Can you still have birthdays after you have had your deathday?

Reckon so. I've been doing it for years now...

RIP

One of the greatest White Soul voices ever.

Watch this ~

KING HARVEST HAS SURELY COME (new window)

... and if you saw THE LAST WALTZ, rumor was he was downing 6 bottles of Grand Marnier a day, plus cocaine addiction

I'd much rather celebrate the day an interesting person was born than the day they died.

when I moved to Winter Park, the first thing a local (a cabbie) told me was that Richard Manual killed himself there

I was kind of like, isn't there something else you might want to share first?

Expected to see footage from The Last Waltz, was pleasantly surprised. Thanks, subby.

I believe it. The way his eyes were rolling around in his head that night, I still can't believe he was able to sit up.

If I'm not mistaken, it's from Festival Express. The documentary was finally released just three or four years ago, pretty good stuff. It was worth it just for the footage of Danko drinking, smoking and generally hamming it up with Janis Joplin on a cross-Canada concert tour via rail.

Let the night air cool you off.
Tilt your head back and try to cough.
Don't say nothin' about the things you never saw.
Let the night air cool you off.

I ain't livin' like I should.
A little rest might do me good.
Got to sinking in the place where I once stood.
I ain't livin' like I should.

Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold.
Maybe I can only hear it in my head.
Fifteen years ago they owned that road.
Now it's rolling over us instead.

Richard Manuel is dead.

God forbid you call their bluff.
Like the nightmares ain't enough.
Remember when they used to say that we were tough?
God forbid you call their bluff.

First they make you out to be
the only pirate on the sea.
Then they say Danko would have sounded just like me.
"Is that the man you want to be?"

Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold.
Maybe I could make it bigger overseas.
Fifteen years ago they owned that road.
Now it only gives us somewhere else to leave.

Something else you can't believe.

Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold.
Maybe I can hear poor Richard from the grave.
Singing where to reap and when to sow
when you've found another home you have to leave.

Something else you can't believe.

THIS.

good choice, subby, good choice.
[btw, Last Waltz needed more Richard....]
it's kinda weird to see Robbie with a beard and glassses...neato

i like the original studio version better, tho... Richard's voice was better.... but this one has a certain something with his voice so ragged....
neat organ sound... crazy Garth...

Best Manuel song?

"Katie's Been Gone" from the Basement Tapes. Maybe I'll just go play it (new window) right now.

Got a message in my head
that the papers had all gone
Richard Manuel is dead
And the daylight's coming on
I've been wandering through the dark
now I'm standing on the lawn

Was gonna fart around the house after work tonight. Instead I'll throw on the Last Waltz (played loud of course), drink some Grands Marnier and reflect...

Ahhhhhhh, look, it's an "adult portion"

Is there anything cooler than Levon Helm's stickwork with his left hand? Not even a drummer, but every time I see one of these clips, I'm in awe. Someone else can probably speak better to this.

Levon always looks like he's having a good time.

THIS!! I've been in awe of Levon since I first stumbled upon the Last Waltz by accident many years ago. I'm not a drummer either, but man, if I were, that's how I'd want to play them.

Anyone ever hear his live album Whispering Pines: Live At The Getaway? That album is one of the rawest, most emotional portrayals of an artist I've ever seen. Richard Manuel is my answer to the thread about what artist would be playing in Heaven.
