This is why business reporters should really take an accounting class, at least. If you're renting a place, how can you owe property tax or be subject to seizure of the property you don't own? If they had a contract to be responsible for these expenses, the city could evict them for nonpayment, but that's all. Problem is, this article is so poorly written I can't really tell if the city's confused, or the author, or both.

The kerfuffle over the tax bill throws a spotlight on one of the city's most unprofitable leases to the food industry.

Crazy Canadians and their made-up words.

After reading the article, it looks like they "undervalued" the property, then realized they could get a lot more, and "forgot" about the deal where the restaurant didn't pay taxes like everyone else in the building. Sounds like a straightforward cash grab.

And if we got mugged on the street, it would be a crime. Government mugs you, no crime.

Can we just pick one thing to tax, and not every frickin' thing we have?

Man, everything was wrong with this one.

Though the headline piqued my interest, I found the article lacking in character development. The character of "company owner" seemed quite shallow and never got past being one-dimensional. For a moment, Martin Bernier seemed to escape this dimension with his "rent calculation" monologue, but in the end, he too fell flat.

"Oh yeah?"

Before the back taxes fans chime in I have to ask..

Have you ever seen a person really hit with back taxes?

I mean a human being assessed with deadly back taxes.

Just wondering...

Reminds me of an incident which happened in Key West several years ago:

Two guys had a bar, and they didn't pay their liquor taxes for a long time. Guy comes in, hands them a bunch of papers, saying in effect: "Pay me $35,000 or you can't sell any more liquor."

"Oh yeah?" says one of them. "Well, that bastard said we couldn't sell any more liquor---but he damn sure didn't say we couldn't give it away!"

The party lasted all weekend long, there were drunks lined up eight deep at the bar, so thick you couldn't even fall down if you passed out, drunks were passed out all over town in a three-block radius in all directions, they gave away about $10,000 worth of booze, and it was the wildest party Key West had seen in. . . at least a week or so.

The bar was called the Old Anchor Inn, on Duval Street, about one block south of Sloppy Joe's.

I am not Canadian, but that looks like a perfectly good word to me, and I am using it every chance I get.

Most of the commentary on the election primaries is a big kerfuffle over nothing.

Kerfuffle or Kerfuffle free? (new window)

(first usage of the word is 34 seconds into the clip for those of you with attention spans of less than, erm, 34 seconds).

charro 2008-04-05 06:49:42 PM
"But we know kerfuffle was originally Scots and it's thought that its first part came from Scots Gaelic car, to twist or bend. The second bit is more of a puzzle: there is a Scots verb fuffle (now known only in local dialect), to throw into disorder, dishevel, or ruffle."

Kind of obscure if you ask me.
