Ms Rice is hoping significant progress can be achieved before President George W Bush's visit to the region in May.

He has expressed confidence in a framework peace agreement being reached before he leaves office in January.

However, few Israelis or Palestinians share his optimism, our correspondent says.

Sigh...I'm so tired of having a president who is completely out of touch in every way. This guy is seriously living in his own little world, where we're not in a recession, where Iraq is just turning a corner from the last throes, where Iran is working with the Al Qaeda, and where the Israelis and Palestinians are realy really close to finding peace thanks to US intervention.

I think Rice has good intentions with this push, but simply not the time left in office nor the kind of backing from her boss that she'd need to actually bring significant progress.

To defeat HAMAS and the terrorists, you have to offer peaceful Palestinians a reasonable alternative to the inherent violence of the 40+ year illegal occupation and forced colonization of their homeland. Ms. Rice may want to, but she doesn't have the "political capital" necessary to make that happen.

/has actually gained some respect for her through all this

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said she expects Israel to take "meaningful" steps to ease Palestinians' lives in the West Bank.

I bet they really mean it this time!

/Psst, actually do what ever the fark you want...

The idea of "defeating Hamas" probably has to go. She should be focusing on is de-escalation. Maybe the next president can sort out the mess.
