Why couldn't Lars have died? He is a TERRIBLE drummer. Oh well there's MANY metal bands out there better than Metallica ever was.

That's nifty!!!! How'd you meet him, exactly?

You know what's strange? In a few short years, he'll be dead longer than he was alive. And I can remember hearing about him being killed like it was yesterday.

Sorry, Metallica has sucked hard core ever since Load. I'm glad that album did for their career what you, Lars, did for Napster. fark you and burn in hell.

I was lucky enough to sneak backstage at the Spectrum. I met Cliff and James. James was kinda aloof, but Cliff talked with me and my friend for 15 minutes.
Also got to talk to Jake E. Lee. Another nice dude.

Aaaah.

I know someone who got backstage at Monsters of Rock, '88, at RFK in D.C. He knocked on Metallica's dressing room door, and Lars came out. Said Lars was nice, but the rest of the band was supposedly in a bad mood for some reason. Eh, there's more to it, but that's enough.

Lar$ couldn't keep time with a wristwatch. This clip, as great as it is, reveals that.

He improved with AJFA, but it's been downhill since.

Just "improved"? Come on, give credit where credit is due. I can't stand Lars, but his performance on AJFA is simply amazing. Gotta love those beats.

Do you mean the production/recording, or the actual songwriting? I've always held AJFA to be the perfection of metal.

Four Horsemen is my favorite Metallica song. Great lyrics, power and slow mosh all in one. Too bad they couldn't write a song like that again if their lives depended on it.

You're absolutely right- but you're talking (I think) about the production, which IS "thin and sterile". This is attributed to Lar$ and James thinking that it would be "funny" to take out (or at least lower) all of the bass tracks on the masters. This resulted in one of the worst-sounding albums ever made...

...however, from a songwriting/playing perspective, you're hearing a band at the top of it's creative game. AJFA is widely heralded as Metallica's progressive masterpiece- perhaps not as crushingly heavy as Master of Puppets or as raw and primal as Kill 'Em all, but a true picture of a band at their creative zenith.

Well...Iron Maiden is coming to Merriweather on June 18th. I may or may not go. I saw them at a really small venue w/Anthrax opening in '91, already, so I'm not sure I need to see them again.

Negative. Somewhere around the time of Load/Re-Load, Metallica became a swirling vortex of suck live. I won't even go into a long-winded explanation as to why i think this is, just do this:

Watch the '89 Seattle show from "Live S**t: Binge and Purge", then watch "Cunning Stunts" or any other live DVD they've put out since.

With the exception of Cliff's famous bass solo I honestly have never heard bass in any Metallica song.
Can't think of one single bassline of theirs.

I once ran into Jason Newsted at the pro shop at Universal Rehearsal studios in Dallas. I was there to pick up my Fender Jazz bass from the in house luthier and Newsted was there producing the new REO Speeddealer record in one of the big rooms.

He says to me "man that is a sweet bass you got there" and asked if he could check it out. Naturally I let him play on it and we talked bass guitars for awhile.

I think the only reason he even gave me the time of day was because I never acknowledged that I knew who he was.
I just spoke politely with him one bassist to another.

Jason is really down to earth. I saw him play with Voivod at the Bronco Bowl (RIP) in Dallas. They blew the breakers and when they were taking a break to get the power back on, he was in the crowd, chatting to folks like any bar band musician. He seemed like a really decent guy with a true love for music. A very unaffected and mellow guy...and a hell of a bass player.

ok...i'll partly disagree with you...i have the binge and purge dvd and it's awesome...there's just something about actually being there, being at the front, being in a crowd that's going nuts...just the whole live experience of being there can't compare to watching a video of it....i'm sure that seeing them live in '89 would be better than seeing them now...all i'm saying is that i enjoyed it having no other live in-person experience with them

RTL has filler, MOP does not.

Also, Load is pretty weak but I still give it credit for at least being better than mainstream rock. St. Anger on the other hand...

I'm sure you've heard Orion. I'm also sure you've heard For Whom the Bell Tolls (the beginning descending riff is bass). His bass on Battery and Master of Puppets is great. LISTEN HARDER.

browntimmy: RTL has filler, MOP does not.

the only song that could be construed as "filler" on MOP is "the thing that should not be." hands down, the weakest tune on an otherwise perfect album, start to finish.

other related items: they could remaster AJFA to bring up the bass and make it sound more rich and depthful (instead of the tin can that it is). if (not when) they do so, it will fulfill the integrity of that album. but more importantly, it will let everyone know they're finally allowing cliff to rest in peace. and giving much forgiveness to newstead.

I prefer the original version called mechanix done on the first megadeth album.. Much faster. Dave Mustain wrote the song anyways I think.

I don't. Dave's version (The Mechanix) is just a decent thrash song while The Four Horsemen is epic. Dave wrote most of the song, but James improved the lyrics and also added the sweet headbanging "Time has taken its toll on you" part.

On another note, they recently reworked one of their stinkers from St. Anger for an acoustic concert and it turned out to be not bad. Here's the Link (new window).

/sorry to be so positive in a Metallica thread.

Yep. Saw them at the Roskilde festival back in '03. Amazing concert, they were so happy to be on stage again you could feel it. Hammett just stood there with a smile from ear to ear from first song to last.

Since I have friends nearby, I'll probably pay a visit soon to the place where Cliff died. Last summer a group of fans put up a memorial there. Black granite, real nice thing it seems.

I think Dan is still there.

I am still at Universal but not the main facility on Greenville ave.
My band uses one of the smaller "satellite" studios in Garland.

Dan is the man.
He does superb work and charges very little.
In fact,he often charges nothing.
He will not charge you if he can fix something in less than 10 minutes or so. I have seen him open up many "stomp boxes" and simply re-connect something and just hand it back to you for free.

Great guy.
Both my USA Fender basses have his loving touch.
