It's cool, and funky, and I couldn't do it, but I'm still partial to K.T. Tunstall's "Black Horse & the Cherry Tree" performance on that Jools Holland show. Maybe cuz I'd never seen it done before. (YouTube usually takes this vid down, it's temporarily back up):

Other factors in her favor:
1) Original composition
2) She may pose nude^, and I'd be more willing to see that than see him pose nude

I saw KT live in Indy and even with the band she used the loop pedal for the backing vocals. She used a line about not doing any lip synching or using tapes.

She's a heck of a performer - cute too.

I was reminded of that, the original AWB show I saw, and seeing K.T. do that live, on Church Street in Burlington, Vermont last year, for free.
I thought my coworker was going to kidnap her and have her way with her, is why I attended.
She stood in the same spot I wow crowds on and wowed me.

Reminds me of the music that would play in the background of Assault Rigs on the PS1.

The A riff kinda reminds me of the mario theme.

Keller Williams has been doing this for almost ten years. He had a bass and a guitar and he'd swing one onto his back and use the other, and do all the beatbox stuff with his mouth... biatchin.

/but this video is cool nevertheless.

Drummer, I had visions of going directly home and doing that very thing with my DL-4...

Very creative. I think that's going in the repertoire.

That was far better than I thought it would be. Very cool.

If kids today would listen to more AWB, they wouldn't go around starting as many wars.

The genius of AWB, same for Captain Beefheart, was the drums.

My friend Mark (new window) has been doing this for years on guitar and Chapman Stick. Also a great guy to know if you're curious about the Continuum Fingerboard (new window).

I had the good fortune of working with Mark and Lippold for several years when I was an engineer for NovaNET. If you dig what they're doing, be sure to tell them so.

I'm generally either disgusted or enraged by any muso "look what I can do" stuff, but this was actually great. I approve.

/must be the 4-string fretted bass
//cackhanded wank-offs always have more strings and/or no frets

both awesome

MikoSquiz: Fretless are fantastic, though they would I imagine require quite a bit more skill. No fret buzz = awesome .. I'd find some other way to mark the instrument so that finger position is easily visible though. (maybe use fret markings, rather than raised pieces, to denote the right area)

I've never seen a cello with frets, and that's the forefather of the electric bass.

I've always wanted to play one of those, but ahve never had the opportunity.

I have a beautiful fretless Fender Jazz that started its life as an American Deluxe Jazz and then HG Thor (new window) got his hands on it. It weighs about the same as my Strat and it's a joy to play. I have LaBella tapewound strings on it at the moment and it sounds as good as it plays.

This is good because it is NOT masturbatory.
He ain't wankn' on the fretboard.
He is accomplishing a great funky classic with aid of a very well used looping device.

Very good tone too.

The ability to play legato is nice enough, but no frets or even fret markings is a huge pain in the ass when playing such a low-pitched instrument.

Also, the string resonating against the neck where you're holding it down makes that "pwoarrrrn" sound that really makes my teeth grate.

ekdike04, really? cello is the forefather of electric bass?
cellos are tuned in 5ths...basses are tuned in 4ths. the upright double bass is the forefather of the electric bass... that's why they are both called basses.

Robert Fripp and Brian Eno called, and they want their Frippertronics back.

I was doing this with analog tape strung between two reel-to-reels and a monophonic Moog Satellite Synth touring coffeehouses in the latter 70s.

Still, this guy was good. A lot like what Jaco did when he opened for Metheney in the 80s.

The hammer on's with your right hand were weak and annoying to listen to. The rest was just ok.

Wrong... the forefather of the electric bass is : the acoustic bass. Also known as string bass, bass viol, double bass, contrabass, etc. A cello is a cello, not a bass.

I had that on *cough* cassette for years. Watched it happen and taped it in case it was important. Many years later while studying for a test, listening to "Heavenly Music Corporation," the setup dawned on me and I already owned the proper equipment. Had to set it up right then.

/Anything to not study...
