A Nationalized Cement industry? Cement?? Why on G-d's Green Earth would you nationalize a cement industry?

Unless... Maybe he's planning to build the Great Wall of Venezuela to keep all his citizens subjects from fleeing the country.

/golf clap for the subby.

cement is in incredibly high demand these days. nationalize it and you've got yourself a handy bargaining chip, international relations-wise. or at least that's what i think his motive is.

Here's a novel concept: unless Chavez poses a threat to human rights, let's leave their economic ownership to them. It's Venezuela's business, not ours.

Seems to me if he keeps this sort of behavior up it's seriously going to discourage investment in Venezuela by foreign companies.

Why that kind of talk is what godless cruel capitalists would say! You should be ashamed of even considering taking the means of production away from the proletariat.

Well, I'll admit to being godless and a dirty capitalist, but I resent the implication that I am cruel. By Fark standards I am a complete softie.

That aside, that's a hell of a message to foreign investors: Come build a company, devote your time, energy and money to it, so we can take it away from you when it becomes successful and we decide it's suddenly a matter of 'national security'.

Point taken. I was being snarky anyway. :) Although, if one were to nationalize industries to help with a housing crisis, there are probably much better options. Like, say, companies that actually build things.

/or we could just disassemble houses that were foreclosed on in the US and sell them to the Venezuelans?

Well the making sure you have the stuff to build the houses with is incredibly important. Chances are the local builders aren't pimping themselves out overseas. Still if the problem is the concrete being sold to foreign countries, just put limits on how much concrete can be exported. There's no real reason to actually take over the companies themselves.

that is a good step forward. you nationalize the infrastructure sectors, then everything else falls in place.

If you want to make money in an expanding country, the first thing you invest in is the local cement company.

Nobody in their right mind would invest in any country where it could b e taken away. If venezuela goes the way of Zimbabwe, it will serve them right.
