Went to Canada recently. I was actually disappointed. Canadians are great guests, not very good hosts.

It depends where you go. I spent time in rural Alabama and if it were my first time in the US Id think all Americans are a bunch of backwards redneck-racists.

Canada has a few places like you described, it depends where you go.

Here are a few reasons IMO:

1. more stable currency (at the moment)
2. lots of resources per capita
3. proximity to the US without actually being a part of it
4. closer ties to Europe
5. not considered an immediate threat to anyone, certainly not compared to the southern neighbor

Hows that economy doing? It seems lots of other countries know who we are since we're doing a fark load of business with them. It seems our largest trading partner hasnt been buying anything more than oil from us lately.

Great points. All the benefits of the US with none of the current costs (Iraq, economy, global isolation).

That reminded me of the time I was in Italy. There was a girl walking around in shorts with CANADA written on the back. hyperspacemonkey: We never run out of snark, if that is what you mean.

Exactly. Not a lot of courtesy if you are a guest. I don't hassle people visiting from outside the U.S. about politics, but as soon as someone hears you are from the U.S., that's all you hear.

The other part that was annoying was the constant diatribe about how diverse Canada and welcoming is. And by diverse, they mean 3rd generation immigrants from Italy. But try spotting a black or a brown person.

There is almost a blind trust in the government and its intentions. Far different from the U.S. where we always view the government with distrust and criticism. The funny part is that Canada takes all its mistrust on government and directs it to the U.S., almost never within.

Also, if you are in tourist areas the police treat you like shiat. Several Canadians have gotten their asses beat when they frequent more tourist areas. The police think they were visiting Americans.

Now, before someone launches into OUR police, I'd be the first to say are equal opportunity ass kickers.

But Canadians tell us they aren't flag wavers. I guess they just slap the Maple Leaf on their ass and pretend that isn't flag waving.

A few years back I was at a 4 day rock festival on the US/Canadian border that took place July 1 - July 4...so it straddled Canada Day and the 4th of July. The crowd was a mix of Americans and Canadians (the canucks were all there to see their national heros..Nickleback).

The Canadians were by far the biggest jingoist flag wavers. Something in their inferiority complex drives them to excess when confronted by Americans on Canada Day.

For what it's worth, I'm a Canadian and am absolutely disgusted by the behaviour of my fellow country people when they visit other countries. It's like they expect people to be oh so very impressed by the fact that they're Canadian. If I see one more "Canada Kicks Ass" t-shirt, I am going to purge with the holy fire of 1000 demons.

14 years of federal budget surpluses can buy a lot of maple syrup.

Our political system is better. 5 main parties instead of 2. So lots of choices. And when someone screws up they get sacked and replaced. Politics is definitely much more interesting.

Roto-Rot 2008-03-30 02:59:20 PM
Canada doesn't really have Nationalism in the sense that the US does. People from Alberta and Quebec tend to go on about how special they are. You never hear anyone say that they are proud to be from Ontario (unless they are from Kingston which gets really annoying). Torontonians are universally accepted to be douchebags. Otherwise, it's quite serene here.

Americans don't trust their government. But it doesn't matter if you don't trust them because there is nothing you can do about it. How's that war going?

Sure Canadians trust the gov more. But we can easily switch governments whenever we don't like them (lose trust). Canadian government did not go to Iraq. So I can see why it is easier to trust them.

Not at all. I live in greater Vancouver, where the "foreigners" (as you put it) are in the majority. It makes for a wonderful multi-cultural experience, and everyone seems to live in relative harmony. The difference between this and a number of major American cities I've visited seems to be the lack of glorification of so-called "gansta" culture that seems to be so prevalent among certain cultural groups in the United States.

hyperspacemonkey 2008-03-30 03:02:05 PM
nuclear_asshat: Let it rip, man. I have yet to see the limits of our nationalistic hypocrisy. But while you are good at pointing out all kinds of flaws in our national multicultural myth, there are explanations for the other stuff you saw when you were here. Like, you must have not been on the coast of Lake Ontario, if everyone you saw were white people.

Roto-Rot: Canada doesn't really have Nationalism in the sense that the US does.

I agree, Canadians rarely go on about how proud they are to be Canadians...to each other. Whereas in America, you could just be sitting on a bar stool and some stranger will look at you over his Coors Light and say "dang, I'm proud to be an American!" And it wouldn't be weird at all. (only slightly exaggerating for effect)

Canadian sure are glad to tell *other* people how happy they are to be Canadians though. They'll talk your ear (and anyone else's in the room) off about it. Usually the unspoken closing of that declaration is also... "dang, I'm glad I'm not American!".

Don't get me wrong, I actually like many things about Canada. I just think they (painting with a broad brush here) focus too much on what makes them different rather than embracing what is similar between the US and Canada. I can understand why they do it. I just disagree that it needs to be done.

Aside from repeating ignorant hearsay like a lemming, how would you even know that? I've only ever had treatment in this country, and they're fine. I'm alive, healthy, and not riddled with debt just so I can talk to a physician.

Ursa Minor: I encourage them to come and do their survey on my reserve (That's 'reservation' for all you USAians).

There is definitely dislike against reservations. Sad but true.
They need to better themselves. Non natives can not change how natives act or are perceived in society. Simply look at the Caledonia and other native protests. They can go block roads and railways and nothing is done. If non natives did that they'd all be arrested.
