I did learn to drive in Britain, but then again I am British. The test is a hell of a lot harder than driving around the block like you do in the states. Plus that driving on the wrong side of the road nonsense and turning right on a red.

Uh, two things (in my opinion)... consensus is useless and polls are a joke.

Think for yourself America. As individuals, take a stand for what you believe in. Whether you and I agree/disagree on the popular issues, please don't allow modern-media's hyperbole to sway your informed and/or common sense judgment.

And for God's sake vote.

Simply put, again, in my opinion...consensus is "the middle ground" where the majority of people have sacrificed enough to satisfy and/or appease a minority view. Who's to say which group is right? Either way, you're stuck in the middle; which is neither good nor bad. On the whole, I find it senseless to lead from the middle.

America has a responsibility of leadership. I maintain that honorable leadership addresses the concerns of all, but doesn't necessarily pander to what's popular at the moment.

I HATE polls like this.

All this says is 81% of Americans have been made scared by the media, regardless of the direction the economy happens to be moving.

The other 19% either don't care about the media coverage, or enjoy giving contradictory answers to polls.

Tell me 81% of economists think we're heading in the wrong direction, and I'll listen.

Americans are, by and large, ignorant and stupid.

Or it could be the fact that gas prices are driving up the cost of almost everything Americans buy, because it is - not because MSNBC says so.
Or the fact that people with a legitimate reason to sell their house (i.e., people who got a new job out of the state/reasonable driving area) simply can't.
Or the fact that all the real estate speculation in a few very large states inflated the market value and, in turn, drove up the taxes and insurance that homeowners pay.
Or the fact that construction employs more people than you can even fathom (including all the ancillary businesses), and the residential market is still all but stagnant and even the commercial side is starting to slow down.

Do I need to go on? Are you really so naive that you think these "problems" with our economy is a just fabrication by Keith Olberman and Brian Williams to boost their ratings?

I think what almost disturbed me more about this poll was this:

The poll also found that Americans blame government officials for the housing crisis more than banks or home buyers and other borrowers. Forty percent of respondents said regulators were mostly to blame, while 28 percent named lenders and 14 percent named borrowers.

OK, there's little doubt that there was some shady dealings going on in the lending business and doubtless a number of people got duped- but I still put a whole lot of responsibility on the people who thought that they could afford a $250,000 house while making $6/hour working at McDonald's.

Seventy-eight percent of respondents said the country was worse off than five years ago. Still, the approval rating of President George W. Bush did not change since last summer, with 28 percent of respondents saying they approved of the job he was doing.

For all the dumbasses who voted for Bush, especially the second time around, who have now come to see the light, I would like a letter of apology from each and every one of you.

But but, the American Dream! EVERYONE can be rich, it's only a matter of time! Vote for tax cuts for the wealthy. Borrow well beyond your means. Buy things you can never afford. Do it all son because you're an American and anything is possible. Why wait when you can enjoy the fruits of your inevitable wealth now? I mean, it's only a matter of time, right? Besides, all of your neighbours have nicer cars....

Too many people thinking like that.

My order of blame:
1) borrowers for being idiots
2) the gov't for bailing out the lenders rather than letting them pay for their greed and what should have been an obvious mistake
3) the lenders for being so grossly predatory
4) the culture for pushing people to think that it is things which define who they are
