I read this with the intent of forming a strong opinion in support of one side or the other based on the facts of the article, and intended to voice that opinion in this thread with significant amounts of derogatory snark for the side I felt to be in the wrong. But after completing the article, I find that I don't care even the tiniest bit for either side, and wish nothing but ill on all of them. Maybe it's just been a bad day.

My area gets buzzed by news & police choppers fairly regularly. They're loud but you get over it.

"The question is, how far do we want to go with this?" said Brian Shive. "When I get home, I like to have some peace and quiet."

Then you should move somewhere else. I mean Jebus, the area is specifically known for its aircraft activity and has a long history of same.

ExitKloie 2008-03-30 04:07:30 PM
this happens in my homecountry frequently, people move in next to an airport, and are promptly shocked that planes actually fly above their house, or they move in next to a railwaytrack and are suprised when trains actually pass by, or they move into the citycenter and are suprised when there is a marathon so they cant drive their little snowflake to the daycare center.

How can you afford these things!?!?

aside from the helo thing- my neighbor likes to spend all weekend blowing his leaves around with that noisy ass backpack blower. There's no rhyme or reason to what he does, he just blows them around every weekend, and his property is still covered in leaves.

Helicopters will be not allowed in residential ares except for Cheney and Rumsfeld.

No, this isn't the same as the farmer who has used a tractor for 40 years, only to have some new subdivision residents complain. This guy's only used the helicopter for a short amount of time.

I'd like to know how loud this one is... if it's not over-the-top loud, let him use it during reasonable hours. However, if we're talking Qwest Field kind of loud... that's probably a bit much.

RoyBatty 2008-03-30 04:09:19 PM
I would love my own private helicopter and helipad, so more props to this guy.

That said, I doubt it's two minutes on startup and two minutes on shutdown. Knowing very little about it, but observation, I frequently see the Hughes 500s that are built across the street taking and the Mesa Police Hughes 500 taking more like 5-10 minutes to warm up and shutdown. Not sure why, I always figured that they wanted to avoid thermal shock to their very expensive engines.

The very same thing happened in my neighborhood when I was a kid (well, in high school). The only difference was, this guy didn't get any permits and still built a helipad. Needless to say, most of the neighbors complained and forced him to stop. He sold his house (sans the helipad) very quickly.

My neighbor used to let his friend keep his helicopter in his back yard, so I am getting a kick out of these replies. . .

But really, they would take it out a couple times a week and after the cool factor it was just another thing going on. Grass mowing, motorcycles, leaf blowers, race cars (mine) and a helicopter. Really, out of all of them the leaf blowers are the worst - that high-pitch 2-stroke can get to you.

If forced to move my 'copter to the local airport, I would comply.
And I would fly every day.

Right over to the lady's house that is the biggest complainer.

And hover.
And hover some more.
And some more.

Get up tomorrow, rinse, repeat.

Blue Thunder isn't connected to Apocalypse Now. There were Hughes 500s in Vietnam (the OH-6 or LOH), there weren't any Gazelles.

I've never understood leaf blowers. They just put the leaves that are here over there. We need leaf suckers, bag em up and get rid of them. Or at least, the "over there" is a long way off.

They are quiet (for aircraft), and they're fast (182 MPH, maybe better now, and have a good payload). I saw one for sale for $750,000.

I wonder how fast I might go on rollerblades with a gas-powered leaf blower. 182 MPH? That'd be cool, the speed record for rollerblades is 176 MPH.

Agreed. If you're privileged enough to live in a place like that, just lock yourself in your panic room and cry about it. Don't waste city council time when they should be like fixing potholes and getting rid of cigarette vending machines and crap like that.
