads are almost always identical, I don't know why I bother to read them.

Necrosis: I'm not sure why NIN shows up on fark so often

Maybe NIN appeals to the basement dwelling, "I'm hurt" and "I'll show you! *sniff* I'll take some DRUGS! *cry*" crowd? I dunno.

NOT to say that ALL NIN fans are of this sort. Just that there are a lot of them. They're the one's still dressing like Trent Reznor...

FileUnderCS 2008-04-09 02:07:11 PM
I like NIN although less and less as the years go by. PHM was an accidental masterpiece. Everything after has had its ups and downs, but I will still say that I generally like what he's doing.

All that said, let me just point out (again) that Reznor pretty much lifted his whole act from this guy:

Let's give credit where credit is due.

I probably know more about 'the history of music' than you. Then again when I think 'music history' I think more of classical music. The Beatles were a pop band, their lyrics and music are very mediocre to me at best. Just because someone doesn't like the farking Beatles doesn't mean 'they don't understand music or it's history'. The thing that irritates me more than The Beatles or Led Zeppelin are the douchbags who WORSHIP them and think everyone who doesn't like them is stupid. People have differing opinions of music. I may be young (born in 79 TYVM) but at least I figured THAT out.

I got the digital download for Ghosts I-IV. I wasn't crazy about Year Zero but I've got pretty much all his other stuff so I thought why not. Ghosts III seems to be the best so far, especially the tracks with the improvised drumming. Needs a few more listens. But 320kbps DRM-free artwork-embedded MP3s for $5? That's a lot of WIN.

/yes, I know I could have got it via torrent for $0

For all the doubters

Sgt Peppers came out in 67, Pet sounds came out in 66. Do a little google action and you can find pleanty of quotes form Paul and John about how Pet Sounds changed everything and inspired them to do what they did. Brian Wilson was a true master.

Oh yeah, and blah blah blah Trent Reznor sucks.

and PHM is easily NIN's worst. Had it been released by anyone else, it would've been "That cheesy Depeche Mode rip-off". (Not that it doesn't have a few good tracks, just it sounds dated as all fark)

It does now. But there's a reason it (and the demos that predate it) attracted so much attention back then.

revolver came out in 66 too, and its musically WAY ahead of pet sounds on every level-so im not sure what point youre trying to make. just because BW inspired them doesnt mean his output is superior[its not, although its really good].

the closest he got to a beatles level of sophistication was 'smile', and as great as that is its not even close to what the beatles were doing at the exact same time.

I think NIN topped out at THe Fragile. That thing is a masterpiece and the live DVD of them touring on that album is freaking amazing. Since then Trent has been a huge hit and miss. Ghosts is good and probably his best work since The Fragile but still not on par with it.
