That's my goal in life.

My mother is a professional opera singer and she though Celine Dion sucked.

I love the movie Titanic. Really. One of the books I read over and over when I was a kid was A Night To Remember by Walter Lord. I was amazed when they found the Titanic, and I was very happy with the movie. I can't listen to any Celine Dion except in that farking movie. So what.

/just saying

I'm not going to disparage anyone else's taste in music. Glass Houses and all that (not a Billy Joel reference).

Amazingly, the same is probably true of most "hip hop" fans too.

/doesn't like Dion or most rap

Two things about Celine Dion.

1) When my father died, my sister wanted to play "My Heart Will Go On" at his funeral. I put my foot down and refused to let that happen. We compromised by playing some other CD song.

2) I never, ever want to lose my hearing, but (as I've been saying for nearly 10 years), if I ever do, my solace will be knowing I'll never have to hear her sing again.

it's more than a bit creepy that she met her husband when she was 12 and he's 26 years older than her.

LowPlainsDrifter 2008-04-03 09:26:24 AM
Well, she is making more cash in a day than most people make in a lifetime. And she manages to run a pretty profitable enterprise as far as her business and marketing efforts are concerned, that lots of people enjoy and pay her for. Props to her for that.

That said, I cannot stand her music at all. Not even the Titanic warble she croaked out a while back. But that's just my taste. If others like her singing, that's fine as well.

I think she has a great voice but not my type of music. and she looks awkward as hell onstage trying to dance or look cool.

I don't think it's any different than people who like techno, trance, rap, metal, opera or anything else. it's all a matter of taste.

What!! Aw man. And to think of all the easy sex I passed up because I wouldn't sit in a theater for 3 hours watching dragged-out melodrama.

Don't tell me it involved ninjas and minibikes too. I might start crying.

This isn't just another example of bashing someone just to support their own sense of self worth is it? I don't like her stuff either but for her concert here in the fall some tickets are going for $500+. I personally don't know anyone who'll pay that but the event is selling out. So between stuff like that and her 10 year stint in Vegas, this sounds like some farker music post or some sour writer that just barely passed journalism class.

It is entirely possible for someone's entire fanbase to be made up of losers.

Look at the alleged "art" of Thomas Kinkade. Show me someone with a Kinkade hanging in their house and I will confidently show you a complete moron.

Unlikely musicians such as Snoop Dogg and Timbaland have taken in her four-year Vegas gig, A New Day

I read about that. They were high, walked in by accident, and couldn't find the door to leave.

It's just her voice that's grating sometimes. But if you created a mix version of every one of her hits and put Miley Cyrus as the lead vocal, then we'd be gyrating to our stereos.

I have personally seen people listen to My Humps without forcing themselves not to take a screwdriver to their eyeballs, so I don't really feel one way or the other about Celine Dion. She has her audience, she does what she does and she does it well, and she didn't do My Humps. Good enough for me.

The_Pole_Of_Justice 2008-04-03 09:35:16 AM
"She represents loyalty and family and romance, and a lot of people around the world relate to that, and see her as articulating those emotions in a way that they feel they are not able."

Yes. And in my experience, the emphasis should be on the words not able.

I'm not a music snob (I own Supertramp records, come on.) But there's a reason why over the top, subtlety free, openly manipulative art is seen as crass and exploitative. It's simple: that's what those words mean.

It's idiotic to judge a person's soul by the music they like, but there are times it can say something about their personality. If it didn't, why would people buy shirts, posters, etc? They want to identify themselves with what that artist/icon represents.

This isn't a matter of differing tastes so much as it's one of what is usually many indicators of personal outlook. If someone owns a Skrewdriver record, it would be silly to call them a racist just for that one possession. But if an angry looking, bald, confrontational guy with a swastika on his shirt has one...

It's an extreme example, but the basic framework still applies. If someone has a Celine Dion CD in their possession, big farking deal: entertainment doesn't have to be high art. But if someone identifies with what she represents (shallow, easy, overcooked emotion,) then it's a warning sign.

In High School, I was a Cure fanatic. Guess what? I was a mopey, depressed teenager. That was a fair call. Same here.
