Let us hope not...

RIP, muscle car guy.

That sucks... Goodnight, muscle-car man.

\funny thing is, never had either around - mom had a Duster & neighbor had a Road Runner....

I have a '70 'Cuda and I didn't know this guy was responsible for it's design?

That's sad too.

/not a hemi
//also sad

That '71 redesign was awesome and even now I still have to look when I see Mopar muscle from that year. Just before the pork got overwhelming and the emissions standards really clamped down.

Glass Joe: As a dude you who owned a '69 Plymouth Roadrunner and '69 Satellite, and a lover of Mopar, I salute ya.

In college I owned a '73 Satellite. Serious power. My friends nickamed it the "Bruiser Cruiser". I had bought it from a motion picture vehicle supplier who had purchased it from an LAPD surplus fleet auction. I still remember laughing over people -- even cops -- mistaking it for an undercover cop car.

I sold the Bruiser Cruiser to a coworker when I bought a new car. His wife totalled it 3 months later. I almost cried when I found out. That big, wonderful beast held a lot of good memories for me. I wish I'd kept it.

First car was a '68 Belvedere. Dad was a Chrysler dealer.

R.I.P.

ecmoRandomNumbers: That's not a 'Cuda. THIS is a 'Cuda...

Actually it's a Valiant with a fastback roof. Eventhough the Barracuda beat the Mustang to market by three weeks they are still called "Pony Cars" not "Fishy Cars".

The '70 Cuda was the best of the breed.

Agreed. Also, wasn't the '70 Barracuda the first to be named 'Cuda'?

Nice headline subby. Guy designed some great cars.

as a big classic car fan (of pontiacs, olds, buicks and mopars) I salute him.

god bless you sir and may god give you a 70 cuda to drive on the streets of gold.

I have a book all about mopars and it includes him in it.

Sad headline. But so true.

/first saw a 'Charger' in '82 or '83 as an 11 year-old. It was the 'Charger 2.2'. Ha.

My cousin had a GTX in high school. Black on black. That thing was so dang fast. No one ever beat him.

Wingzinco 2008-03-30 09:13:09 PM
John was a very good guy and, as a teenager, it was always fun to see what he brought home to drive on the weekends. Great designs, will be missed. RIP Mr. Herlitz.

Chrysler also designed the DSM Eclipse/Talon cars. Best looking coupes for the past 20 years.

Farking Sweet: Chrysler also designed the DSM Eclipse/Talon cars. Best looking coupes for the past 20 years.

I do not agree, and here is why:

www.cars.com

The Talon/Eclipse had a stupid tumor looking bulge in it's hood. Not to mention that those cars are junk. What other monstrosities do you consider "good looking", Pontiac Aztecs?

I own two classic Plymouths ('73 Duster and a '78 Arrow) and I'm very sad to see this guy go. There will never be cars that look as good as the ones he designed.

Lar Jorgen: Agreed. Also, wasn't the '70 Barracuda the first to be named 'Cuda'?

Nope, technically it came out in '69. If you chose the 'Cuda trim package in 1969, your car would come with a 340 or 383.

/Gonna go reread my Challenger and 'Cuda book again.

Farking Sweet 2008-03-30 09:37:52 PM
Are you kidding? The 2009 Challenger is a complete copy of the 1970 yet with middle age spread. It loks like it should be saying "if only Coach had played me in 1982!"

Love the '70 GTX. I went to high school with a guy who bought a Hemi 4 speed '70 Superbird in orange. We all thought he was crazy for spending $10k on it in '78. I do believe he got the last laugh.

How about the Plymouth VIP? The car that thinks it's a house!

Just personal preference. Of course 450bhp and AWD will put on some rose colored glasses. My favorite 1st gen DSM:

Body by Chrysler and asskicking 4G63 Turbo engine, multi link independent suspension and all wheel drive system by Mitsubishi.

383's are crap engines, so are 426 hemis. I'll take a good 440 any day though.

Subby here, and even though I never got to experience those cars, I did get to drive my dad's old '68 Newport convertible with the tinkerer's-wet-dream 440 Big Block keeping your feet warm. Alas, a seized oil pump followed by a rod through the block on the highway a decade ago ended my chance of inheriting it.

It's the truth. That isn't even close to a muscle car. They are junk. Hate to break it to you, but, they are throw away POS's.

I did like the 1st gen DSM turbo/awd coupes, but I would never say best looking. They were cheap and were super tunable.

Current cars:

'64 1/2 Mustang convertible 289 5 speed,Pony interior and GT accessories. Midnight Turquoise over white.

'66 Thunderbird convertible 390 Vintage Burgundy over black.

Previous notables:
'67 Pontiac Grand Prix convertible
'63 Lincoln Continental convertible (suicide doors)
'69 Olds 442 400 Hurst 4-speed.

Nice Falcon Gorbishof

[Elwood Blues Jake Blues has a fight over the police car Elwood Blues got after he traded away the original bluesmobile for a microphone]
Elwood: You don't like it?
Jake: No I don't like it...
[Elwood Blues floors the pedal and jumps over an open drawbridge]
Jake: Car's got a lot of pickup.
Elwood: It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?
[a brief thinking pause while Jake attempts to light a cigarette]
Jake: Fix the cigarette lighter.

Thanks. I've been having a great time with it. Only had it for about 2 months.

Damn, that sucks. Buddy of mine owns a '71 Cuda that he put back together after buying it in pieces from a scrap yard. Some friends of mine up the road have a '70 GTX 440.6 (with 70K original miles on the ticker and the Air Grabber hood) and a '67 GTX, which also has the 440.6 plant.

Absurdly, obscenely fast cars, all of them.
