Now if they would bring back the original Walter's Beer (p) I'd be happy.

Great, all the hipsters can be cool drinking it in some bar in Wicker Park and complain about how crowded and over priced Lincoln Park is.

exvaxman [TotalFark] 2008-04-06 12:41:27 PM
As much as I would like to try it, I am part of the Pabst boycott over how they have treated their retirees. This is the WORST corporation ever. Just ask the US Government who had to step in and make them live up to their agreements. As well as Miller who produces for Pabst - who required them to fufill their payments into the union retirement fund (to the tune of millions) before they would brew anything for them.

curmudge 2008-04-06 01:06:44 PM
exvaxman I didn't know about that. I'm glad I stopped drinking PBR a long time ago.

You leave my beloved Lincoln Park out of it. Damn DePaul kids ruining everything!!!

Can't wait to try Schlitz like my dad drank in college.

Mmmm...factory piss.

Like AliceInWonderland said, they'll probably market to urban hipster douchebags in love with "authenticity". Keeping it real, like the people with actual jobs and stuff.

sootnthai 2008-04-06 04:49:19 PM
exvaxman I think the sale of pbr was banned for a while in Milwaukee, until the present company that brews it decided to make things right to the retirees that had been wronged. This was last year at some point I recall.

And yay for Schlitz.

I have such fond memories of Schlitz! It's what my father drank in the 1960s and early 70s. He used to let me have a sip from his cup when I was a kid, and thanks to him, I had no desire to imbibe in that foul tasting stuff until well after my 21st birthday (when Sam Adams finally arrived and it became safe to drink beer again).

Schlitz was actually second best selling beer brand in the U.S. until the mid 1970s when some poor business decisions led to a sharp decline.

They used to have live commercials during football games with 50 guys (Usually "regular" Bud or Miller or Coors drinkers) doing blind taste tests between Schlitz and their competitors (They went up against a different beer every week).

I really can't remember the results or even if the results were obviously fixed. But they showed some balls by putting their product up for judgement on live TV.

Malinki 2008-04-06 04:54:59 PM
Schlitz was the beer we had the first time we got busted drinking in high school.

Good times, good times.

I knew a couple of girls that went to the beach and were drinking beer. They got sand in their Shlitz.

D'Annunzio 2008-04-06 04:56:18 PM
PBR is the only beer I drink. It's cheap and tastes great.

This story gives me the hope that at sometime, at a bar, I can use the buy you a beer and then squeeze the Schlitz out of you line.

All Apologies 2008-04-06 04:56:21 PM
It's a trap!

Rudolph the Red must be up to his old tricks. The surest way to catch the guy is to follow the trail of Schlitz to his location.

Anyone remember Falstaff? When I was a kid, every tavern in south St. Louis had a Schlitz or Falstaff sign. I knew about those beers long before I heard of anything produced by Anheuser-Busch.

At the pharmacy I buy beer from in Milwaukee, PBR is more expensive than Miller. Imagine that! I figure the resurrected Schlitz will cost even more.

fark you, you beer-price-raising hipsters!

Ja Hu Sirius 2008-04-06 05:04:19 PM
I wonder if they'll include the line on the label, "The beer that made Milwaukee famous" with the company HQ and primary distributor based in Illinois.

The Schlitz I remember from my teenage years tasted better than Bud and LOTS better than PBR.

When I met my wife 20 yrs. ago her dad used to drink Schmidts. The ones in the little round bottle like a Red Stripe.

They stopped making it. Now he drinks Bud Light.

One of the all-time business blunders, schlitz is a case-study in stupid. They were the #3 selling beer in America in the 60's & 70's, just behind Budweiser and Miller and well ahead of the rest of the pack. The geniuses that ran the company figured out that if they altered the formula, including going to a cheaper yeast, they could pocket an extra 10c or so per 6-pack. The new beer came out and tasted so horrible that they lost their market overnight. Within 3-4 years, it wasn't even in the top 10.

In an effort to save a few dimes, they ended up throwing all their dollars away. Schlitz went from popular to being the punchline of a really bad joke. Made the "New" Coke debacle look like a stroke of marketing genius. I wonder if the company execs ever heard a story about a goose who laid golden eggs.

I prefer regular Genny, but I can't find it ANYWHERE, even when I visit the Finger Lakes, in Genessee's own back yard.

I used to do the same thing, but with a beer called Reibenbach.

i4.photobucket.com

The lager was pretty bad (shown above), but they had another that was epic in its near undrinkability - Charles Reibenbach Ice Ale (like above, but a blue can). Last time I bought it (2005), it was $2.99 for a 12-pack.

From what I understand, it's brewed exclusively for Albertsons, which is the only place I've ever seen it. Even my roommates, who would have drank bong water if it would have had a chance of getting them high, wouldn't go near this shiat.

My mom's favorite beer. Look forward to her stumbling around and it not be because of age. Wonder if it will counter balance?
