Are they still alive? I only listen to R.E.M. when I'm trying to bore myself to sleep.

I refuse to answer the questions of anyone who references the man who was guilty of one of the greatest crimes of the 20th Century: assigning a positive image to, constructing seemingly-reasonable arguments for, and thus legitimizing the most damnably damaging viral strain of political thought that this country has ever had to survive.

His disapproval of George W. Bush made me laugh so hard I couldn't stand it. He created & relentlessly championed the political movement that made Bush possible! I practically shouted at the screen, "For Christ's sake, this is all your fault! Couldn't you see what your "work" was going to lead to? What did you THINK was going to happen?!"

I once heard the story of a young woman who attended a small, liberal-arts college. During her first semester her teachers were worried about her, she didn't seem to talk much or otherwise participate in class. When her adviser talked to her about what was going on, it turned out that her parents had told her never to listen to anything a liberal had to say. She thought that everyone at a liberal-arts college was a liberal. Boy was she mistaken.

Don't mistake my apparently-failed attempt to humorously perpetuate a TF meme with any support for WFB.

I've heard 2 tracks from the new album, and they're not very good. I hope the rest of it is better. The Katrina song will make you want to kill yourself just right after you get finished killing the band.

It figures the WFB haters saw fit to wait until he died before enlightening everyone... to afraid to match wits with the man I suppose.

/Saying that WFB is directly responsible for W is retarded.

Not sure how or why this whole liberal thing came up..... but liberal IS NOT a four letter word. If something along its line of thinking never came about I'm sure most of us would be working 80 hour weeks with no time off or sick pay for even less pennies. It seems some are trying to move us toward that again. We need more liberal to counter the mess we have now running this place IMO. And frankly I wish the liberal kicked people in the ass who have spun it into a four letter word. Left and right both dropped the ball years ago with this whole Bush thing.

As for REM...they're OK. Songs sound a bit the same. Do like that song that goes..."This One Goes Out To The One I Love." Don't own anything by them though.

A lot of predictable music puts me to sleep. Doesn't mean it has to be soft music. Some heavy Metal is boring and safe as shiat too. Some of my most exciting music is rather a whisper than a scream.

The new R.E.M. album is great. Best they have put out in many many years.

dugitman [TotalFark] 2008-03-31 02:32:41 PM
So happy to see/hear this album. Yeah, maybe I'm harking back to college in the 80's but you know what? Tough shiat. I, for one, welcome BACK our androgynous, jangly, southern overlords.

SuburbanCowboy: The new R.E.M. album is great. Best they have put out in many many years.

That's the general consensus, but I'm not so sure now after digesting it a little... it's been compressed and amplified to hell, for a start.

I may be the only one... but I really like Around the Sun. Sometimes an album just finds you at the right time though.

In my opinion NAIHF is the best thing they've done with Warner Bros., so far. I am anxious to listen to this new one.

I can't distinguish between the IRS catalog... they're all fantastic.

You're NOT the only one. I freaking love that record, much more than the new one. Everyone seemed to like it when it came out in 2004, but now it's remembered as REM's Giant Blunder. I don't get it.

If Peter Buck ever does quit the band, leaving Stipe and Mills to do keyboard-based dreamy atmospheric dream-pop, i would be totally on board for that.

-is lame-

Satanic_Hamster 2008-04-01 03:42:29 PM
I like all the R.E.M. albums.

However... Their first six? Pure awesome.

Then the 90's rolled around, and the following four were a bit different. And then the next few were even more different. Most people that really hate R.E.M.'s last six or so albums really love the first six and just can't get over the fact that a band would DARE change their sound over a period of 20 years.

Satanic_Hamster: Spin Doctors' Pocket Full of Kryptonite

Heh, I didnt like that album or band very well. However there was a song on it called "How Could You Want Him"? that is one of my favorite hippie tunes. I remember the sound quality always pissed me off cause it was recorded lower than other discs in my state-of-the-art 5 disc changer set to "SHUFFLE ALL"

Satanic_Hamster 2008-04-02 07:17:02 AM
Spin Doctors were an interesting group. Sort of. They were horrible live. Jesus Christ were they horrible. Saw them open for the Stones while in high school.

Their followup album(s)? Never heard anything good about them, never listened to them.

But their first album had a couple of really good tracks, especially Jimmy Olsen Blues.

i got the new REM cd/dvd combo at target for $18, and i must say the cd alone imho is worth that price...i've yet to watch the dvd, but i'm sure that's a great bonus.

SPIN DOCTORS are coming here to texarkana for the "jump jive & jam" festival...i'm going! saw them about 15 years ago with soul asylum and screaming trees in little rock and that was an all-around great show!
