submitter: Rockabilly at it's best

FAIL

Johnny Horton's rockabilly stuff was way better. As was Wanda Jackson's. And Gene Simmons, Macy Skipper and a whole slew of others. I have a couple of songs, from an unknown artist that recorded at Sun Records in the 1950s, that are better than anything Perkins did. Heck, I like Carl Perkins, but I'd rather listen to Curley "Dixie Fried" Griffin any day.

This post is full of win.

I've been on Fark since early 2002 and I've never seen Wanda Jackson mentioned before.
Well done PacMan.

Thanks for the sentiment subby, but Carl's birthday is on the 9th, next Wednesday. Good damn song though, from an artist who never really got the respect he deserved.

Yeah, definitely worth noting, as it was such a rarity.

More like "this is endless repetition of the same three songs over and over again"

Even Jerry Lee Lewis had more variety.

If I'm going to listen to rockabilly it's going to be The Blasters.

Got a buddy of mine from Scotland who is big time in to Rockabilly, he is 40, knows his shiate, went to a party with him recently and the band tore into a song called johhny ace. Dash Rip Rock my friends, from the mid 1980s, a great rockabilly band from New Orleans.

Almost brought a tear to my eye seeing those wankers giving props to one of my high school faves.

Hoakie, beers on me buddy.

Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz (and Scare-oline on bass) have been a lot of fun to watch when they roll through.

The Crypt creepers (new window)

cool rockabilly band from the FAIL state

Heres a rockabilly band, Hot Rod Rebels, i saw them on TV once.

wait...I thought Carl Perkins was the guy from Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom???

Carl Perkins, Johnny Horton - none of those guys could carry Elvis' jockstrap. Stop trying to be cooler than thou.

Those belong more in the gothabilly sub-genre. And if you like that, check out Psycho Charger, Eight Ball Grifter, The Heptanes, Coffinshakers, Cult of the Psychic Fetus and numerous others.

RagingLeonard: I've been on Fark since early 2002 and I've never seen Wanda Jackson mentioned before.

Thanks RagingLeonard. Here are two of my favorites:

Mean Mean Man
Let's Have A Party... strange showing a young Glen Campbell "playing" the lead part on an acoustic 12-string. A band I was in back in New Orleans must've played this one 100 times.

They look intriguing. Kinda like local faves, The Flametrick Subs.

What I dig about Wanda Jackson is that she had the most grating and abrasive voice and it was perfect for her musical style. I can only imagine the fun of hearing that honest rock and roll voice next to the likes of what was popular at the time; Connie Francis and Doris Day.

She must have blown people's minds.

Sgygus [TotalFark] 2008-04-06 06:20:23 AM
I've been to Nagasaki, Hiroshima too! The things I did to them baby, I can do to you! ...

Wanda was the bomb.

EvelFarknievel 2008-04-06 12:27:18 PM
Rockabilly does not equal Elvis, subby.

And Carl Perkins, while impressive, does not eclipse Elvis in any way.

wtf?

I think they consider themselves Psychobilly but I'm picking up what you're putting down. All I know is that Gothic-Burlesque with flaming nipple tassles, nurse outfits, devil outfits, whips and peacock feather fans are not a bad thing to see when rocking out.

Scatter [TotalFark] 2008-04-06 06:29:15 PM
Anyone hear the Carl Perkins stuff he recorded with James Burton? Pretty bad ass stuff.

Almost all the early Sun rockabilly stuff is great, so there's no use arguing who's better. It didn't start to go downhill until Jack Clement came on board.

Cailin Tinn 2008-04-07 02:10:51 AM
Wanda still plays out and around once in a while. Just gotta find yourself a rockabilly weekender...

GibbyTheMole 2008-04-07 08:52:02 AM
Carl Perkins was a class act. He & Roy Orbison were about the two most humble and down-to-earth guys in the biz, and they both had buttloads of talent.

Wow, i didn't know there was such thing as elitist rockabilly snobs.
