That sumbiatch is high

That's a very professional band.

You know, it'd be very difficult to know how to play along with Elvis if you had never been exposed to Mississippi gospel church music

.

He should have taken a couple less pills before the show. He's out of it.

The whole thing is pretty sad. He was one of the greatest.

At the 51 second mark: "With an old friend I know (shove it up your nose)..."

Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

You know, there is a great deal of evidence that he thought the whole thing a joke for quite a long time.

Was he getting dance moves from the Brady Bunch?

dillenger69 [TotalFark] 2008-04-03 12:30:54 PM
so ... I guess he's caught in a trap and can't walk out?
He sang the same damn line over and over for the whole song.
That's good?

I did notice that this took place in "the between time" when he was still skinny but dressed like the sweaty chunk he was to become.

For those wondering.. You should only start watching about 3:35 seconds in.

Thank you - I'd given up after 2 minutes.

BTW, "boo" != freakout

I caught that "shove it up your nose" too.

Another great example of "White men can't dance."

You can certainly tell that Elvis could afford the good drugs.

Boritom [TotalFark] 2008-04-03 02:03:34 PM
Is this the one where he calls Lee Majors up on stage, who proceeds to get more cheers than Elvis, and Elvis retaliates by knocking him out and taking a poop in Lee's "bionic" eye?

...or is it the one where Elvis is stoned stupid and makes an ass of himself? Wait... there's literally hundreds of videos like that.

GurneyHalleck [TotalFark] 2008-04-03 02:13:42 PM
I think that's Ron Tutt on drums? He played with Jerry Garcia as well. Great drummer. Don't know who the bass player is, but he's rippin'.

Yeah it is. His son and I once were in a band together. Great guy but != great drummer.

I'm a huge music fan and can usually give respect to bands even if I don't like their sound, but damn, Elvis just sucks. That was terrible.

Compared to 3 or 4 years later, he's not even remotely close to being out of it. Note that he's still maintained his weight pretty closely since the comeback special 2 years previous to this. And he's not slurring the words particularly either. So, no, not out of it.

Elvis was the most over rated piece of shiat ever to cut a record.

He dances for 10 seconds, and is so winded, that he can't even sing.
I thought it was hilarious when Nixon gave him a DEA badge, considering he was one of the biggest drug addicts on the planet.

When he died, it didn't even make the front page, but his estate went right to work creating the Elvis mystique and now, he makes more money than when he was alive.

My favorite Elvis quote was "well, you don't have to know much about music in this business."

Equally hilarious, was when the morons that used to vote in the Playboy music poll, voted him as best guitar player, considering that he barely knew 3 chords, and just used the guitar as a piece of jewelry.

I'm sorry, what? We obviously don't live within the same newspaper delivery area or TV reception range, or something.

You are from Earth right because his death was one of the most covered news stories ever. The TV coverage of his funeral procession was much like what was done for Kennedy and later Reagan. The images of his hearse driving up Elvis Presley Boulevard with thousands of people lining the street are burned into my memory.

He didn't make much press in New York State at all.
Maybe it was a big deal down south, but nobody here really gave a damn.

It was like the fourth, or fifth story on the nightly news, right behind some lady giving birth to quints, or a story about tolls being raised on the Thruway.

Ha ha ha ha ha...

You made me laugh, now how about telling us what really happened?

Elvis was a major dude and to this day many otherwise rational people get bent out of shape by the mere mention of him, yourself included.

I would've been there if I hadn't been just three years old.

Love what Dylan did with his Vegas band on Street Legal, a masterpiece. Wish I were half as cool as Elvis in black leather in '68. But I don't worship him, just appreciate he is/was a major dude and as such respect that.

That's not Elvis.

This is Elvis
(new window)(not a rick roll)

/Still think Buddy Holly pushed Rock and Roll farther. But I still like the King.

Turing_Machine [TotalFark] 2008-04-03 03:41:48 PM
Wow. Talk about stage presence and leaving it out on the stage. He really was the King.

mishmashmusic 2008-04-03 03:42:06 PM
Did Elvis ever mention to anyone that perhaps he was caught in a trap?

You're right about the bass player, he was tearing that up. I had no idea who it was so I looked it up and his name is Jerry Scheff, he's played the bass for a lot of people, he played the bass on the Doors song 'L.A. Woman', which isn't that hard but it sure as hell wears out your hands. And whoever mentioned Ron Tutt, wiki says he was the drummer on 'L.A. Woman', whether thats true or not I've no idea

TheHopeDiamond 2008-04-03 03:50:14 PM
My mom told me that she and my dad went downtown to the movies (still done in 1950s Detroit), and there was a big standup pic of Elvis in the lobby.

It was a promo for Love Me Tender.

It said something like ELVIS IS COMING! and my mom turned to my dad and said "Just what the world needs: Another Italian singer".

"You made me laugh, now how about telling us what really happened?"

I was 18 at the time, so I'm not relying on rumors and legends to remember the facts. Everybody just kinda shrugged, and said "so?"

Like I was saying, maybe it was a big deal down south,(and checking your profile, you are from Tennessee, I'm surprised you haven't nominated him for sainthood yet) but not so much in other places.

He was damned train wreck when he died, and he's making more money now, than when he was alive.

No, really, he didn't even make the front page round these here parts.

His movies were all just ridiculous nonsense, which he himself allude to, saying "while I was busy making all those awful movies, them boys from England, came in and took over".

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2008-04-03 03:59:35 PM
I was working in a large record store in Houston the day he died. Yikes! You know how roaches run and hide when the lights are turned on? This was like the opposite of that. The Elvis zombies were in no mood to be trifled with that day.

No saints for me, no religion... not from TN either, just live here, from Europe.
Still like '70s Elvis though, I like stoned '70s dudes kicking up a bunch of craziness, and he definitely had that.
So how did your news report the moon landing? Did they manage to squeeze that in the day's events?

Then why does your profile say Nashville? I've known quite a few rockabilly musicians, and apparently, they're a much bigger deal in Europe, than in the states.

Yes, they showed the moon landing, on all the channels non-stop.

Perhaps it was because it was something people actually gave a rat's ass about.

TommyymmoT [TotalFark] 2008-04-03 04:23:04 PM
"The King"? Yeah sure. I consider Michael Jackson "my king" as well.

It was in a press release, so I'm compelled to believe it.

aww comeon .. he's awesome.. the king of over the top stage acts

MrStarbuck 2008-04-03 04:32:49 PM
He was hardly over the top in that video. What, just because he had a jumpsuit on? Wow, crazy. Or was it because he could barely sing that one line after he moved his arms around for a little while? Electric.

eatit 2008-04-03 04:35:38 PM
I kinda agree with MrStarbuck. I was bored. Watched the whole thing waiting for the really cool part where he freaks out. Different times for different folks I guess.

Again, that ain't even close.

Check this out for some perspective. Same year he died. Fat, sweaty, forgetting the words. Though he does pull it back together for the end of the song, and his voice is still happening.

Twilight city gonna set my soul
It's gonna set my soul on fire
Got a whole lot of money thats ready to burn
So get those stakes up high

There's a thousand pretty women waiting out there
They're all waiting, they'll never make air
And I'm just the devil with a lung to spare, so

Viva Las Vegas
Viva Las Vegas
Viva Las Vegas

How I wish that there were more
Than the 24 hours in the day
Even if I ran out of speed, boy
I wouldn't sleep a minute of the way

Oh that blackjack and poker and the roulette wheel
Ill poach your money lost on every deal
All you need is sonar and nerves of steel, so

Viva Las Vegas
Viva Las Vegas
Viva Las Vegas

Viva Las Vegas
Where the neon signs flash your name
The one-arm bandits cash in
All soaps down the drain
Viva Las Vegas
Turning day into nighttime
Turning night into daytime
If you see it once
You'll never be the same again

Gotta keep on running
Gonna have me some money
If it costs me my very last dime
If I wind up broke
Then I'll always remember that
I had a swingin' time

Oh, I'm gonna give it everything Ive got
Lady lucks with me, the dice stay hot
Got coke up my nose to dry away the snot, so

Viva Las Vegas
Viva Las Vegas
Viva Las Vegas
Viva, viva Las Vegas
