Nah. Just "duck and cover" in the event of lava flow.

I just came to see if someone would point out that Hawaii is an island, and not get subby's joke.

But I suppose I am too early.

strangeguitar: I've been there a couple times. Why the f**k would you want to leave?

Because they have an understandable policy of, "Thank you for visiting, now go home."

Everyone wants to be the last one to discover a place.

yea, but with gas prices the way they are a bus ride from Hawaii would be pretty expensive.

If you can get a personal invitation to visit either Ni'ihau or Kaho'olawe, then you can see the real Hawai'i. Since neither are very likely for most of us, Molokai will have to do. Loved Maui, but it's totally all about the tourism. There are a number of villages there utterly resentful of haole that I wouldn't recommend visiting even for authenticity's sake.

It's still one of those places you have to see before you die, and still very much worth the effort.

t3knomanser 2008-04-06 01:14:09 AM
So much for personal responsibility.

strangeguitar: I've been there a couple times. Why the f**k would you want to leave?

I visited last year. Heat and humidity come to mind.

Consider that I'm from Central Oregon, where a "hot day" ranks at roughly 80. I arrived in Honolulu in April and nearly died. It's gorgeous (Maui too), I'll be working on a nocturnal schedule the next time I see it. Walking down the streets on any given day felt as though I were basting in an oven.

I for one will never get tired of SPAM. I can take or leave pineapple, though once you've had it fresh, you'll never be able to stand the preserved kind again.

Well subby, it might be cheaper to use buses and trains but it is safer to fly them home. Personally, I'd rather take a bus or train and enjoy the sightseeing but I wouldn't want to sit in a bus or train for that long.

Oahu is completely commercialized, but there's stuff to do.
Big island is pretty, but boring.
Maui is very nice, but there's a lot of development going on.
Kauai is still very tropical, but it rains a lot.
Molokai is boring.
Lanai is owned by Bill Gates or Oprah or somebody, very boring.
Niihau is privately owned, ya gotta know somebody to get in.
Kahoolawe will turn u green.

Before all you barbecue fans chime in I have to ask..
Have you ever seen a Hawaiian person really being barbecued?
I mean a human Hawaiian being really barbecued with deadly force.
Just wondering.

Hawaii is the early Tahiti. Go see it before it goes. See them both; they are on the way out.

I love how all of you are picking apart Hawaii like its some middle-of-the-ocean disneyland now. I'm happy just to get the hell out of the midwest and experience different climates let alone a tropical island with culture you can't find anywhere else on this landmass called north america. Do you people have to bag on everything in this world or what?

To answer your question, if you have the means, you should visit. There are different areas on each island for different tastes. From my experience Oahu has nightlife (and the whole Pearl Harbor thing), Maui is for kicking back and just enjoying the fact that you aren't back home rotting away. Theres plenty of sight-seeing if you're into that. In my case, I just like to kick back and have a caucasian or 6 and not worry about a thing.

From the few Hawaiians that are pushing 50 I've met say that growing up on an island is really goddam boring and irritating. One almost hopes a volcano explodes just to give people something to do or talk about.

/wants to visit
//but only for the volcanoes
///can find lush jungles anywhere else and not be stuck on Gilligans Island.

Sad to see ATA and Aloha call it quits. Flew both countless times to the islands. ATA was awesome. One-way standby was $142 cash at the counter from SFO or LAX.
