Well, the guy is a little past his prime. Glad to have heard him on his way into his prime.

He was over sixty and in really poor health. I think he earned a pass on that one.

Will someone please explain to me how an orchestra can pantomime to a recording and be the least bit convincing?

Tee hee, I got the reference!

It isn't pantomime.
Orchestra played along with the recording but the mics on stage weren't turned on. Conductor was getting a click track so the timing stayed consistent. Playback monitors were under the stage grid facing up or coming across as side fill. The audience was far enough away that they couldn't hear the actual on-stage sound- just the huge flown sound system hidden behind the red drapes to downstage left and right.

I don't think that performance fooled many who know the score (ow).

The real deal:
Royal Albert Hall 1982 (new window)

This can make you cry, I swear. I once saw a show wherein they displayed oscilloscope readings of his voice. It showed two distinct resonant peaks; most people have one, or so the show stated. This was the source of his beautiful ring. Some prefer Domingo and I really dig Jussi Bjorling, but the Maestro was very, very special.

And the feat that made him famous. Start listening at about 55 sec:

That's like saying Lance Armstrong once used training wheels.

il Dottore: Thanks for the info. I was reacting to the conductor's quote from the article: "The orchestra pretended to play for the public there, I pretended to conduct and Luciano pretended to sing." I assume, as you say, that they did actually play, but in a very understated way so not to conflict with the loudspeakers.

Bollocks
Cheap shot

He rocked like no rocker ever can.

RIP Luciano....we miss ya!

Uh, he was dying. Unable to stand for extended periods, and too physically unwell to sing in the cold weather that late at night.

Is "impending death from pancreatic cancer" not a good enough excuse for you? Then it's hard to know what would be.

Uh, HappyHarryHardOn, I know you're trying real hard to be a good troll, but there's a fine line between being a good troll and just making a sad, sad ass of yourself.

Congrats, you found that line.

He should't have gone on stage if he couldn't perform. Not being able to perform isn't the issue, it's the deception.
