Peer pressure, it's a hell of a drug.

I'm in favor of anything that gets college-aged girls to take off their clothes.

School work has driven them to drink.

After years of waging the war on drugs - begun back in the '60s when students started screwing around with dope - advertisers, breweries, distilleries and the like have finally, once again, made hooch the obliterative aid of choice.

Hard drugs have moved to the ghetto and collegiates, execs and housewives have all copped to booze as the drug of choice.

However: None of the war on drugs has made a dent because people will, as one comedian stated, "If every other form of drug has been made unavailable, still spin around on the lawn until they fall down and see God".

I think the question is, why does everybody in the Western world who can lift a glass or a pipe seem so hell bent of shutting off their brains at any given chance? Between hooch, dope and drug companies flogging a new pill, every week - some of which have side-effects that are worse than the symptoms - perhaps the society we've created is so toxic that the only way to deal with it is to take different toxins in the effort to feel happy. That's farked up. In moderation, alcohol is good for you. Good for your heart, cleans out your pipes, relaxes you... but like any poison, too much will damage you. Maybe we already work and we just keep screwing around with the environment we work well in with little concern as to what hoops we have to put ourselves through to survive it.

Ah yes, begin the "Not my fault" mantra as soon as possible.
It takes a coward to drink to excess, then blame others.

FTA "Others, from Brunel University, will argue that the 'inaccurate portrayal' of students as drunk and irresponsible should be rectified."

No, that is pretty much how I remember college, and it really had nothing to do with pub crawls or peer pressure.

Well if British University students have to drink until they're good looking enough to fark eachother then let them do it.

/didn't rtfa

Is it the same group of students doing the pub crawls and the complaining? I doubt it.

It is pretty ridiculous to be having a go at companies that offer low price drinks. No-one is obligated to buy them. If they want to address irresponsibility with regard to alcohol, the first place to look is at the people who are drinking.

/Drank a lot at uni.
//My choice, no-one forced me to do it

That said, the stereotype that uni is primarily three or more years of drinking is bad, in that it can diminish the importance of qualifications gained, particularly in the opinions of some potential employers.

cheap beer nights.... and the students complain?

obviously, this isn't happening in the USA.

Maybe I'm just an old man who shouldn't be in college, but I really hate college parties. While the female presence is nice, it's ruined by them shouting 'woohoo' and posing for camera phone pictures every few minutes. That, and when they get drunk they start crying over stupid shiat. These shenanigans occur at a much lower rate among 20 somethings, which is good.

That and I really hate natty light.

Oh let the blame carousel start!!!

That should have an obvious tag because it's college...you drink. That is college for a lot of people I know. And, then i stand back and take pictures of their stupid shiat like sharpies on bodies, kegstands, girl on girl action, cake fight, girls acting like whores and many many more. Luckily, I graduate in june and then i can upgrade to civilization.

Around here they don't change much when they leave school and get a job.

Personally, from the moment Fresher's week started in my first undergrad year until now, I feel like the fact that I don't drink makes me the odd one out, I can imagine how pressured some of the more socially needy UGs would feel they don't have a choice.

doglover [TotalFark] 2008-03-30 10:33:10 AM
I felt no pressure to drink in college, despite going to a party school.

Now, having a bad relationship or a shiatty job... there's some pressure.

Or completely insane room-mates, which is common for students too. That's what drove me to drink in my early twenties. No stress like not wanting to be at home stress.

I'm at uni now. Sometimes we drink. Often, when we do, we get very, very drunk. We don't do any of the stupid things mentioned in the article, we just get quite drunk, talk, and sometimes go dancing.

The rest of the time, we work. We work ourselves to exhaustion, and when it is over it's nice to meet and unwind with several drinks.

All of this is perfectly fine. I find the stereotype of the lazy, perpeptually drunk student completely insulting.

limeyfellow 2008-03-30 10:53:04 AM
Pressure to drink? Not really. In the pub way too often? probrobly. £1 a pint and 80 pence a shot of spirits at the student bar. I'm there. The good old days I guess, but saying you are pressured into drinking means the people who are saying it are friggin morons who should get a backbone and find something else to do. It not like most universities don't have hundreds of clubs and a whole city of resources.

PredDawg8 2008-03-30 10:53:20 AM
Miss Cellania: Dang! I came in here sure it was about Kentucky.

I had a coworker who was not into sports at all. He once sent me a link to a story about the University of Kansas with the subject "U of K".

I told him, "Actually, the University of Kentucky is UK. The University of Kansas is KU. If you watched sports, you would know these things."

That said, I wasn't confused. "Students in the UK" obviously means in the United Kingdom. "Students at UK" would mean in Lexington.

dipdunk 2008-03-30 11:05:47 AM
At first I thought the article was about Lexington too. Given that so many counties in KY are dry, I would not have been overly surprised if someone had used the title line as an excuse should fundie parents ask why the precious little snowflake would drink.

/nothing quite like a cold ale-8 though

tarquinrainbowtrout 2008-03-30 11:22:36 AM
the NUS is a joke, they claim to represent students but they have no power and now charge for any benefits students get

the drinking culture is pretty heavy but id say most of my friends want to do it, they like clubbing - i don't and only did bar crawls when i was a fresher, much happier sat in the bar

and drinks should be cheap - that's not irresponsible, i can't afford a thing at home

University students in the UK say they are forced, FORCED, to drink alcohol

Umm subby, the word "force" doesn't appear in the article. Neither does "threat"

I did find "peer pressure". Subby got social issues?

I hate the NUS. They're a bunch of pointless whingers. They do more damage to the student stereotype than any amount of binge drinking will do.

The university I went to had a vote on whether we should disassociate ourselves from the NUS. Sadly, the HMV discount was enough to sway most people into voting to keep them. :(

Unfortunately our Student ID cards were merged with the NUS cards a while back so you have no choice but to pay for membership if you want to use the university services.
Our NUS are annoying little pricks who think that bugging the life out of us is acceptable. Then again its a small price to pay for the bar down by the river. It's quiet enough to avoid the binge drinking mob so its rather 'classy'
