Damn clever content and interface (if a tad small). It's remarkable how timeless many have turned out to be.

Great find, Subby. I remember some of those Nixon ones from the early 70s. The Fold-Ins were always the best part of MAD.

Very nice, this should fill some lazy Sunday time. Thanks, submitter.

Nabb1 [TotalFark] 2008-03-30 11:58:28 AM
Oddly none from the 1980's when I bought most of my MAD Magazines. Still, nice find, submitter.

Love this. I have such fond memories of MAD. The fold out chief among them.

I bought my little sis a subscription for Christmas. She's 16, perfect age for it. And guess what? No more back cover fold outs. Booooo.

CrazylilRikki 2008-03-30 12:11:37 PM
That was fun.

+1 subby

Fold in. Just working on that first cup of coffee now.

Awesome.

A non-total-Fark +1 from me, subby. Take a bow.

That last one, from March 2008, had me cheering. Al Jaffee's still got it.

KelvinTheClown 2008-03-30 12:15:18 PM
And I just noticed Al Jaffee's up for Cartoonist of the Year this year. I hope he wins.

Anybody notice the interesting parallel of the subject of the first fold-in and the current Democratic presidential battle?

Spooky.

Sergio Aroganes (sp?), Al Jaffee, and Don Martin were the best things about Mad magazine.

Spider Dijon 2008-03-30 12:20:24 PM
Thankyou Subby!

A nice reminder that Mad is also smart.

KelvinTheClown: Al Jaffee's still got it.

Cheapness in not having totalfark is not a crime, and here a THIS from somebody who similarly prefers.

/did it work?

Gangway Fathead 2008-03-30 12:24:01 PM
I didn't know they made a magazine out of MAD Tv!!

Good link. Çool.

Rodeodoc 2008-03-30 12:29:04 PM
Jaffee proves that great humor is timeless. The October 72 fold in for the win.

Thanks for the memories, subby.

semiotix 2008-03-30 12:31:45 PM
I can usually do the Monday or Tuesday fold-ins, maybe a Wednesday if I use pencil... but anything later in the week and I have to cheat to finish.

/unclear on the concept
//blech

anchee: And guess what? No more back cover fold outs. Booooo.

Did they move them to another page? TFA has one from this month, and I clearly remember seeing them on the back page from an issue I read a few years ago.

When I was in highschool, a friend had a National Lampoon, and I asked what it was. He said remember when you gratuated from Mad to Playboy?
Yeah, I said.
Well, this is what you graduate from Playboy to.
He was right on the money, too.
/family vacation was a short story originally.
Jaffee deserves a lifeetime achivement award, BTW, not cortoonist of the year.

Used to have boxes of these when I was 8, as far back as '62. Thanks for the memories subby!

Hey, anyone remember that old Spy vs Spy game for NES?

You owe me for a broken flat screen monitor when I tried to fold it.

apteryx 2008-03-30 12:57:00 PM
Is it just me, or has MAD gone downhill with Al Gaines? Now they have advertising, and much of the content is just poor humor, lacking the social satire that made it funny.

The Flexecutioner 2008-03-30 01:03:53 PM
EXCELLENT link! that was a really cool retrospective. and the 2008 Spears fold in showed me he hasn't lost a step. excellent.

SockMonkeyHolocaust 2008-03-30 01:04:09 PM
Stuff like this, chicks with dicks porn and entertainment derived from vandalizing wikipedia are the only reason why the internet should exist and no greater importance should ever be placed on it from here forward.

Made my weekend. Thanks, subby! +1

hosalabad 2008-03-30 01:09:08 PM
My best Al Jaffee memory was a letter written in to Mad.

"Thank you for telling me how to pronounce Al Jaffee's last name. One last question, how do I pronounce his first name?"

Read MAD all through the 80s when I was a kid, so many great laughs.

brightestfell [TotalFark] 2008-03-30 01:11:26 PM
I have the absolutely mad dvd with all the issues on it up thru Dec 2005 . The classics never die.

Kyosuke [TotalFark] 2008-03-30 01:17:12 PM
As someone old enough to have folded many of those back when they were paper, I have to say: Greatest implementation of Flash EVAR!

Unfortunately the current version of MAD sucks. I too grew up with MAD from the early 80's to the early 90's and loved it. Now it is slick-paper and full of advertisements. Blech!

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2008-03-30 01:23:55 PM
Damn.

My house got crushed by a tree in a storm a few years ago. All things considered, though, I came out of it pretty well. But one of the worst things I lost was about 3 years worth of late '60's Mad Magazines. Completely waterlogged... basically Mad soup. I did, at least, have my '68 vintage "Alfred E. Newman for president" poster in a different part of the house, so it was okay.

I still had a copy of that until last year when I sold off all my NES wares. There was nothing like over-saturating every item in the game with your traps, then to trigger one of your own by accident. Or you could just corner yourself into a room with traps on all sides and let your friend or CPU weed them out for you.
Fond memories indeed.

How old must Jaffee and the other few remaining old guard be? GREAT post. I wonder if a vintage Mad is worth more if the fold-in hasn't been folded. I leared to read reading Mad. And to speel, too! It did prove to be a gateway magazine to National Lampoon, however.

Dumski 2008-03-30 02:06:54 PM
Wonderful subby! Many memories there. Distinctly remember the sports ones from the 60's. Mad was a great magazine.

I'll be in my den folding my magazine covers.

I love how biased the NY Times is...only one fold-in that's not anti-Republican, and their verbiage is simple..."Whitewater went on for so many years" or something like that.

Is there any doubt anymore, even among liberals?
