Not only that, but let's let said 50-year-old pervert drive the girl's brothers off into the desert so there's less competition for him and the rest of his pals.

Y'know, it's really suspicious that every damn "-ist" group in the world seems to have to repeatedly tell the world that the latest bunch of their myrmidons to go off the ranch and start killing/raping/bombing are "NOT us -- they're a splinter group/rogue element/nutjob cult".

It's almost, well, like the problem is the "-ist" thing in the first place. Whether it's Bapt-, Islam-, Athe-, Creation- or Rac-, once you become an "ist" all your brains seem to immediately liquefy onto the floor.

FTFA: A search warrant authorized troopers to enter the retreat, run by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They are looking for evidence of a marriage between the girl and a 50-year-old man. Court documents the girl had a baby eight months ago, when she was 15.

Yes, because we are constitutionally guaranteed the right to impregnate 14-15 year old girls and force them into marriages with men old enough to be their grandfathers.

Bucky Katt: are you suggesting that statutory rape is an unconstitutional law?

It's not a constitutional thing, you're right. But our founding fathers certainly didn't intend for an age of consent of 18 with decades of imprisonment for anyone who violated it, and a government that could separate hundreds of kids from their parents because of one isolated accusation.

That's why people are tempted to say this tramples all over the constitution. It's really just an (arguably unexpected) application of post-1960s law changes to religious groups.

/and yeah these people reflect on mainstream Mormons about as much as Jim Jones reflects on mainstream Christians... as in, not at all

So explain to me how it is that in looking for a single girl they then took away more than 150 women and children? Hmmm. They have every right to find that girl. And that is it.

That is pretty much true, although the ages weren't really that young on average, if I remember correctly (have studied the history of marriage and the family).

The good news is we have moved on from that and make a better attempt to treat women as persons under the law and not cattle, which was also the tradition of 18th century America and Canada.

For the people claiming about the nanny state and ages of consent, I am betting a lot of the girls in this group were not consenting, so that probably solves that problem. Are you saying that a 14 or 15 year old girl doesn't have the right to refuse sex? Because a 14 or 15 year old girly may not have the power to refuse, doesn't it seem pertinent for the law to have a say in this?
