So basically the band has branched out into business ventures and has, in effect, become a company.

Not that anyone would call it selling out or anything ;)

Radiohead can do what they want, but you gotta see the irony in a band that walks away from corporations to become one.

I don't think setting up a website for your fans is selling out.

Well someone has to do the marketing and shiat, right? And at least their music is still pretty good.

Urinating is considered selling out to some people. You can't do anything as a musician without someone calling you a sellout.

That implies that the music has ever been good.

I don't care for it, myself.

Just because you don't like them, doesn't mean they suck at making music.

For example, there are many Metallica fans, but they suck at making music.

I remember on the audiogalaxy website, on the messageboard for the Radiohead page, people were discussing what makes a band a sellout. The bar got higher and higher until it practically became only playing the song once, for yourself with nobody around to hear it and no record of it ever occurring. I stopped following the discussion, but it's logical that it progressed onto never even thinking of a song, and probably being a musician that was never born.

I still don't understand the concept of selling out. It's basically a dysphemism for any successful band you don't like. Wait a second. Here we go.

I'm a self-produced, self-funded musician. I've had no contact with any major label ever. My music has received no reviews from any publication, nor any radio or TV airplay. I have never been sponsored by anyone, and my songs have never been featured in a commercial or any other advertisement for anything.

I am the opposite of a sellout. Prove your allegiance. Buy my record.

The first four Metallica records are better than anything Radiohead has ever done.

I know the Pitchfork crowd all fap to Radiohead, but most of them have to be in home room in the morning, so it's not like they have been around much.

Radiohead is ok, BTW. They have hardly had the impact that Metallica has, though.

The whole "here's a free remix development kit, show us what you fans can do! Except the kit's useless and a bunch of big-name musical artists are going to compete, too" is a pretty big sham by Radiohead.

I like Holy F**k, and damn there is no way any fool with a pirated copy of Ableton is going to top what they did.

Holy F@#k? The indy rock electronica band? I will take a pass on them. I saw A Place to Bury Strangers open for them. It seemed like the crowd didn't much get the early-Jesus and Mary Chain kicked up to 11, rock your face off thing. But throw down a cheesy beat and some keyboards and they danced like it was going out of style.

/I hope we are talking about the same thing.

I'm everything you said, with a few reviews and local radio play under my belt - and my stuff is free (new window).

And to me it sounds like Radiohed have started what we used to call a messageboard. Why does it have to be referred to as a social networking site?

Hmm, a metal band who've sold a lot of records, or a band that's considered almost as influential as the Beatles. I suppose it's how you define "impact", but to me just selling a lot of records isn't it.

Who said Radiohead is almost as influential as the Beatles? And also i think Metallica has had an impact on alot of metal bands that are around right now if you asked them.

Uber_Controller 2008-04-07 11:00:01 AM
the "muse is a radiohead clone" argument is as ludicrous as the "pearl jam were imitating nirvana" one. maybe there once was a similarity between thom and matt's voices (i'm talking pre-OK Computer) but the rest of the parallels drawn are just drivel.

this argument was a lazy reporter's doing back when muse first started, and unfortunately it stuck. but anyone who takes just a moment to listen to their respective bodies of work will realise there's little, i'll even venture to say - no comparison.

/rant ends. going home.
/however, in terms of awesomeness, these two bands are quite alike.

This! Exactly. The whole "Radiohead clone" claim can be beaten down by actually listening to the music.
