She's been saying this sort of thing for a long time. And she is a black woman, so it's okay if she says it.

Tupac was a great artist. His music was not only good but it was intelligent and addressed social issues facing the black community. His rap did not contribute to the degradation of the black community. And he was killed for it by the CIA.

The CIA then replaced him with rappers completely devoid of intelligence who "[make] drug use glamorous" because the CIA sells crack to blacks in order to fund their illegal operations and keep the WASP status quo.

Remove all Republicans: addressed social issues facing the black community.

Oh, nice bait, and props for originality.

And his fellow black people killed him for it.

Remove all Republicans: Oh, nice bait, and props for originality. Missed the Biggie connection though.

Why do you assume I'm trolling? Yes, what I said would definitely be considered controversial, and I must admit that I lack the credibility of a research university study, so my statements can not be taken quite as seriously, thus if anything, the linked article would be considered more of a flame-bait than I, a mere poster with relevant and partially outlandish ideas.

And the CIA also killed Biggie (probably).

WRONG! rap is like CNN for suburban white teens who think they will be cooler and might actually get some if they act "black".

/quotations for dumb white kids who confuse actual african american culture with rappers.

Well, there's sure as hell not a real widespread movement to differentiate between the two.

Rap is the cancer of all music. I don't even know how you can call it "music", and the "rap bands" don't usually play any instruments. Just a cd, or a record. While some guy struts around the stage talking into a mic.

In response to the charge that he is airing African Americans' dirty laundry, Cosby said, "Let me tell you something. Your dirty laundry gets out of school at 2:30 every day, it's cursing and calling each other n----- as they're walking up and down the street."

I love Bill Cosby.

You make a valid point, but there is definitely such a thing as good rap. However, good rap is generally not what Sinutab and Propecia are blasting as they roll by in their run down impalas on 24s.

Nope. It is non-musical, and derivative of tribal music. Tribal music means something. Rap doesn't mean anything important in the world. It's fake.

You're saying that a form of music (or not-music, whatever) can never be good? Someone singing over a beat and some music can be meaningful, but someone talking rhythmically over a beat and maybe some music can never be meaningful?

That's very true for the most part, but much of it is also built on image. I'm not trying to cheerlead for the bullshiat gangsta assbags by any means, but I hate the culture associated with rap more than I hate the music itself, and I also think this is the disconnect that most people have with the genre. If you dig deeply enough, it's possible to find good rap that's not all about how many hos i banged and blunts I smoked, although I concede that the latter is most assuredly much more representative of the body of rap songs. Try not to generalize, though.

Name two lines of meaningful rap lyrics, which are important to you.

I'm saying that there is no good rap music, because it degrades its source in favor of wealth.

I've found it a useful time-saver to ignore the comments of anyone who talks about "rap music" as a genre.

"Hip-hop", is a wonderful, expressive, emotional form of music, that is important to millions of people.

"Rap music" is a term used by media commentators and the musically myopic as scapegoat for a wide variety of social problems.

I know you're just trolling, so any example I pull won't be good enough to change your mind. Still, The Streets' A Grand Don't Come for Free is all pretty great. It spends an album building characters and a storyline, has a climax and lessons learned. But even a more mainstream group like Public Enemy tackles social issues in some of their songs. As you know, you can pull examples from any music to make it look like it has no redeeming value - even the Beatles had "happiness is a warm gun" oh noes everything they do is violent!!1

Regarding the quote, I was watching a documentary a couple years back on the origins of gangsta rap (west coast yo) and Ice Cube and Russell Simmons described the origins of rap as a street-music/cultural-music movement as "CNN for the streets, CNN for black people." So... maybe she heard that/it's a common observation? Not saying what mainstream rap is CNN for black people, or anyone...Fox News maybe.

I'm not trolling. It's a response to a headline about a UC Berkeley professor who published many articles about how rap music is linked to black people, and how, apparently black people are influenced by rap music.

De La Soul: Rock Co Kane Flow

Actually that was kind of ignorant. What I meant to say is that, in general, rap music doesn't have anything important to say which is valuable to humanity or will improve humanity, except for the people who rap.

Yes, it is. I do not think rap music is a meaningful form of music in today's society. It is an important form of music, because it makes a lot of money for the successful rappers. It doesn't do anything for anyone else. It doesn't increase black or white people's wealth. There is no donation to musical culture except for bad poetry and sexist limericks.

Let's assume you have a 12 year old kid. Are you going to teach him about rap music? If you do, why do you think that's wise?
