Agreed. There is only one race: the human race. But racism isn't some form of misanthropy, the only way to understand it is that it's the belief in a wide category of different human races. The fact that these differences have no definition, as they are sometimes religious, sometimes cultural, and sometimes aesthetic is an absurdism that was, and still is by some, widely accepted. Neo-nazi's and other hate groups, obviously, stress these differences - sometimes all of them, sometimes just a few - as evidence of their own superiority.

The intent of these racists groups was simple, and clear. The fact that Islam is a religion, with many different cultures and people who look very different, is irrelevant to the hate groups. The fact that these were the graves of soldiers who fought for France is just as irrelevant. For the hate-mongers, it's not "what you do" that counts, it's "who you are". This is racism not because Islam is in anyway a different race, but because the people doing this are trying to make it one.

People like that don't exactly walk up and say "excuse me, are you an adherent of religion X? Because I hate religious figure Y for reason Z, and I'm going to proceed to defame you now". The very nature of people like this should give you a pretty good idea that they don't have a very rational basis for their hate. The only thing going through their minds is "us vs. them", and no matter who it is they're attacking or defaming, in their minds, they're "sticking it to them". Sure they may hate religions that they associate with their target group, but it's not the motivation, it's just another way of "sticking it to them", since "them" is an omnipresent, hive minded collective that exists in their heads. The subtleties of an individual's personal religious belief or practices don't concern these people, they're just as likely to attack someone based on their name, country of origin, or skin color just because, in their mind, anyone they're attacking is one of "them".

I can't speak from experience about Israel or other places with predominantly Jewish populations, but the Jewish culture is so strong and different from mainstream America that it does create a tangibly alien atmosphere. Not to mention the fact that English is a minority language by a long stretch.
