Probably the history faculty at Liberty University and Hillsdale College.

Aw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. Forfty percent of all people know that.

There is a fairly big margin between "right" and "worst ever". "Worst ever" is something that I would have guessed wouldn't be apparent for at least 10-15 years after he's gone.

I'm sure "Historians" know about "history" about as much as "Scientists" know about "science"! And with all that liberal nonsense that the Scientists have fed us about evolutionism, and global warming, and heliocentricity, and gravity, can we really trust that Historians aren't part of the same liberal conspiracy trying to undermine our Lord's dominion over His Creation?

Fred Kagan was mostly kooky before he left West Point, but since joining the AEI... yeah, creepy fits pretty well.

Funny how he admitted to me that the war in Iraq was going to completely break the National Guard.

These are the people Lincoln left out in his speech: they are the ones who fool themselves all of the time. I.e., fools.

Worthless. In no way could Bush be the 'worst president ever'. I think that award goes solely to Warren G Harding, the guy who said "I am not fit for this office and should never have been here." He was damn right on that point; he did nothing in office except play golf and fark his mistress. His administration sold out the country and looted our treasury in ways that Bush could only dream of.

I wish that Bush restricted himself to simply that. Destablizing the Middle East even further, resulting in the murder of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and more than 4,000 of your own troops is simply catastrophic. I think we'd all be happier if he had simply stayed at Crawford Ranch and refused to meddle in international affairs.

Bush is responsible for more American deaths than Osama bin Laden. Really think about that for a moment.

Shaggy_C: I think that award goes solely to Warren G Harding, the guy who said "I am not fit for this office and should never have been here."

So he was honest about himself. That counts for something. If Bush said that he'd move up a notch in my book. To notch 1.

Anyway, to determine the worst President ever, wouldn't we have to go forward in time to the end of the nation's existence?

Shaggy_C 2008-04-06 10:24:32 PM
WFern: Bush is responsible for more American deaths than Osama bin Laden. Really think about that for a moment.

And Lyndon Johnson was responsible for many, many more. I don't think that is an appropriate metric for judging the efficacy of a presidency. If it t'were, Lincoln would be our greatest failure as a president.

Surprised no mention of this yet:

They want to stack him up against his thirty-three predecessors as the nation's chief executive.

SpyroChiro 2008-04-06 10:30:32 PM
Bush is the worst in my lifetime...and from history, I would say he is the worst I have ever heard about.

-The damage to the Constitution - we're almost a dictatorship
-The war (millions of innocents dying for no reason)
-Political lawyer firings (coincidentally in swing states)
-Katrina
-Cheney
-10 Trillion in debt

I'm sorry, but Warren G. Harding ain't got nothin' on the amount of innocent people who have suffered at the hands of this scumbag.

I'm with Naomi Wolfe, I think he and Cheney should be tried for treason the second they step out of office.

Two thoughts (feel free to disagree):

1. Johnson was a sorry excuse for a president, his civil rights initiatives aside. It's sickening that Nixon was the perhaps the most common sense as far as Vietnam was concerned. I'd compare LBJ to McCain in this day and age.

2. Lincoln did indeed take us into a costly war, but a worthy one. This may be my fault for not explaining what I meant. The Civil War, World War II, etc were certainly more costly than Iraq as far as American lives are concerned, but they were moral and rather common-sense maneuvers. I'd contend the occupation of Iraq is neither.

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2008-04-06 10:33:59 PM
Problem with a subject like this is figuring when people are being sarcastic and when they're being serious. Because the first reaction to anyone coming to Bush's defense at this point is just about always going to be "you've got to be kidding!" Though I'd like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, I know there are still a handful of true believers with an unshakable allegiance to the guy.

MickCollins 2008-04-06 10:35:49 PM
Pretty shiatty historians if they are gauging success before the guy is out of office. Most say it takes atleast 50 years to gauge the success of a president. At the time, people thought FDR was the greatest ever. Then people analyzed everything over time and hes slipped.

Enemabag Jones 2008-04-06 10:36:00 PM

Great question. I guess depends if you are talking in the moment or your memory years after you die.

Lincon, or even Hitler is one of those where the 'facts' of their life could have clearly went the other way if other people had wrote the judgments.
