Nobody's going to shoot McCain, he's not worth it. Obama better be protected up the ass though.

I could see how having to have the Secret Service would be majorly annoying, though.

muck4doo [TotalFark] 2008-04-04 10:28:26 AM
I would think Hillary would need the most protection.

Actually he doesn't want his trying to f around on his wife to be on the record.

Crude 2008-04-04 10:33:41 AM
I understand his thinking on why he would refuse the protection, but that doesn't mean that it's a smart thing to do. If he's elected, he's gonna have to get used to the invasion of his privacy.

Start listening to this cd, John:

Oh, it has nothing to do with the Secret Service or anything. I just want to be able to vote for someone with similar musical tastes.

Democrats think guns should be illegal, therefore they won't assassinate McCain.
It's stupid, but I think that's what the submitter is going for.

Senescent Dawn 2008-04-04 10:35:35 AM
Luckily for McCain, backwoods redneck militia types absolutely LOVE him. I'm sure he has nothing to worry about.

muck4doo: I would think Hillary would need the most protection.

She has protection when she drops out, too. She's still a former first lady.

I love everytime I hear about how Obama treats his detail. Superbowl party with the agents and his family. Campaign vs. detail basketball games. That is one of the main reasons I really think he's the real deal. He acts that way when nobody watches.

Remember that dude who used to be on Wide World of Sports who would catch bullets in his teeth? I'd totally vote for McCain if he'd do that and live. And if he died...[shrug].

Obama has actually had secret service protection for almost a year.

I read somewhere there was a threat against his kids.

Ed Willy 2008-04-04 10:38:45 AM
He might still need Secret Service. Not for someone jumping out from behind a corner and shooting, but someone jumping out from behind a corner and saying BOOOO!

His old ticker couldn't take that.

TMBGfreak 2008-04-04 10:40:47 AM
Also, it depends on what your definition of "protection" is. McCain still has USSS advances when he travels.

FTFA: McCain does have private bodyguards who accompany him to events.
read: Blackwater or their ilk

anyway....get the postings of Meghan

choice and consequence 2008-04-04 10:42:43 AM
FYI, TFA: McCain said last fall that he would avoid Secret Service protection as long as possible because it would interfere with his ability to interact with voters... McCain does have private bodyguards who accompany him to events. On charter planes, reporters and staffers are screened by private security each time they board.

He can afford to have complete control over the intensity and actions of his security (Secret Service ignores the wishes of their charges on occasion, even the President gets bullied sometimes from what I've read), so he does. 'Nuff said. Probably has a team of ex-SS and characters from The Unit.

A little better than Mr. Kerry, eh? Good to know. These folks have a tough job.

HeadLever: A little better than Mr. Kerry, eh? Good to know. These folks have a tough job.

I was raised by a USSS agent, so these sorts of things hit very close to home. Really the Secret Service and Diplomatic Security Service are the last two agencies I still really respect in the executive.

HumbleGenius 2008-04-04 10:54:22 AM
McCain has never really expected a shot at the presidency.

SharkUW 2008-04-04 10:55:37 AM
He has a whole security entourage that he pays for himself (aka campaign contributions). He also has just as much influence in assistance from local, state, and federal agencies to protect him. I suppose this is Fark...

Am I the only one who finds it shockingly inappropriate that this information is public?

That part of it couldn't have been discussed in a closed committee hearing? It's the farking Secret Service.

Magorn 2008-04-04 11:03:18 AM
Which, you have to admit, is very courageous of him. After all, statistics show that 100% of the presidential assassination victims to date have been white males.

I love stats!

actually I think he knows the score, and with the choice of who to shoot he knows hes is 3rd in line so why have it.

/expect to never see him line up directly in line with the dems :)

Call it a textbook example of why I shouldn't try to be clever on Fark.

RandomExcess 2008-04-04 11:13:03 AM
Mrs. McCain should keep a security detail on her husband. He has a history of cheating on his wife. Perhaps that is why he is "refusing" such a detail now. Once a cheater, always a cheater.

I've worked in politics, and it definitely brings out the weirdos.....so I'm surprised McCain made this sort of move.

/It was bad enough when I had to take phone calls from said weirdos.

"I wish I owned half of that dog."
"Why?" somebody asked.
"Because I would kill my half."
The group searched his face with curiosity, with anxiety even, but found no light there, no expression that they could read. They fell away from him as from something uncanny, and went into privacy to discuss him. One said:
"'Pears to be a fool."
"'Pears?" said another. "Is, I reckon you better say."
"Said he wished he owned half of the dog, the idiot," said a third. "What did he reckon would become of the other half if he killed his half? Do you reckon he thought it would live?"
-- Mark Twain, Pudd'nhead Wilson

What do you reckon would become of the white half of the child if they killed the other half?

The secret service would be a waste of time and money anyway. I don't care how good the secret service is, if someone is determined to sneak up behind McCain and yell "BOO!" to off him, they're gonna do it.

KC Critic 2008-04-04 12:03:33 PM
All the Democrats that I know are strongly in favor of gun control for everyone else but they still want to be able to own guns themselves.

Smart.

Secret Service can't really protect against the most dangerous threat to McCain... his age.

/They also can't really protect against those evil pretzels that nearly claimed Bush

Oh bullshiat he knows he's on stage 24/7. Bigger phony than Hill. Remember when he ran from the podium when they lapdogs started asking unauthorised questions? THAT'S the real Barrak Obama.

No, no, no. You do the Rosie O'Donnel pre-emptive prevarication. You denounce guns as evil, proudly announce that you would never even touch one, let alone own one...and you hire armed-to-the-teeth professional hitmen as bodyguards.

Spitzer wannabe 2008-04-04 01:51:16 PM
Mr. Xhin: All the gun wielding assassins work for the GOP. So McCain is probably in danger of getting a cream pie, but not much more.

/Although it would be funny to watch Secret Service agents start yelling, "PIE! PIE! PIE!!" into their sleeves.

Then who did Hil-liar-y hire to bump off Vince Foster??

hbalien 2008-04-04 02:03:03 PM
Heh-heh. This headline goes great with the one a couple of spots below.

Knowing the Democratic platform on the 2nd Amendment, McCain has so far declined a Secret Service entourage

Not one to let a little thing like losing the Republican Party nomination slow him down, Ron Paul gets ready for the Pennsylvania primary

Go Paulites Go! You still have a chance!

Spitzer wannabe 2008-04-04 02:16:44 PM
Mr. Xhin: Spitzer wannabe: Then who did Hil-liar-y hire to bump off Vince Foster??

Nobody. That story is a rightwing radio fantasy, made memorable by repetition and the willingness of freepers to hate.

Yea, The same group that made up the stories about Bill having sex with an intern.

uh-oh.

Houston, we have a problem!!!!

poot_rootbeer: Someone needs to explain the headline to me.

I think it's a joke about Democrats not having guns, but it's really a joke by allusion, not one with a specific punchline.

Or possibly it's a jab at the democratic candidates for being pro-gun-control, but using armed bodyguards. Depends on subby's political leanings, i guess.

Spitzer wannabe 2008-04-04 02:56:23 PM
Mr. Xhin: Spitzer wannabe: Yea, The same group that made up the stories about Bill having sex with an intern.

No...The same people who pretended that having sex with an intern was the worst thing a President could possibly do. And that lying about it to protect your family and reputation was impeachable.

They failed...and so do you.

holy crap. The President of the United States LIED UNDER OATH. It really doesn't matter if he was trying to protect his family or not. His first obligation was to protect the Constitution. Lying under oath is doing just the opposite.

To excuse him because he was "protecting his family" means that the people on the game show "Moment of Truth" have bigger balls than he does.
