The opening montage has to have a wacky scene where the Pope bursts into the kitchen just as the Rabbi is taking a roast out of the oven and the roast ends up all over the Papal robe.

Against his will, right.....the same guy who in essence would have been the head of the inquistion had it still been around. Why doesn't he just say Ich habe nicht gewust, and go for the full fail.

And deserting his country at war just shows how loyal he is.

Even better, switch the roles. And make it a pork roast.

Do you have anything to back that up or are you just one of those people who don't like him because he actually believes in the teachings of the Catholic Church?

And deserting his country at war just shows how loyal he is.

You don't believe that he was forced to join against his will, yet use his desertion as an example of his poor character?

I think he might've just meant that before becoming Pope, Ratzinger was the prefect of this:

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) (Congregatio pro Doctrina Fidei), previously known as the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office, is the oldest of the nine congregations of the Roman Curia. Among the most active of these major Curial departments, it oversees Catholic doctrine. The CDF is the modern name for what used to be the Holy Office of the Inquisition.

Not deserting the nazi youth but deserting the normal army is a very good indication of character. And he beleives in the teachings of the church you say? Which parts? The buggering of little boys, the promotion of the non-use of codoms or the "let the poor fark themselves, as long as I have a tax haven and castle with golden turrets so I can live in splendor" approach?

I don't think Israel would have any problem killing 1000 Arabs for every one Israeli killed by a suicide bomber.

Say what you want about the Catholic Church, but they've been saying "Hey, DON'T fark the poor!" for over a hundred years.

Damn draft dodging Pope. ;-)

Seriously, why can't a pope and a Holocaust survivor not get along. It certainly was not Benedict's fault that so many where killed. He was a kid and not joining was not exactly an option. If anything he was fortunate he was not strung up for deserting: many, many thousands were summarily hung for doing just that.

I read an account of someone who was eleven and was almost hung because some S.S. guy thought he was deserting. This was a few day before the surrender, after Hitler was dead, and with the Russians a 100 yards away. He was a message runner and the only thing that saved him was an officer he was going to saw what was going on and stopped it.
