The ironing is a lie.

They should be sued for $200,000 per violation! That'll learn 'em.

Oh come on, its software. Everyone pirates that. It's not like there are starving software engineers out there who expect to be paid for their work. They are just geeks anyway and don't touch peoples lives like musicians.

Loving it... and think it's hilarious as hell.

From the comments:

Respect to the software company for suing for a SENSIBLE amount of damages. Good to see when most others given the same chance would try for the millions...

And I ask ... why? When BMG is going after people for ridiculous amounts, why not let them face a little bit of the same?

how will Sony BMG ever be taken seriously again when a such a precedent has been exposed?

Simple. I can almost guarantee that they will come out and say that some software/IT guy installed those programs without their knowledge, and that the "guilty person(s)" have been dealt with. Bull. Shiat.

This will just be swept under the rug, and they'll continue what they're doing. Sure, it's going to ruffle some feathers for awhile, and the rest of us will remember it. But it isn't going to change a thing.

The article says that 18% of Australians are filthy pirates. This number is probably higher in countries with greater population density and internet penetration.

I wanted to say that something this widespread can't stay illegal for long, but then I remembered the war on drugs.

if I were running that company, i'd sue 'em for a couple hundred million.

Considering that Australians are the children of Britain's criminals, I'm surprised it's such a low number.

Australian internet penetration is going fine thanks, currently ranked about #6 for users (per capita) by country.

(Israel is about #29 by the way, guess my eWeener is bigger!)

The more you know!

I guess population density is not as big a factor as I thought.
Is the internet infrastructure in Australia privatized?

alienchickenpie 2008-04-03 05:25:34 AM
Correction, I meant to ask if it's open to competition and not in the hands of a monopoly or an oligopoly, government or otherwise.

global wombats [TotalFark] 2008-04-03 06:14:57 AM
The biggest telco, Telstra, is still half-owned by the government, which the last government kept trying to sell. Not sure of the policy of the new government.

Competition with it has been encouraged for over a decade anyway, tho it is still the major force in telecommunication.

ISPs are many and varied, quite healthy competition I guess.

Hey! I'm British and I don't copy from the internet, but my mate does and he's got 150,000 tracks which I borrow when I want.
Indefinitely.

You know that Australia consists of big metro areas around the edges and a huge desert that nobody lives in, so for practical purposes the density is similar to the US (or I'd imagine Israel)?

I hope they get sued (and lose) $10,000 per use. fark them. If I could shiat on their CEO and board of directors right now, I'd start eating a ton of beans and drinking a crap load of a Mountain Dew/Coffee cocktail.

Yes, but software companies lose money. This could affect how employee's get raises or whether they still have jobs.

aaaaah ... I get it now.

Bart: [chuckles] Lisa's in trouble. Ha! The ironing is delicious.
Lisa: The word is "irony".
Bart: Huh?
Lisa: Don't you think there's something weird going on here? We spent all day
selecting fabric swatches, and then our guest speaker was Phil from
marketing.
Bart: All's I know is I'm getting straight A's, and that ain't not bad!

FTA: French company PointDev, which makes applications for Microsoft Windows, claims to have discovered pirated versions of its software installed on Sony BMG computers and is suing the label for €300,000 ($514,910).

And Microsoft Windows was found using pirated Sony software.

Now we just need PointDev to have some pirated XP keys sitting around and we have a circle of proof that copyright law is doomed.
