Okay. Every couple months, I read a story similar to this. They found X pill reverses liver damage, Y molecule cures cirrhosis, Z suppository revitalizes your liver and abolishes hangovers (eh, I'd take it).

I tell people about these stories. "Good news everyone, we're not all going to die from liver damage after all!" A few months later, all of these friends are asking, "Hey, what happened to that pill, I went ahead and bumped up my alcohol intake to compensate, it'd better be coming."

So...what happened to all of those other medicines in the pipeline? Inquiring alcoholics want to know.

Should we really be trying to extend the lives of alcoholics?

As an alcoholic, I'm going to emphatically say yes!

Now to get to the bar, I'm tragically out of booze at the house...

"Should we really be trying to extend the lives of alcoholics?"

Reversing cirrhosis would be a major medical breakthrough and you viciously self righteous hate filled inhuman monsters can find solace in the fact that there are other causes besides alcohol abuse.

Alcoholic rats or not, there are lots of folks whose health suffers because of past/present alcohol use, and if we can reduce the numbers of people seeking liver transplants it helps. Also, think of how much money the health care system saves by reducing the costs of chronic care with cirrotic liver disease.

Failing_Junk: Should we really be trying to extend the lives of alcoholics?

At my last paracentesis(p), the doctor told me that about 70% of the liver transplants performed in her hospital are because of Hepi C. Most transplant panels won't even consider giving a new liver to an alcoholicoontil they've had at LEAST a year of therapy and alcohol rehabilitation.
