...looking into whether Hagen was dismissed after a rumor reached Goodling that Hagen is lesbian.

As one Republican source put it, "To some people, that's even worse than being a Democrat."

Disproves.

If the allegations are true, this will be a HUGE issue for the administration. If the USAG is firing people because of a rumor that someone is gay, you're talking serious civil suits and possible criminal convictions for the former higher-ups.

Personally, I hope that it does turn out to be the case. There would be far more cross party support to indict for discrimiantion than because the fired attorneys were Democrats.

That depends, is sexual orientation a protected class in government employment? It sure as hell isn't for the military..

Military- no. Federal government-Yes. Even if they get around the issue by claiming they are political appointees, the perpecptions of discrimination will sink them. Besides, the initial article indictes it was because of rumors alone and no indications of innapropriate behavior.

You have the memory of a goldfish, don't you? This administration manufactured shoddy intelligence to take the nation to war, authorized torture, and illegally spied on citizens without warrants and nothing happened. But yeah, I'm sure THIS is the one that gets them.

What the Bush Administration has done to the Department of Justice should make any patriotic American nauseous.

This is what hyper-partisanship wrought.

Sink them with whom?

The Republicans tried to get a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage passed.

Everyone knows Republicans endorse discrimination against gays. If you supported them before this, you'll continue to support them after this.

this. The government doesn't protect people who violate their laws- so whoever fired them is up for PERSONAL civil suits, in addition to the government getting sued.

As awful as this whole situation is, I do not think that homosexuality is a protected class under Title VII. I think that if the government did fire the attorney due to sexual orientation, it is deplorable.

But Title VII covers only the following, to my understanding:
race
color
religion
sex
national origin

Title VII does not apply to the federal government.

Heh. I went looking around at the attorney job openings over at usdoj.gov, and their hiring policy as stated on some of their listings is:

Department Policies: The U.S. Department of Justice is an Equal Opportunity/Reasonable Accommodation Employer Except where otherwise provided by law, there will be no discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, color, race, religion, national origin, politics, marital status, disability, age, status as a parent, membership or nonmembership in an employee organization, or personal favoritism. The Department of Justice welcomes and encourages applications from persons with physical and mental disabilities. The Department is firmly committed to satisfying its affirmative obligations under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to ensure that persons with disabilities have every opportunity to be hired and advanced on the basis of merit within the Department of Justice

which certainly explains some things.

Sorry I can't hear you over the sound of 50 other things this bad or worse being reported on then ignored. This president does exactly as he pleases. I'll be surprised if he steps down at the end of his presidency.

Dude seriously WTF: Personally, I hope that it does turn out to be the case. There would be far more cross party support to indict for discrimiantion than because the fired attorneys were Democrats.

Say what now? The national Republican party is well-known for being rabidly anti-gay, and advertize the fact that they're pushing the bigot agenda to the bigot demographic (which is fairly sizable) in every election cycle. The fact that Republican operatives fired people for being gay reveals nothing new -- many Republicans are bigots OMG! next thing you'll tell me is Democrats want to raise taxes! Inconceivable!

Even non-bigoted Republicans generally aquisece in pushing the bigot agenda -- when 70% of your party's base thinks being gay should be illegal, even if you disagree, it's easier to remain quiet, lest you go down in flames in a primary challenge. Should this story pan out, there will be no particular political consequences.

No surprise. For this administration ideology, religion, loyalty and proper sexual orientation are all WAY more important then whether or not a person can do their job.

And "their job" is to work on behalf of YOU, American citizen.

And if McCain is elected, most of these people, for whom actual ability is of 4th, 5th, or 6th importance, will keep their job.

Yes, another pathetic swipe at Bush, another miss. There really wasn't any real "opposition" to this administration at all, was there? Despite the threats, the gnashing of teeth howling for Bush's head on a platter? Where is it?

Could it be that no charge, no indiscretion, no "act" has ever been pinned on George Bush? No "smoking gun." Pathetic.

McCain's going to win this election and things will return to normal, and you so-called "progressives" have lost again. It's such a satisfying prediction, I really can't tell you.

Yes, it's always amusing to see how the truth "unhinges" people like yourself.

Still, whether you want it or not, in the next few years, there will be a President McCain, airstrikes against targets in the Middle East, a tightening of domestic security policies and finally a needed backing away from the global warming nonsense. I'm not the one who needs to stop listening to the "voices in my head."

Will he be President McCain of skookumland? It strikes those of us still in the real world that this is shaping up to a veeery democratic-favorable election, what with the recession that will be in full flower by the third quarter and the fact that 83% of Americans now believe that the country is going in the wrong direction. Do you really think that McCain won't be painted as McBush and that that won't stick? If so you are more unhinged than I gave you credit for. You seem to think that the magical October surprise will be bin Laden's head on a pike delivered by Bush right before the election, but that totem ain't gonna cut it this year. The citizens will rightly be outraged that Bush is yet again playing politics with foreign policy and McCain would suffer from the blowback.

Better get ready for President Obama. Of course, that could be the trigger that truly pushes you over the edge, but then again, that was inevitable so not that much is lost.
