Wow... ABC News seems to be heading south in a hurry - they seem to be going for the perfect combination of (a) the bias of CBS News under Dan Rather, (b) the gravitas of CNN Headline News, and (c) the credibility of Fox News.

They seem to issue story after story either meant to "raise controversy" such as claiming over and over that Hillary is still a viable candidate. Pretty pathetic.

FTA: and a weak stock market leading to a genuine depression with 30 to 35 percent unemployment

The unemployment rate during the early 1930's was about 22 percent at it's lowest nadir, meaning this recession would be THAT much worse. I find this very hard to believe to say the least.

Headlines Guaranteed to get clicks there's probably a list somewhere, and right after Global Warming would probably come Depression. Hillary and Obama are good, but Bush is droppin fast, and Saddam's no good any more, and even the History Channel's had to cut back on the Hitler.

Well submitter, there was a federal report that came out about 5 years ago claiming there was a high probability of an economic depression within 10 years. Of course it was dismissed because of the economic prosperity we were experiencing at the time.

But hey, we all know the government is a bunch of lunatic alarmists and the only people who know how the economy works are the those posting comments on TFark.com.

Hey, Freeper, we are heading into a recession thanks to Saint George. Learn some economics. When you dump trillions of dollars of your own country's money into a shiathole with no return, you cause a recession. You keep doing it, combined with a lack of caring about rising fuel costs, you get a depression.

Cinletharwi 2008-03-30 01:32:23 PM
Someone should look up the definition of recession.

Don't forget that we've got Congress giving each other earmarks and wall street takes every advantage they can to steal as much money as they can while exporting jobs overseas and waving the flag the entire time.

In the middle of all this, people are talking about giving away free health care, nobody is addressing the impact of illegal immigration on wages and we're ignoring the cost of our antiquated intellectual property laws on technological development.

Basically, we're boned. just wait'll the baby boomers crash the social security system....then it's shotgun and canned goods time.

Find me an example of a time when a major, developed power substantially devolved into an anomic, anarchic state because of some catastrophe. It didn't happen during the Civil War. It didn't happen during the Great Depression. It didn't happen during the stagflation and fuel shortages of the 1970s. It didn't happen during the Battle of Britain.

The only thing I can think of that is even halfway close to what you're losing sleep over is the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. However, the immediate aftermath of a massive natural disaster isn't what you're talking about...

A depression is a possibility, but only because there is no clear defining aspect of recession past 'it's longer and more severe'. I don't think it will happen though, but you never know...I thought 2001 was a lot worse than this.

THIS.

Only caveat here is that there's a substantial portion of the American population who WANT this to happen, so they can "rise up" and reshape America in the image they want. It's their hope to have an excuse to go out and kill commies/christians/darkies/whities/phaegs/richies/breeders/sluts/whathaveyou and then make that Communist/Christian/White/Aztlan/adinfinitumadnauseum Utopia they think this nation should be before those people screwed it up.

In neither of those examples did the entire system fall apart. Nor had the government promised an entire generation a savings plan and a retirement check that isn't coming.

The only thing I can think of that is even halfway close to what you're losing sleep over is the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. However, the immediate aftermath of a massive natural disaster isn't what you're talking about...

We're not in danger of a recession, much less a depression yet. Both are defined by the length of time the economy shrinks; America's economy is still growing, just very very very slowly.

Not at all. The only way that would happen is if the unemployment rate were over 20% and the government refused to dole out assistance to them. They would have no other choice but to turn to crime just to eat. That, in the larger scale, would take us to that point.

I agree, but does New Orleans during Katrina count?

firefly212 2008-03-30 02:10:40 PM
I think we're headed for some very rough patches ahead... since the end of the last great depression, Americans have been living above their means... now the problem is that we can't simply live at our means, we need to service the debts they built up. The employment and manufacturing metrics are useless... I mean, if you go from a skilled labor position making 70k a year to being a burger flipper 20 hours a week... the Department of Labor considers you employed... there's not alot of good data out there on underemployment... people who were forced to trade in f/t jobs for p/t jobs and the like. I lost pretty much all respect for the manufacturing metric when they decided that fast food service was a form of manufacturing. Frankly, we've redefined the metrics so much over the last 10 years that, speaking purely in terms of those metrics... a good economy is inevitable.

There's an entire American sub-culture of alone-too-much-to-be-healthy man children that take their anxieties and boredom and fashion elaborate scenarios of heroic strife that addresses their feeling of inadequacy. I really think they want something extreme and horrible to happen.

Is that the 'official' definition? I know a recession is two consecutive quarters; I wasn't sure where the distinction is made between the two,
