That'll make it harder to, like, bone their girlfriends. They'll just, like, say "No way."

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say I'll bet pressure from the US has absolutely nothing to do with this.

Nothing, I tell you.

Canadian Canuck [TotalFark] 2008-03-29 09:59:54 PM
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Sorry.

AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Good luck with that.

Bob Down 2008-03-29 10:01:30 PM
Australia is considering this as well. It should stop 14yo's from drinking, don't you think?

UNLIKELY

flucto [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-03-29 10:03:28 PM
It's hardly asinine. There's a reason the US did it, even in the face of ginormous pressure and, no, it wasn't puritanical nutbags.

MorningBreath [TotalFark] 2008-03-29 10:03:32 PM
why should they be allowed to drink at 18, when every other state is 21?

strangeguitar: That'll make it harder to, like, bone their girlfriends. They'll just, like, say "No way, eh."

Forgot something.

I might care if I wasn't 40

Stompn_Tom [TotalFark] 2008-03-29 10:15:42 PM
If you can go a die for your country you should be able to drink.

vudukungfu 2008-03-29 10:16:46 PM
No how am I supposed to drive to Montreal and find drunken 16 year old girls with fake IDs in Motel rooms?

mikemoto [TotalFark] 2008-03-29 10:28:08 PM
So, now Canadian soldiers can like their US counterparts, die for their country but not legally drink a beer. This is nuts, eh.

Shenanigans.

CANADA is doing no such thing.

One Board of Health from a hard-drinking university town is making noises about it.

Drinking ages in Canada are determined by the province.

wildrufus [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-03-29 11:18:54 PM
They should lower the drinking age, I think.

Think of all the fun to be had at those Canadian bat-mitzvahs!!

Jeff Paine 2008-03-29 11:27:16 PM
What the hell is wrong with Canada? First they raise the age of consent from 14 to 16, now they might raise the drinking age from 19 to 21.

towatchoverme 2008-03-29 11:29:01 PM
An Ontario health board is calling on the provincial government to raise the legal drinking age ... The Middlesex-London Health Unit voted this week in favour of the resolution ...

One health board.

CALLING on the PROVINCIAL government.

You couldn't fail more on the failingest day of your life with an electrified failing machine, failmitter.

Because a bunch of idiots ruin it for the rest of sane, clear thinking 18 year olds, by acting like...
...BWAHAHAH. Sorry, couldn't keep a straight face.

good, now they suffer like i suffer

I've heard of anal and oral, but what's this middle sex people keep talking about?

3ntropy 2008-03-29 11:31:19 PM
boobies?

knucklebreather 2008-03-29 11:32:15 PM
I thought Washington D.C. would threaten withhold interstate funds to force individual states to raise their drinking ages to 21. What gives?

Bear Farker 2008-03-29 11:32:22 PM
From TFA: "An Ontario health board is calling on the provincial government to raise the legal drinking age to 21 from 19, saying that teenagers are most at risk of alcohol-related death or injury.

This just in: Ontario does not make up all of Canada. It's rumoured there are other provinces with their own Provencial laws. News outlets will continue to alert the public with round the clock coverage of this startling development.

I'm a 20 year old who is planning a party weekend in Canada, so I'm really getting a kick out of this.

/An uptight town ~= to the province

Benalto 2008-03-29 11:33:47 PM
Ah, bear farker, people from Ontario think they ARE Canada (said the Albertan).

Strami 2008-03-29 11:34:07 PM
First of all, Ontario ≠ Canada. I happen to live in Ontario, and the drinking age of 19 does not stop 16yr olds from drinking anyways... and then there's always Montreal. Ah Montreal, Labatt Bleu-Dry in a paper bag from the Depaneur for $2.25. Those were the days.

Lexarius 2008-03-29 11:34:16 PM
Alright, I've got this idea to fix the draft age vs. drinking age problem.

You can drink if you join the military, or wait until you're 21. If you drink before you're 21, the only punishment is automatic enlistment (possibly deferred until you're old enough to join the military).

This could either decrease problems with underage drinking, increase enlistment rates, or increase the likelihood of cops planting fake evidence to get rid of annoying teens. Any way you slice it, politicians would probably like it.

Whoops, I didn't mean to steal MorningBreath's troll line. My bad.

sugahboy 2008-03-29 11:35:35 PM
FTA:he said the latest statistics from 2001 show that of the 1,600 young people who died from injury per year nationally, 45 per cent were by motor-vehicle crashes and 40 per cent of that was a result of drinking and drinking.

Looks like they've been tipping back a few at the ol' Globe and Mail offices too...

gravespinner 2008-03-29 11:35:54 PM
Ultra vires. Drinking age (if you read the FA) is a provincial authority.

Strami 2008-03-29 11:36:17 PM
I guess I should have refreshed before posting... seems a few people beat me to the punch.

I say lower the drinking age to -5.

sexy-fetus 2008-03-29 11:37:14 PM
Bump everything up to 21. People can hardly be considered "adult" even at 21 these days.

Yeah, but I'd have to be drunk to enlist... maybe Canada's not planning anymore wars.

zamboni 2008-03-29 11:42:13 PM
Hey, let's raise the drinking age to 55, and lower the speed limit to 21! that'll save lots of lives! Oh, I guess that will affect a larger bloc of voters, so that won't happen. Don't want to upset the demographic that gets you elected, eh? fark everyone else!

Barakku [TotalFark] 2008-03-29 11:43:19 PM

Exactly.

If anything, people are dumber at 21 now than they were 20 years ago.
