My favorite Tull album is Thick As A Brick. Still have the vinyl copy at home.

Is the heckler at the beginning shouting "PLAY AQUALUNG!"?

Most modern records sound like they only have one song on them anyway, but has there been another great rock album since Thick that featured just one long track?

/Difficulty: live bootlegs of Darkstar don't count

That would be interesting, considering Aqualung was not released until 1971, and this show is either 1970 or 1969 depending on which date is correct.

Great clip!

My favorite Tull period. Nobody believes me when I say that the first two Jethro records are heavy blues rock almost similar to Black Sabbath's first recordings.(Listen to "Warning" and "Wicked World" from first Sabbath record--sounds a lot like this)

Their third record is my favorite of ALL Tull records (Benefit)

According to an article at wikipedia,Ian Anderson strongly resented Aqualung being called a "concept" record and didn't like being categorized as a "prog" band. It is then suggested that he deliberately intended Thick as a Brick as a parody of the art-rock genre and he intentionally made it over the top and pretentious as a kind of joke.

Anyway,joke or not--great record--great band.

wow... thanks subby!
His singing is a lot different here than in just a few years in the future.... he sings almost like a real bluesman here... totally different tone and phrasing, etc. etc, than Aqualung or Thick as a Brick....

I still think their best albums are the "trilogy"...
"Aqualung", "Thick as a Brick" and "A Passion Play"

Yes... I actually like the passion play....
hopefully there's other farkers or tull fans out there who like it as well.... sometimes i think it's even stronger song-quality wise than "Thick" in places... especially the second side of "passion"...
i heard it got "panned" by almost every music critic when it was released... but still went to #1 or #2 anyway....

"Oh do stop being silly"

I think the heckler just got told in British.

Nice find subby!

Tull was may favorite band back in high school. When "Too old for rock and roll..." had just come out. Stand Up and Benefit are high on my list of best ever.

/oh yeah, off my lawn...
// Unfortunately didn't see them till the '80's. Was still a decent show.

Can I stand on your lawn if I bring Minstrel in the Gallery?

This came out in 1971, but is worth mentioning. Two tracks, 52 minutes long. Closest I could find to one long track.

/Nice one. I've got a black cat named Miles (and another named Dizzy - and a dog that answers to Duke, too).

I saw them in Montreal on the tour for Passion Play. Excellent show that was!
I've never enjoyed it as much as other Tull albums but it's still pretty damn good.

Funny, I agree about their best being the trilogy, but for me the trilogy is Stand Up, Benefit, and Aqualung. I've never been fond of Thick as a Brick, for some reason.

LCD Soundsystem technically has one. The name of the song is the length, something like 45:37 or something, I'm too lazy to google it.

From_The_Year_2000: I enjoyed about 11:26 of that one, but don't remember the actual running time either.

the voices in your head: Dopesmoker!

craigdamage 2008-03-30 09:39:58 PM
Dopesmoker (a.k.a. Jerusalem) is a goddamned masterpiece!

They do owe an awful lot to the MELVINS "Lysol" record.

Playing real slow like that is actually more difficult than faster with lots of complex changes.

However, notice on Dopesmoker how punishingly slow the de-tuned guitar and bass are but the drums are often at a more rapid metre or tempo.(on top of the rhythm)

Actually, I've heard it said / read of either or both those groups of albums as trilogy's....
so we're both right... lol
ie. Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung.
Aqualung, Thick, Passion.

I say, I have heard virtually nothing [maybe one or two songs] from Benefit, nothing from "Stand Up" [hangs head in shame] I should investigate those albums...
[Tull fan since 1999].

I wish he still sounded like this. His music is still amazing, but he's gone soft. =(

No Frickin' Way!! That's wicked awesome!! :-D
I rememeber reading that they played all of Thick as a Brick, all of the Passion Play, and most of Aqualung, as a set list for that tour...
[what a setlist!!]
do you have any memories of that concert [or others?] to share with us Tull-liking Farkers?

I punched a hole in my apartment wall when they won best heavy metal band at the grammies. We put a frame around it and called it the Tull Hole. A farking flute? Give me a break.

All I remember was somewhere in the middle of the show they dropped a screen down on stage and showed a film. And of course, lo and behold, here it is: The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles. Sorry I don't have any great specific memories of the show other than they were incredible but this was back in my partying youth and it's tough looking back to 1973 (senior year!) through that fog.

Interesting point. I believe Tony Iommi did play guitar briefly with Tull...

That is Tony (in white hat) in this performance from the Stone's 1968 Rock and Roll Circus movie.
