Hmmm. I like, Jimmi, Led Zepplin, Jethro Tull, and CSN&Y, and some how I'm still a raging liberal. Guess I'm the tail on the bell curve or something.

Ted Nugent isn't classic rock? Really? Is it because he's a partisan Republican?

I think Terrible Ted kicks ass, and I'm old enough to have been alive in the 70s when his best stuff came out. So yeah, off!

I call BS.

Republicans are still listening to RADIO stations... because they are conservative and the last to ADAPT to new entertainment mediums.

I doubt very seriously that the majority of followers of "rock" music are Republican.

Neurochemist: I doubt very seriously that the majority of followers of "rock" music are Republican.

To be fair, smitty did say "classic rock fans". And given the radio station lineup here in the Seattle area, your point and the headline match up nicely:

KZOK - Classic Rock
KISW - "Seattle's Best Rock", they play some new stuff and some metal, but TONS of classic rock
KJAQ - Jack FM in Seattle, which means A LOT of classic rock
KISM (Bellingham) - Classic Rock

I'm sure I've forgotten one or two that also have classic rock as part of their format.

And I don't know if my political bent (left-ish) has anything to do with it, but I almost never listen to music on the radio anymore. At home, I have a USB transmitter from my laptop to my sound system, and on the road, I play music off my Treo 650 (which has an SD card slot).

Funny side story.

I lived in Tennessee for a time and one day the classic rock station did a random shuffle event for the day. They made a big deal about how the DJ's had no control over the selection. At one point, Enter the Sandman (that's Metallica for you youngsters) came on. I, of course, thought nothing of it, but the phone lines were immediately assaulted by good 'ole boys screaming "You get that crap off my station and play some real rock and roll!"

OK, back to the flamewar.

Tail end of spelling Jimmi with two 'm's.

The Jacobs Media's Media/Technology Web Poll IV of more than 27,000 respondents...

Web poll = Bullshiat.

Always. No exceptions.

Giving them some perceived legitimacy by putting it online only adds another layer to the BS.

It's BS "polls" like this that lead to people concluding (erroneously) that ALL polls are BS.

The media is biased. There are heavily biased against getting off their asses and doing some real GD-fkn reporting.

Funny story, though.

I stopped listening to music in the car a few months ago. It's now Bill Press on the way to work and Thom Hartmann on the way home. I spend 2 hours at the gym each day, so that's when I get my fill of hard rocking.

Did you say classic rock?
And lest I forget...
And my favorite band, why not

I think the defining difference between GenX and Millennial Echo Boom Y (what ever the they're calling it now) is whether you remember it being cool to like Metallica. If you were an Aerosmith fan the first time they were big, you're probably on the tail end of Boomer. If you call Nirvana classic rock, you're not only a Millennial, but you're going to get cockpunched by me.

/defined as Millennial by some sources and Gen X with others, but identify far more with Gen X than snowflakes.
//b. in 81, class of 00. I think 81 is probably the last year where you spent any time as a teenager watching hours of Vids on MTV, graduated prior to the dotcom boom, and already in college for 911.

I cannot emphasize THAT enough.

I love The Beatles, The Doors, Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan... you name it, and I'm pulling solidly for Obama.

Unfortunately, the term "classic rock" seems to have been hijacked by the racist and mullet/wife beater donning crowd to mean the likes of Poison and Van Halen.

Don't you see the flaw in your logic? They are the last to adapt to something new, so they still like the same tired songs from the 1970s. Zepp just ain't revolutionary any more.

This actually makes a lot of sense. I mean hell, if nothing else, Pop music today is dominated by "harlots and black folk." Not exactly Limbaugh's idea of a good time. I've been to some backward-assed redneck dive bars in my time, and they all played your standard Classic Rock fare.

/The fear of having something in common with conservatives in this thread is hilarious

And I think you are thinking of the early Beatles, 1966 and before.

That said, this story may be true, because a lot of the 'classic rock' generation sold out. After all, aren't they all the douche bags that got us into our current mess and elected Bush twice, even though a lot of them were protesting Vietnam back in the day? Guess it wasn't a lesson learned.

/throwing gas on the flames

Timdesuyo 2008-04-03 01:36:13 AM
I don't really understand how this could possibly work...

The Beatles, The Stones, Zepp, Simon and Garfunkle, Hendrix... these are the classic rock that we are speaking of, right?

How could someone idealize these artists and at the same time, insist that the things that made the cornerstones of their art and expression be illegal?

I mean, I'll admit to a little cognitive dissonance when I think about some of the Led Zepp underage girls stories, or about the sheer volume of what Keith Richards has consumed, but, on the basic levels, Rock Stars are generally among the most liberal of our population.

Sadly, I think the Republican version of Classic Rock is the ZZ Top and AC/DC rejects that they play nonstop on the Clear Channel ``classic rock' stations.

I love having conversations with conservative old "classic rock" fans.

Old man: Jackson Browne, now there was a hell of a songwriter.
Me: yeah, I saw him a couple of years ago at a Vote For Change concert, he's still got it.
Old man: ...and then that farkin' liberal scum had to go and try to tell us his opinions on stuff.
