I worked at a pawnshop for 7 years. In that time you would not believe the things I've seen. Yes, I had folks pawn their camcorder with decent vids inside them (see youporn) I've also had gold teeth pawned, complete with plier marks and I was robbed at gunpoint twice and actually killed the last one who tried. Pawn brokering is a tough and very boring job most of the time. It doesn't pay well and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. The only benefit is getting any thing for 25% over what we loaned for it. When I worked there I always carried 2 guns, a S&W 1006 and a Kel-Tec 9mm. I ended up shooting somebody with the 1006. I will never forget it. I wish it was different. I blame myself every single day. I should have done it differently.

That depends; if it's standard VHS or Betamax it's pretty much pwnd just by default.

not bad, concidering they only loan for 10% of what something really costs. I once needed some cash for the week & took in few things. One was my Dyson vaccuum... and I left with them, laughing at the dude behind the counter.

I had paid $450 for the Dyson, he wanted to give me $40. Now, I know he typed in their computer to get pricing "vaccuum"... but a Dyson ain't your everyday vaccuum.

The guideline always was (if in new condition) 25% of retail price. that way we could sell it for twice what we loaned on it. Pawnshops don't want to keep the items you put on collateral, we wanted to earn the interest on the loan. Only use Pawnshops as a last resort. 25% interest compounded per month is ruinous to almost any consumer. Hell, I've had super bowl rings in the shop where I worked at and only loaned a max of $2000 on them.

My camera was stolen our of a government work truck in the middle of the night. And around 9:00am I found it in a pawnshop. They'd changed the strap and the lens, but the rest was my trusty Pentax K-1000 all right, with all the defects mine had such as the frame counter being 4 places off. I asked to see it, and the guy behind the counter was real nervous. Even told another guy in the store that someone was looking at the camera.

Sigh. It was a nice one, I'd used it for thousands of good pics over the years.

Couldn't prove it was mine, wasn't smart enough in those days to register things with the cops, so I just fiddled with it a while, wished it good luck in it's new life, handed it back, and walked.

I bet it happens all the time. Pawnshop dudes see the rightful owners of stuff walk in, find their stuff, have no way of proving it's theirs, and leave again.

/Never patronize pawnshops. It's all stolen stuff, and the owners aren't stupid. Don't promote that business model.

That really isn't true. I knew that some of the stuff I took in was stolen. I was required by law to report the model numbers and serial numbers of every item I took in. If an item was stolen, then the shop took the loss. It was in our best interest to not take in stolen items. There are of course exceptions. Pawnshops are only there to prevent the desperate from going to loan-sharks. I could almost always tell from the story that a client gave us if an item was stolen or not. Most of our customers where honest, hard working folks that just got a little behind in their bills. Some were low life tweakers looking for a fast buck. After awhile, any one could tell the difference. Loaning money to crack heads became an unacceptable risk and we never pursued those types of loans.

ultraholland: You're right. Should have used the Kel-Tec.

You joke, I am serious. I never trusted the hard double action pull of the Kel-Tec. The guy had pulled a gun on me and I gave in completely to his demands. When he had turned his back, and was walking out the door I opened fire. The only reason I carried a Kel-Tec was that it was completely concealable. I could keep it in the front pocket of my jeans in case I was disarmed by someone who had cased out our establishment. I never wanted to kill anybody, it somehow was automatic. I could have let him go and he would have lived. Instead, I shot a 19 y/o in the back and killed him. Make as much jest about this as you wish. It will haunt me till the end of my days.

Hey man, If I were you I would broadcast your story as much as possible. People have to get it into their heads that other people might be armed. Believe me, If you were being held up, you had every right to do what you did. the more people that hear about it, the more of a chance that somebody will think twice about holding up a pawnshop. You may inadvertently save someone else's life.

Sometimes you have to look at a situation like that and and ask yourself what good can come from it other than just looking at the bad shiat.

Maybe I should have. I don't remember making a conscious decision about the incident. It was automatic. I think about this guys family and his child every day. Maybe I should be in prison. I tried to send money to his family but they won't accept it. I even tried to set up a trust fund for his child to go to Armstrong state and the family refuses. I just want absolution for what I have done.

Maddogjew, I'm sorry to hear about that. Your regret is really normal and I wish I could say something to make you feel better. I know two police officers who killed in the line of duty, were cleared, and still quit the force. These NRA types on Fark and elsewhere who talk big about shooting people have no idea. Unless someone is a psychopath, they inevitably feel guilty for the rest of their lives for killing someone, be it in self-defense, in combat, or in police work. Col. David Grossman wrote a book about that, called "On Killing." He mentions that people who kill really don't talk about it much, and if they do, they only talk to other people who have done the same thing.

knownzero: Yeah, I'm kind of curious about that as well. You must have had one hell of a lawyer.

No, I used Bobby Phillips (pops) (he was cheap). The grand jury never indicted me. GA, seems to have an understanding about things like that. It cost $600 (All Cash Coin and Pawn paid for it) and nothing ever became of it. I don't mind answering any questions about this. It makes me feel better if somehow, y'all understand.
