Because you thought it would be cheaper if they built a Hershey Highway instead?

Make sure it's wide enough for tanks.

Why would anyone want to travel between Alaska and Russia/Siberia via driving?

Trucking of goods across?

Talk about a bridge to nowhere.

Can anyone justify this?

JSieverts [TotalFark] 2008-03-30 08:08:58 PM
as opposed to an overwater tunnel?

KarmicRetribution 2008-03-30 08:10:07 PM
It's a magic trick. In Putin's right hand we have a bright shiny object, er, tunnel linking Siberia and Alaska. What's in his other hand that he doesn't want us to see?

Either that or he's playing Risk, and is planning to stop us from getting 5 armies for North America

Danger Avoid Death 2008-03-30 08:10:33 PM
Sounds like someone taking Risk too seriously.

olddinosaur 2008-03-30 08:12:44 PM
A bridge between the USSA and the USSR has been proposed many times.

It involves 38 miles of suspension between the two continents, in water averaging 68 feet deep and very cold temperatures.

It would be costly, I would say $33 billion is light, but there is nothing stopping it from being done.

Direct highway overland from Seattle to the bridge itself would be harder.

BBRModitha 2008-03-30 08:15:03 PM
Why would we need a link from Russia to Alaska?

back off Putin, that's Sen. Stevens job.

NavyBlues 2008-03-30 08:20:56 PM
I think the railroad gauge is different between US and USSR, which would mean that either one country would have to change, or you'd need some kind of 007 device that changes the wheel width on all rail cars as they cross over into the Red. Granted, changing the wheels might take some time but I think it'd be faster than shipping goods overwater with the concomitant loading/unloading at ports. Interesting, but don't we have more important things to worry about?

Think of the polar bears! (The hippies that wouldn't let us drill in ANWR will LOVE this idea.)

Palooka_Joe 2008-03-30 08:21:39 PM
Maybe he can get Poland to supply the screen doors.

We can get our crap from China without having to pay the overhead of them loading it onto a boat.

At least 3 eskimos will definitely benefit from this. And one babushka.

Damn you KarmicRetribution!! Beat me to the Risk reference by 26 seconds (and you were funnier, adding insult to injury). Maybe I did do something wrong in a past life.

He must be bored to propose it again.

FatherDale 2008-03-30 08:25:47 PM
I'm sure it has nothing to do with this: Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea football club and governor of Chukotka, has invested £80m in the world's largest drill but has denied that it is linked with the development.

The only use I can see for this would be a cool set for a Bond film.

Is this the new Chupakabra? It seems like a goldfish's little plastic castle. It's new every time I see it. Hey! Look! A little plastic castle! Where the hell did that come from?

A bridge? From Alaska to Kamchatka? NO WAI!

This is going to be great. When China finally decides to become the #1 superpower in the world, they won't have to worry about how to transport their forces to North America.

I fail to see how there is any question about an invasion coming across from this tunnel. I would imagine that an underwater will be fairly simple to destroy for our nation if we were to go to war. The results of an army coming across an underwater tunnel to invade then having the enemy detonating the tunnel on there end would be like Moses dropping the red sea on the Egyptians.
