Old and buster: He's to popular to be president
New Hotness: He's too sexy to be president

I am sure that this sort of psychological conjecture:

Obama's glamour also accounts for some of his campaign's other stumbles. Plenty of candidates attract supporters who disagree with them on some issues. Obama is unusual, however. He attracts supporters who not only disagree with his stated positions but assume he does too. They project their own views onto him and figure he is just saying what other, less discerning voters want to hear. So when Obama's chief economic adviser supposedly told a Canadian official that, contrary to campaign rhetoric, the candidate didn't want to revise NAFTA, reporters found the story credible. After all, nobody that thoughtful and sophisticated could really oppose free trade.

Is backed up with solid research. Since I'm only partway through the article, I guess I'll have to wait for the voluminous footnotes that no-doubt await me.

Too sexy for his shirt
So sexy it hurts

blockquoteUnlike Franklin Roosevelt or Ronald Reagan, the two glamorous presidents who shaped 20th-century American politics, Obama has left his political philosophy a mystery.

I really hope it's just a low opinion of Americans, or it's the result of an interview with Dr. Phil.

The same exotic distance that makes the candidate compelling to supporters fosters the persistent rumors that he's a secret Muslim and, anonymous sources hint darkly, an enemy of the United States.

It gets more stupider.

Has become? You mean has been, for decades.

\Thanks, TV.

I love that people try to act like people getting all moist for Obama is a sign of a stupid new electorate. Shiat, if Nixon had bothered to shave before his TV debate with Kennedy in 1960, that election could have turned out differently. A lot of the complaints about Obama now could have been used about Kennedy in 1960.

Presidents have never been elected based on sober, thoughtful analysis of their platforms. It's always been glamour, in one way or another. Kennedy was the first who pulled this off in the TV age. I doubt that many people who voted for Kennedy then had much more of a handle on his platform or the differences between him and Nixon than many Obama supporters do.

If the judges have any integrity, they'd be saving the prize for
Beautiful Minds: On television shows like CSI and Numb3rs, scientists are still weird-but a geeky glamour has replaced the old stereotypes

Ummm... it's been that way since Kennedy vs. Nixon. Someone like Polk (fatty!) would never be elected President in the TV age.

As for the Atlantic, in general I'd highly recommend reading it. This writer has sure written some vapid crap though.

But in America's Top Model isn't there always a hint of Caligula-like sexual shenanigans by hot women? Where is my political version of that?

I mean this year.

I mean in the Presidential race, not New York governors.

A subjective evaluation but not a criticism. I don't need to lust over a candidate. I don't need to be charmed by a candidate. I need to be convinced.

Perhaps a large chunk of the American populous, despite having endured years of political cynicism, is still capable of recognizing, and backing, a true leader.

I absolutely love shiat like this. Obama is quite possibly one the smartest SOBs to ever run for president, yet the oppositon keeps talking about how farking beautiful he is.

It's called underestimating your opponent, and it's a sure sign you're going to farking lose.

The mullet would ensure the southern vote, which at the time was a lot more of the country.

I KNOW there will be that but I am sure we are going to have to put up with the "Whats wrong with America" type of analysis. Over and over again.

We do that now. We've been doing that for a long time.

It honestly doesn't matter who we vote for because we're going to hear morons whine about how things would've been different if only we had voted for the other person.

randomjsa 2008-04-04 02:01:16 PM
He's also brought membership in a racist church, close association with the founder of said church, a wife who until her husband could potentially be president has never once been proud of her country, a book full of racially charged drama... To politics.

Let me amend that. Obviously it does matter whether or not you vote, but regardless of how the race turns out, we're still going to hear said whining.

Yeah, because perhaps things would have been a LOT better.

Can anyone honestly say we wouldn't have been better of with Gore at this point?
