You'd think with all the people chanting for a "Free Tibet", some would actually research what living conditions were like before the Chinese rolled in and set up shop.

Yeah, and I'm sure that Poland got some better roads after Sept. 1, 1939 too.

That doesn't matter. A sovereign nation was invaded and conquered by another. What sort of government Tibet has is for the Tibetans to sort out. It's not for the Chinese to impose on them.

Because most people would be totally fine with a foreign power with a different religious persuasion took over their country, so long as it gave them in door plumbing and AC.

Yeah, because continued oppression is justified because Tibet sucked in the 1940s.

The Llamist government sucked. No doubt about it. I wouldn't even necessarily argue that, minus the whole "foreign occupying army" thing, China was an immediate improvement. Doesn't change the fact that China continues to occupy a nation they have no claim to.

Im not really sure what the "living conditions" were. They were probably pretty poor. But the Chinese have obliterated the cultural identity of Tibet which is absolutley disgraceful. I know that similar thing have happend before and some may claim "well thats just progress". But it still dosent make it right. The chinese government and a majority of it upper class couldnt care less about Tibet and its culture. They have raped and pillaged their temples and holy lands and discriminate against the native peoples in their own land. I dont claim to understand the whole situation between Tibet and China. But I do know that what I have heard dosent sound very good. I can understand why some people would feel strogly enough about this to protest the olympic games. Besides the chinese are communists. If George Bush had any balls he would boycott the games and denounce them for being communists. But that wont happen because they pay the bills. Oh well, fark it. Let the games begin!

Since when "free" means "return it to the state it was in 50 years ago"?

Maybe it the People's Front of Tibet, the Tibetan People's Front, the Tibetan Popular Front and the Campaign to Free Lhasa would stop being splitters and get together, they could do something about the bloody Chinese.

All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Boycott the Olympics today, go back to buying gobs and mounds of their shiat the next. Which one is really saying more about whether we think Tibet should be free or not?

While we're freeing lands "oppressed" by "foreign" powers let's Free Hawaii as well. Tibet was part of China forever and has no real claim to sovereignty.

Hawaii doesn't want to leave the US and Tibet wants to leave China. I don't know what you are getting at with that. If a people declare that they want to be sovereign, they deserve a little more than police brutality and Chinese supplied doctored news reels going against them.

The doctored news reels go both ways. The Tibetans have been attacking the Chinese settlers, which hasn't been getting much coverage on the news.

Why aren't you boycotting the Catholic church for sending missionaries into the jungle in South America to convert the tribes? Why aren't people bemoaning the death of Korean traditional culture? Why isn't there massive popular support for the Chechnyans and other areas where Islam is being violently suppressed?

Uh, I guess I AM boycotting the Catholic church, for that and other reasons. As much as you can boycott a church. As for Korean culture, is it being extinguished by a foreign power? And I do generally feel for the Chechnyans, and people who are religiously oppressed.

I'm getting a kick out of this because I was at the torch relay...

I really was, outside of Queensway station. I was walking 4 farking dogs and it was snowing. Bayswater Road was packed with people where I was. Lots of chanting and yelling. Tons of Tibetan flags everywhere. About 2/3 of the people were there to see the torch, about 1/3 to protest. A float of scantily clad cheerleaders went by. They must have been freezing.

I could tell the torch was coming because of the noise, then a truck full of cameramen rolled past and right behind it was the torch, which was handed off between someone I couldn't seen and some blond chick, probably an Olympic athlete. Police were everywhere, surrounding the torch carrier. The crowd was booing. There were tussles near the torch, but i couldn't see if any protester got close. The cops manhandled a Chinese looking or Tibetan guy out of the way from the torch and arrested him. The crowd broke up right after.

I wonder what it was like when the torch went through Chinatown?

Falcc 2008-04-06 01:04:46 PM
Ok, I didn't make it in before Life of Brian jokes, but I'm still in before "at least the Chinese aren't carpetbombing the country they're occupying". So that's something.

Yeah but see the USA was greeted as liberators. Just ask a Republican, or someone that posted on fark 2002 - 2005 how great Bush is. You can't even compare the USA occupation of Iraq, because we're the USA, and its our job to invade countries who need it.

Which is why they greeted the Chinese as liberators.

I can't see why anyone is surprised at this. I mean, why travel all the way to China to protest and get thrown in jail when there's an Olympic torch coming to a town near you? I'd expect this scene to be repeated ad nauseum all over the world for the next few months. Between actual Free-Tibeters and generic angry contrarians who'd protest air if they got the chance, the torch relay is going to turn into a worldwide protest tour.

Good luck with that, China.

That is blatantly not true I was lurking on ebaumsworld and they said to take it out... there was not mention of a fire extinguisher and it was greeted with a barrage not your personal armies.

I have no idea the point you are trying to make. People do try this ALL the time...

It has to be a weird feeling actually beating a Tibet Monk, probably like clubbing a baby seal in front of a group of orphans or something similar.

China just needs one major revolution to no longer stay relevant. Not that they are all that close to it. With the lack of news they are aloud to get I don't think 98% of China really know how exploited they are by the other 2%

No I do NOT think it's quite that bad in the US (not saying we are perfect though.)

I saw the report on the BBC - god those coppers shat themselves in the few seconds it took to realise what it was - they saw the cloud of fumes before they saw the guy responsible, so naturally the first instinct is "gas attack".

I know there were several mocking the fact after it had happened 2 hours before the event till the event however I seriously doubt it... the board was slow.
