Let's fly abroad!

benlonghair [TotalFark] 2008-04-05 07:21:06 PM
'Choose life, choose a job, choose a career, choose a family, choose a farking big television. Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments, choose a starter home, choose your friends. Choose leisure-wear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suite and higher purchase and a range of farking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fark you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing farking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, farked up brats you've spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future, choose life. But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life, I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons! Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?'

'Now I've justified this to myself in all sorts of ways. "It wasn't a big deal, just a minor betrayal" or "We'd outgrown each other" -- you know, that sort of thing. But let's face is, I ripped them off, my so-called mates. But Begbie, I couldn't give a shiat about him, and Sickboy, well he'd've done the same to me if he'd only thought of it first. And Spud, well...okay, I felt sorry for Spud, he never hurt anybody. So why did I do it? I could offer a million answers, all false. The truth is that I'm a bad person, but that's gonna change. i'm going to change. This is the last of that sort of thing. I'm cleaning up and moving on, going straight and choosing life. I'm looking forward to it already. I'm gonna be just like you -- the job, the family, the farking big television. The washing machine, the car, the compact disc and electrical tin opener. Good health, low cholesterol, dental insurance, mortgage, starter home, leisure-wear, luggage, three-piece suite, DIY, game shows, junk food, children, walks in the park, nine-to-five, good at golf, washing the car, choice of sweaters, family Christmas, index pension, tax exemption, clearing the gutters, getting by, looking ahead the day you die.'

On a similar note on slang (Inner City American, not Scottish, but whatever), but did it occur to anyone else that Straight Up Ballin' means the same as Down Right Pimpin'?

70,000 patients a year are leaving Britain for treatment in European hospitals, and this is set to rise to 200,000 by the end of the decade.

Did the Brits just exclude themselves from the rest of Europe? WTF?

Have you ever seen a person really shot by a Scottish person?
I mean a human being shot by a Scot with deadly force.
Just wondering

the most interesting part of the article:

In fact, why not get Europe to run our public services? The NHS has already been sending patients on hospital waiting lists abroad for operations: about 1000 a year. But far more go privately: 70,000 patients a year are leaving Britain for treatment in European hospitals, and this is set to rise to 200,000 by the end of the decade.

Soooooo..... if national health care is so great, why such a big increase in patients seeking medical attention in foreign countries not covered under the NHS?

/Always amuses me that people think nat. health care is such a great thing
//not working for GB, Japan, or Ireland very well
///and they think our bureaucracy wouldn't screw it up even worse?

It works pretty well for Italy and Canada. But you keep on believing that all national healthcare systems are the same.

(You realize the European countries the Brits are sending people to are... countries with nationalized healthcare?)

I know some Canadians that would disagree with you Cid, as well as they're American doctors. Won't comment about the Italian system since I don't know any Italians still living there.

That being said, I think whether "nationalized healthcare" is a good idea all depends on your point of view.

I have health insurance though my girlfriend's job, and don't really like the idea of my standard of care going down. (Thank you gay people! Got to love the domestic partner benefits.) So I think it would be a big mistake.

My sister lived in the UK for a year with her Scottish husband and thought the free health care was just great... course she is lazy and never held a job long enough to get health insurance in this country, so had to pay out of pocket for health care. They moved here and she get insurance though his employer, for which he says he pays ALOT less for MUCH better coverage and service. His words... not mine.

And to bring this full circle, not only is my bother in law Scottish, he is also a Brewer... so yes, I am getting a kick out of these replies!

BTW: Yes I realize that most people without health insurance are not lazy like my sister. I just like to publicly point out my sister is lazy.

Yes they did. The British traditionally do not consider themselves as Europeans. From their point of view Europe the continent beyond the channel. The only people who consider Briatain as part of Europe are people from outside Europe & Britain and some especially idealistic, utopistic and unrealistic European visionaries.

As you can imagine that selfimage has not been very helpful in regards to European integration.

The AMA is pushing for nationalized health care. It allows doctors to make treatment choices instead of consulting with a paper-pusher before ordering tests.

I think a lot of continental Europe considers Britain as a part of Europe (incuding non-idealistic utopistic Europian visionaries). It's just the Britains don't. This is also clear in their non-acceptance of the Euro.

As an American, I can only assume that a "piss-up" is an event where a large group of people all attempt to piss upwards at the same time.

Which would be easier to do in a brewery, as drinking lots of beer would aid in that endeavor.

You may well just be "having a laugh" here, but for those still stuck on the slang...

---

Piss up - as in "a bender", "a drinking binge", "a drunk-fest". If you were in the UK, you might refer to being drunk as being pissed.
Quote in headline is the same as saying someone saying that they couldn't get farked in a brothel.

---

And yeah, since "she was pissed" might be taken to mean "drunk" - "lost her rag" more clearly indicates someone so angry that you can say that they "lost control" or "lost their mind."
Actually, you can still be "pissed off" and given context "pissed" can still mean angry - it just more often means "drunk".

---

And yeah, Brits don't really consider themselves part of Europe (noting previous comment about not embracing the Euro). They refer to trips heading east off the island as "going to the continent".

We have a crappy ish health system (yes it is free) and have to wait forever for treatment.... those who can afford to go abroad and be treated a private hospital do so and get it much quicker.

And no... were not Europeans... were British damn it!

hiddenshallows 2008-04-06 05:32:38 PM
piss up is a standard british term; in fact we have a few ending in -up. I once had an amusing time with a u.s. dude about an ebay thingie; he loved the expression tits-up, and was totally shocked to find out that tits-up wasnt a good thing!

//now delights in saying "it`s all gone tits up" when his server crashes, tho is frowned at.
