It is being distributed by FremantleMedia Enterprises, the U.K.-based commercial arm of "American Idol" producer FremantleMedia.

Sigh, I know their whole thing has been a sham and purely for the cash (from chaos) but really... the Sex Pistols in bed with Fremantle?

Give me a time machine, take me back to Kings Rd 33 years ago and let me tell Maclaren the punchline to his situationist 'joke', he would choke on his Tetleys.

Eh, fark the Pistols; yeah, they had one fun album, though it was basically an amped-up collection of Chuck Berry riffs.

The Clash, the Buzzcocks, the Jam and many others kicked ass all over the Pistols. Hell, even 999 were both more energetic and more interesting than the Pistols.

True.

But there was something in the air in England that summer and the Pistols encapsulated it better than the others (Clash, Damned, etc) because they were so demonized.
I was only 10 in '77 but I can clearly remember two things about the Pistols, hearing the BBC singles chart countdown on TV (TOTP show) and them having to pretend that one of the acts didn't exist, complete with blank screen at appropriate time... and the window display at Branson's Virgin Records store being 'bollocks, bollocks and more bollocks'.

Many people played badly far better than they, they were not true stars and certainly not musicians. But regardless they were integral to the sea change that popular culture was taking just by being so bad that everyone who saw them decided that 'I could do that'. I read once regarding how many future bands (Buzzcocks, Joy Division etc) were in the audience of just the Manchester Free Trade gig alone.

And for all that, I am still fond of them - plus I saw Great Rock and Roll Swindle movie when I was 15 on acid and spent all night thinking I was in the band.

And none of that would've happened without ... the Ramones releasing their first album and touring England.

No doubt, the Pistols served as a conduit, but that's pretty much where their influence began and ended.

Oh, please.

Without the Beatles, there would beno Sex Pistols. At least not anywhere close to what they are.

I thought it was all because MacLaren was in love with the New York Dolls but couldn't get them to stand up/stay awake all at the same time due to some powdery problems they had, so chose some London boys to be his punked up marionettes instead. Not saying the Ramones weren't influential but they are remembered as more than they were at the time, much like the Clash... both great bands but time has been immeasurably kind to them.

I just came back from seeing Shine a Light. Muy excelente.

lazario 2008-04-05 03:15:14 AM
Time always makes good/great bands look like they were more important "at the time" than they really were. Led Zep sells more albums now then they ever did, Pink Floyd, Ramones, Clash, Bob Marley and so on.

I like the Sex Pistols a lot, all 20-30 some odd songs of theirs. The Clash and the Ramones are 2 of my very favorite bands. Truth be told, I think that the Sex Pistols probably influenced more Brits at the time than either of them, but neither of them would have had a decent gig without the Ramones in '77. Eh, maybe they would have though, either way, if it werent for the Ramones we wouldnt have U2, and for that they (Ramones) will never be forgiven.

Music needed a kick in the ass in 1977. The Pistols did the kicking. Maybe their biggest influence was people saying "If THEY can do it so can I." Maybe it was reminding people what four guys and some cheap instruments and attitude can do. Whatever it was, their 15 minutes of fame still sparks passionate discussion from those who were and those who weren't even born yet. I'd much rather see these guys make some cash off of that than the bucketloads the big New Kids on the Block reunion is sure to generate.

They're releasing a concert from 2007? *yawns* My old band opened up for them in Milwaukee on their first reunion tour back in 97 or whenever and it was BOR-ING. Maybe if they put out the footage of the Queen's Jubilee boat ride, or a compilation of their US tour, I might be interested. MIGHT be.
