But they say more tests, including tests on humans, are needed.

SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of 'ot gravel, work twenty hour day at mill for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would thrash us to sleep with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
Well, of course, we had it tough. We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick road clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife.

Tell you what... The crushed recycled concrete that they use for "Path Gravel" at most outdoor venues around here [like our Renaissance Faire] is the amazingly abrasive and invasive.

On a dry day the jewelry cases in our both are covered almost to the point of opaque in about an hour. And you can't just wipe it off, because it etches the glass if you do that.

Its a bit of an inside joke that we use sail canvas for kleenex because when you have a nose full of that stuff... plain old tissue disintegrates on contact!

/Have probably breathed in a city block worth of sidewalk over the last 16 years.

FTA: Steve Way, a federal Environmental Protection Agency coordinator, said studies have shown that erionite causes cancer in lab rats, though the mineral is not regulated by his agency.

Y'know Steve, now might be a good time to leave. You just closed down the only place for kids to play and pissed off the rest of the town. Good luck to ya.

Crackpipe 2008-04-05 06:38:55 PM
crushed concrete is probably worse than this erionite gravel. It has silica, which has similar effects on the lungs as asbestos. And a whole shiatload of other mineral fibers. I do remodeling carpentry and I'm exposed all the time to all kinds of fine particulates. I'm not waiting for the EPA to identify them all and label them safe or unsafe, I just wear a hepa resperator 24 hours a day.

MrHacks: Erionite = Hydrated Potassium Sodium Calcium Magnesium Aluminum Silicate

So the following elements cause cancer:
Hydrogen, Potassium, Sodium, Calcuim, Magnesium, Aluminum, Silicon, and Oxygen.

No no no. Those cause cancer when they combined to form very small fibers. They probably damage cells and tissues, giving other materials places to lodge, and generally mes up yer insides.

It's a lot like how the headline is wrong. Gravel does not cause cancer, but erionite does.

Myth Busted: When I was 11, I was hit by a car. They told me (selective amnesia, I guess) that after I was hit, I flew to the other side of the road, and landed ass first in the gravel along the shoulder.

Yeah, gravel got stuck in my cheeks. I remember waking up to nurses taking it outta me bum during that night sometime.

Point is, some of that gravel is still in muh ass cheeks, and I most certainly don't have Glutius Cancerous.

I'm pretty sick of cancer scares.

Crosshair [TotalFark] 2008-04-05 07:06:30 PM
*Sigh* Has ANYONE done any research to see how much of a problem this really is?

The sun causes Cancer, but If I don't lay out in the Sun unprotected for hours at a time, it isn't a problem. Same in this situation. How much exposure to this stuff is dangerous?

They will probably find that this stuff increases the chance of cancer by .000001% over the lifetime of an individual and it isn't a big deal.

Gyrfalcon [TotalFark] 2008-04-05 07:39:20 PM
100% of items used in life activities lead to death.

It's true. I have studies.

:O Well, you might be willing to just let your child have a 0.000001% increase in his risk of cancer, but I won't. Won't someone please think of the children? Isn't one child who has cancer unnecessarily one too many?!?

I agree Gravel does rock! but on a more serious note...

Erionite is listed as a Group 1 carcinogen by the IARC and as a known human carcinogen by the NIH. Some studies suggest erionite to be more toxic than asbestos.

No, it has to do with how the elements are combined together. For instance, your body needs carbon, nitrogen, and potassium (as well as a bunch of other elements.) Hmm... why don't I eat some of this powder? it's a compound that has one atom of potassium, one atom of carbon, one atom of nitrogen, it MUST be good for me!

i'll tell you why I don't! Because potassium cyanide will farking kill me!

/it's not just the elements, it's how they're arranged

PsychoPhil 2008-04-05 08:41:43 PM
Just wait till the Asbestos litigation client supply dies off. They're warming up to go after fiberglass.

Here's an idea - don't breathe fiberous crap all day for 1/2 your life. They all cause cancer...

I find it odd that the panic always begins with "shown to cause cancer in laboratory rats" I used to have a lot of pet rats, they get cancer pretty easily. You just look at them wrong and they get a tumor.
