which is why they do it the way they do, in a manner that more accurately represents the will of the voters.

These numbers give Texas' "prima-caucus" delegates to Clinton

why do they go to her? clinton won the open vote but obama won the caucus, right? i mean, your entire article is based a gap roughly the same size as the number of texas delegates.

if i'm wrong, that's cool, but your entire premise hinges on the one state with a two-step situation where there was a split this year.

Only problem with this sort of "what if?" thinking is that IF the Dem primaries were winner-take-all, things might've played out differently.

For instance, Richardson and Edwards would've probably dropped out much sooner, so their supporters would've moved to either Clinton or Obama more quickly. This in turn might've changed the outcomes of a few of the other states, and so forth.

Same thing with the Florida/Michigan mess--if they'd just waited their turns, there's no telling how it would've affected things--Edwards dropped out immediately after Florida, remember. The media spin would be different as well, which in turn impacts people's perceptions, and so on.

Your opinions are irrelevant. In the end the Democratic party controls the nominee through the super delegates.

kingMountain: if i'm wrong, that's cool, but your entire premise hinges on the one state with a two-step situation where there was a split this year.

Also a state where Republican were urged by Rush Limbaugh to vote in the democratic primary and to vote for Hillary because they think that McCain can beat Hillary and not Obama. In Ohio it's a felony according to their state laws:

Ohio law requires that citizens genuinely support a political party in order to vote in its primary. To change parties for a primary, a citizen must pledge, under the penalty of election falsification, that she is affiliated with the party and "supports" its principles. Lying on the pledge is a felony, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. The law also stipulates that poll workers have a "duty" to challenge voters who are "not a member of the political party whose ballot the person desires to vote." - taken from here (^)

From what I've been hearing... the 120,000 or so Texans that decided to do that are what tilted the open primary in Hillary's favor. But at least they have a certain 'fail safe' in Texas with the two-step process in which Obama won handily. Seems like if Clinton was going to win Texas cleanly and on her own merits, it would have happened in both. But it didn't and Obama walks away from Texas with more delegates than Hillary in the end.

It's too bad that it is doubtful that those that broke the law in Ohio will be held accountable...

Thought experiment: Bush shouldn't be the president under the electoral college system either, had it been allowed to work.

We can play "if only..." all day.

If it were winner take all, Clinton never would have made to March 4.

AzDownboy [TotalFark] 2008-04-03 02:43:21 PM
Part of the reason the Democrats don't have a "winner take all" system is because they leave the primaries open to non-Democrat voters. This is a very important point to consider when playing parlor games like this

lexslamman 2008-04-03 02:50:43 PM
Who cares about the games? The GOP is swirling around the bottom of the bowl, anyway.

FTA: a remarkable 167 (1427 to 1260) pledged delegate lead.

So in imaginary land, where Clinton has a 160+ delegate lead, it's remarkable, but in reality, where Obama has a 160+ delegate lead, not so much.

Thanks for clearing that up Rasmussen.

I guess the "thought" here is that Obama is just winning because he's taking advantage of some "loophole" where people decide who they want.

Damn, that Obama. For not running his campaign in all hypothetical scenarios.

I mean, if McCain is a shoe in no matter what the Democrats do, why should it matter to you which one wins the nomination?

The Team HillBilly partisan harpies have been pushing this meme for a long time now, and it never ceases to annoy.

Obama's people have been conducting a brilliant campaign, every step of the way. If each state race had been winner-take-all, they would have done things a little differently. No question about it.

This "thought experiment" is pure bullshiat.

And our screwed up system that we have right now is the reason that instead of having the strongest and most experienced candidate already battling the republican nominee, we have the entire party tearing itself apart battling over someone with no experience, credentials or know how versus the most experienced and strongest candidate the party has known in the last 100 years. But of course, as long as it stops a female from finally gaining power, its all good to you fellas, isnt it?

Ok, exactly what qualifies someone to be a senator in your mind? In my mind, it is someone who wins an election for senator. Didn't he do this? And WITHOUT the help of his cheating spouse?

Ok, suppose for argument purposes, I grant your point that Obama is a terribly unqualified politician. Then explain to me why that woman shouldn't be a sufficiently good politician to beat someone who shouldn't even be a junior senator?

Why do Menopausal-Americans think that Hillary Clinton is THE woman to be the first of her gender to hold the Presidency? There are MANY MANY better female politicians that would do a good job.
