Holy shiat! Florida got something right! Daylight savings time is useless. All it does is fark with your sleep twice a year.

burndtdan 2008-03-29 06:33:54 PM
But Sen. Jim King doesn't approve of nixing daylight saving time. Without it, he reasoned, the Sunshine State would be without some of its precious daylight.

he's right. the sun will just stop shining in protest.

Daylight savings time is retarded. The sooner we're rid of it, the better.

sarcastrophe 2008-03-29 07:43:43 PM
Speaking of which, tonight is the old daylight saving time switch. All of my unimportant servers which I didn't bother to patch will have the correct time again starting tomorrow.

Hooray! Soon, we'll have a whole week of xST. Did it ever occur to anyone that we could just change the timezone lines and be rid of DST? We have more xDT than xST these days anyway.

Which means, of course, they will most likely keep the law.

I agree. It wasn't until I lived in AZ that I realized what a bunch of BS daylight savings time really is. I have thought about moving back but the only place I really like there is Flagstaff and housing is soooo expensive there, at least compared to where I live now.

This really deserved a HERO tag.

This deserves an inverse Florida tag.

I'm not a chicken, I don't need the government f*cking with my internal clock to make me "more productive."

In 200 years, DST is one of those things that humans will be mocking as an idiotic waste of time.

It's great up here in the North East, at least in the late spring & summer. Otherwise, we'd have sunrise at about 4:20AM in June.

dbirchall [TotalFark] 2008-03-29 08:37:13 PM
The closer to the equator you are, the less point there is to DST. The length of your day, and the times of sunrise and sunset, just don't vary enough over the course of the year to make it worth considering.

This might have something to do with why we don't do DST here in Hawaii. I'm wary of giving our lawmakers credit for that much smarts, though.

puffy999 [TotalFark] 2008-03-29 08:39:08 PM
I should clarify... I wouldn't mind if Daylight Saving Time was the norm throughout the year. But the spring forward/fall back crap should end.

Estimates are it costs billions of wasted dollars changing the time on various computers and operating systems . Even more than that is lost wages and production from millions of employees forgetting to set their clocks and being late for work.
For me it just messes up my circadian rhythm so I can't sleep right for a while. It's plain stupid and a pain in the arse to me.

I've proposed here and elsewhere that the country be further divided time-zone wise into half-hour increments and let the border states decide which time zone they are in. India is at GMT +5.5 I don't know why we couldn't be. Also, do you think that 6 am is the same on the east coast of Maine as the Western border of Michigan? Cause they're in the same farkING time zone.

DST is a waste of time.

New Hampshire Free Time is where it's at.

As a child, I remember one of the most profound things I ever heard was my friend Jeremy asking where that hour goes every year. It sounds silly but he was actually being pretty philosophical about it. I think he'll make a great spiritual leader for people that smoke a lot of pot someday.

And yet you posted, didn't you?

I think the implication of not being able to care less is ~= you're as calm as you can be considering how important it is to you.

If you *could* care less, well, you're giving a shiat just to be nice, but you could withdraw your concern any time.

im not sure why we need everyone in the country to be late, confused and tired for a few days twice a year.

Or maybe you are just immune to intentional irony. With time and effort, you may learn to recognize it.

dangelder, there's just no hope for you.

You don't get how it works, do you? One of those times they will be bright eyed and bushytailed.

Honestly, you people are so ignorant. Daylight savings was enacted for a reason. The oil companies would love to get rid of it.

And what, pray tell, was that reason and why, if it was a valid reason, is it still relevant? Note, you will be mocked for pretty much any answer you give.

There WAS a valid reason originally. Had to do with farms, IIRC.
Obviously not relevant in the modern era.

You probably recall correctly, but that is not correct. The reason was to conserve energy, but if that ever was a valid reason, it certainly isn't now. It is easy to demonstrate that more energy and other resources are wasted by this idiotic ritual.

Most have no idea how much extra work the Daylight Savings crap tends to be for your friendly neighborhood IT department. It complicates code immensely, plays hell with legacy systems (especially when they go changing by fiat the day that you actually "spring forward" or "fall back"), and causes all sorts of audit log discrepancies.

Don't even get me started on leap seconds.
