(The New York Times) Interesting Discussing the typeface used in Barack Obama's campaign, Gotham. Of course, any discussion of this kind must include a gratuitous shot at the much-despised favorite of secretaries everywhere, Comic Sans   (campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com) divider line 164

+1, I have comic sans, and it is used by our assistants.

"It makes things more fun!" - No it doesn't.

I think my company uses comic sans in some of our advertising (plastered on our service trucks, for example). If not, it's another equally silly typeface that undermines any credibility we might otherwise have had. I did a literal facepalm when I saw it for the first time.

Comic Sans is the typeface equivalent of hitting yourself in the chest with the side of your hand, crossing your eyes and going "dUUUuuerrr*droool*" while trying to bite your own ear.

That is always the exact image that comes into my head as I read it. Don't ever send me anything in Comic Sans.

I'm fond of a nice Garamond myself.

Oh, and fark Microsoft for trying to replace Helvetica with lame-ass Arial. It's not the same thing.

Arial blows goats. I have no idea why it's so popular.

I like Palatino Linotype and Tahoma myself.

Comic sans makes me want to hit things.

It's popular because when Microsoft were looking for a Sans-Serif font for Windows 3.1 onwards (when TrueType first came on the scene), they went with the cheaper Arial, rather than paying LinoType the licence for Helvetica. Hence, it became the defacto standard.

Fascinating little read on it here.

Font is interesting.

Steve Jobs took caligraphy in college, which is why he launched the Macintosh, it came with the unique "Chicago" font.

Yeah, Unright, I'm just a bot. I went to college to study the media and graphic design, so I could be told to digest all these puff-pieces about Obama's typeface and pretend they're not just campaign messages in disguise.

What do you think is the point of this piece being written, placed in the Opinion column of the New York Times, Greenlit, AND placed in the politics thread?

Alright, alright. You're not a bot. Nobody could program a script to be that asininly angry about the most minute nonsense.

Either use your knowledge of fonts to amuse us or GTFO.

Thank you.

If this article were in Geek (where it belongs) I wouldn't have a problem with it. This is just a puff piece, though. I labor over choosing fonts all day for my job, and even I don't understand why this article needed to be written.

I used to use Courier New when I was writing papers because it took up more room than Times New Roman, so I could fill the page quota faster.

/otherwise, it's ugly as sin!
