A friend's wife is a part time nurse that visits people at their homes. She makes a mint.

There's one paragraph that's telling in the story:

Sheriff's department spokeswoman Eileen Hirst said the department should have 868 staff members but was down 116 employees last year, which meant the department had dozens of overtime shifts to fill every day - and the senior deputies agreed to fill them.

Theyre missing almost 15% of their require staff and, not surprisingly, have minimum staffing requirements - big surprise that people willing to work those extra hours are making bank - they probably worked 3500+ hours that year.

Guess what happens where my wife works (nurse) and they dont have the minimum staff - they try agency nurses ($50+/hr) but if they cant find any they tell whoever is there to STFU and get to work - 2 nurses and no aides for 24 people - don't be surprised if you dont see your nurse for a few hours at a time.

Tomosauruswrecks 2008-03-30 10:12:43 AM
On the bright side, they aren't overspending on benefits (less employees = less benefit plans).

Rustem 2008-03-30 10:13:45 AM
So what? The nurse guy is doing real work. If the mayor was being a mayor as much as the nurse was being a nurse, SF might actually shape up.

the police officers in my city are incredibly under-staffed and are always working crazy overtime.
i run a restaurant (the "lawyergirl" name stems from college) in which we give discounts to police/fire/EMS, etc and recently had to decrease the discount because of all the police officers who would camp out for hours, talking and eating.
i'm actually a huge fan of most of the men and women who come in to eat, but there were a couple of guys who would nitpick over a dollar when half their meal would be free, would read the newspaper in the restaurant for two hours, tip low on the discount, and then one guy in particular would park his car behind the store next to us and read the paper some more for the next hour or two.
I guess they have to be ready in case of an emergency, and so our guys worked overtime hours while doing a large amount of nothing.

It's silly to compare an elected official someone who is in position of power and is probably corrupt and has a little black book of high priced call girls to a hourly worker.

A Teacher actually puts in very few hours actually Teaching.

They picked their career they were not forced into it. Not to mention the fact that there are more bad Government School Teachers that are protected by Unions in this country then there are good ones.

I personally work 70 to 80 hours a week on two jobs I have no sympathy for teachers at all. Oh and my wife works three jobs.

Which idiots are those. The ones that need a MOB/UNION to negotiate a contract for them or the people that actually have the ability to do it for themselves.

Regardless of the rest of your post, I don't really care.

But come on, you're making it sound like some people are forced into certain careers? While there is certainly a limit on the types of jobs some people can have, the implication you're making is that some are forced into careers. That's silly.

Since when are nurses city workers? The grammar in this headline confuses me.

omnimancer28 2008-03-30 10:32:08 AM
Chiefsfaninkc, do you get PAYED for those 70-80 hours you put in on two jobs? I am on campus, in my classroom from 7am to 5pm every day. All but ONE hour is "actual hours teaching" where I have students with me. Additionally, I spend no less than two hours daily on lesson prep, lab prep, and mandatory training. Out of this 60 hours per week, I get payed for 33.3 hours.

If you think teaching is an easy job, tell your boss to only pay you for half of the hours you work. Then volunteer to spend more than a few hundred dollars a year on supplies and training to do the job. Hopefully that will help you appreciate how "easy" it is to be a teacher.

Dark Overlord 2008-03-30 10:32:41 AM
Most government workers are there because they cannot do what is necessary in private sector. Most are also overpaid and useless. This article lists jobs that were direct negotiations with the city and unions and, of course the union personnel are make bank while they can.

Remember this as you renew your various government-mandated certificates and are given poor service and surly demeanors.

wydok 2008-03-30 10:32:59 AM
Now that I RTFA, I guess the city does have it's own nurses. Nevermind.

Yeah well my wife works ten jobs plus I make her live in a cardboard box. I mean while we're competing here.

Typhoid 2008-03-30 10:34:20 AM
Teachers are lazy overpaid sods. After working in schools as a technician for 6 years, I now have nothing but contempt for them. They are salaried, work only 9 months out of the year, and if they put in a 6 hour day they are considered to be overachievers.

I would come in on my day off because they'd demand something, then get screamed at because I didn't show them enough "respect." From what I could tell, the only way I could have been nicer was to add, "Yes sir" to every sentence.

Thanks to Floridians cutting their property taxes by 250$ a year, my police department has basically cut out all the OT from the budget.
So now they are understaffed and cant afford to pay people to fill shifts or details needed per minimum staffing.

omnimancer28 2008-03-30 10:38:07 AM
I am sorry that you worked in a bad district Typhoid, but it is hardly a reason to generalize against all teachers. In my school, and teacher working less than 9-10 hours a day is considered a slacker. Of course, we also do not get 3 months off a year. We get one month "off" during the students' summer break. And by "off", I mean we do not get payed and are hoping the school renews our contract for September.

Since it's so easy to make so much money with no effort, of course.

You are being paid for every hour you work it is called a Salary. So you have two choices shut up and do what you are paid or find a different job.

"a teacher", before someone calls me on it. 11am and no sleep the night before does not exactly make it fun to argue about how lazy and useless your profession is.

If the nurse in the headline is working overtime hours, she's not "part time". And no doubt earns every dollar.

Teaching is just as hard or as easy as any other job. If whining teachers don't like the work they can find other jobs. That is one of the Great Things about the US (Well at least for now) if you don't like your job you can find a different one.

I do perform the job I am paid to do. I just find it funny that you think we are pampered by our Union when I make 32,000 a year and put in 60+ hour work weeks.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2008-03-30 10:42:57 AM
Police get lots of overtime in Massachusetts, though due to budget problems there is a move to take away one of the perks -- any time somebody works in the road he has to pay a police officer for a minimum four hour shift to watch. Six figure income is common and some make more than the governor.

Never said you were pampered by the UNION I said you are taken advantage of by the UNION. The UNION takes your money and gives you nothing back that you could not negotiate for yourself.

UNIONS are concerned for the UNION not the Children.

So then you have the freedom to quit biatching about how sweet teaching is and how horrible it is that you have to work so much, right? Because you can leave those jobs any time you want, and get something better (like teaching!)

Right?

It's about time for what? A city so drastically understaffed that an employee winds up making triple their wages in overtime? I'm sure that a drastically overworked nurse isn't any more likely to make mistakes or provide less-than-stellar treatment, right?

Yeah, thank heavens that's finally happening.
