If deer or turkey had opposable thumbs and the ability to make tools, they'd kill you too.

/plus they're tasty, Mr PETA MCPETAson

Good, when the hunting goes away we can watch waves of non-cruel starvation in the winters from non-cruel overpopulation. Should be entertaining.

Wildlife management should be left to random chance and not science.

I haven't hunted or fished for a very long time but I crave elk, venison, pheasant and trout so I love it when my neighbors give me some of their catch or invite me over for a meal.

Psychotropic 2008-03-29 03:13:47 PM
I do try to keep the pain to a minimum when inflicting death on nature's beautiful innocent delicious creatures.

Deer are nothing but big tasty rats. Mild winters, encroaching civilization, and lack of natural predators has caused overpopulation of deer in many areas. Too many deer means less healthy herds that are more likely to spread disease.

When not enough deer are hunted, the government steps in to cull the overpopulation at taxpayer expense. These deer are burned or buried instead of being used as food.

Maybe submitter would like to see more wolves introduced to his neighborhood to naturally take care of the deer population problem.

Okay, I'm not the submitter, and I'm fine with hunting ... but I would be so all over this. Not only would the wolves take care of the Giant Rabbits of Death we have everyfreakingwhere, hopefully they'd take care of the neighbor's yapdog that they leave outside at night, and the neighbor's kids who think 'fake horror movie scream' is a fun outdoor game, and hell while they're at it, the neighbor.

Other things to do like working at slaughterhouses, using forklifts and stun guns to torment the meat.

I've been deer hunting a couple of times, although I never did shoot anything. Or even have an opportunity to take a shot. Turns out there's a lot of sitting on a stump very quietly in deer hunting, which isn't relevant to my interests, so much. Also, I determined that I'm too squeamish. Fortunately, my husband will be able to handle the hunting duties when the Chinese invade or the turrists blow up all of the grocery stores or the asteroid hits.

Ever had grouse cooked in butter and onion over a campfire? Mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm.

Well, we have sent 4000 hunters to their deaths over the last 5 years.

Not as bad as Cheney!

(Seriously, though, I just don't pull the trigger if I ain't gonna eat it. Personal choice.)

The primary problem in deer hunting - as in so many other forms of hunting - is cleaning the damn thing after. Which is why I'm glad I never bagged anything the few seasons I tried for deer - those suckers have a lot of guts to pull out. I didn't have much trouble with cleaning fowl (cleaning a dove takes about thirty seconds), but something the size of a deer ...

And I never understood why fishing was so popular to start with - I can't stand the taste of any freshwater fish but sturgeon, and then only if it's properly smoked, and I have some horseradish to put on it. Bass, trout, catfish ... just don't like.

\Every fall when I was a kid, we'd have a couple hung up to gut and drain in our garage, from my dad and his friends.

I've been hunting and fishing a few times and I think it's too early, too cold (during deer season anyway), too much work, and not enough fun to really enjoy it. If there are fewer hunters then they should extended hunting season and let people take more deer when they hunt.

curmudge 2008-03-29 03:38:52 PM
Highroller48 . . . I just don't pull the trigger if I ain't gonna eat it. . . . that's what I was taught as a kid.

Three rules:

1) Don't point a gun (even a toy) unless you intend to shoot.

2) Always shoot to kill.

3) Unless it is for personal protection, don't shoot it unless you are willing to eat it.

My Step-Dad made me clean, cook and eat a robin I'd killed. Last time I pulled that kind of shiat.

I guess it's so much better to let someone else kill the animals we eat. If you hunt and kill and animal and then eat it, sounds fine to me.

Interest is still there.. being able to put up with spending $40 on a fishing license is what I did away with.

Ho crap I got an unprocessed deer pelt for free of Craigslist. It was freaking disgusting. I made a total mess of it (pops). Mad respect to people who can actually hunt (without using a tank), make a clean kill, clean the animal, eat all the meat, and then process the pelt into something useful.

Fish populations are down. All the places you used to fish from are now condos and private. There are limits on everything you catch. Gas is $3.25 a gallon. You gotta now drive an hour to where there's fish. Gotta have a boat. South Florida and Tampa are sucking north Florida dry. No water for fish. No estuaries for breeding.

Cost me $75 last weekend to catch 2 stingray and one something or other so small I didn't even know I had it, it was just there when I reeled it in.

Repeat above for hunting. Only make that $250 and 2 squirrels, cuz now I need guns, and a 4wd, ....

altinos 2008-03-29 03:48:17 PM
Hunting and fishing can be expensive sports. Americans have less disposable income lately. Most people have to drive a great distance to get to the wilderness to do it.

That and kids are raised on video games and TV, not out in the woods. Fishing and hunting is in the spirit of self reliance, which is more scarce these days.

I have to say, when I'm out fishing on a warm and sunny day with a cooler full of good beer in front of me, and I start to doze...the last thing I want is for a fish to actually go after whatever rusty lure I'm using.

I'm trying to relax, dangit!

I know of a girl (ultra-left-wing-hippy) who denounces hunting, fishing, slaughter-houses....yet she has to have that steak.

I guess in her hippy-land, burgers and steaks grow on trees.

funmonger 2008-03-29 03:50:21 PM
Meat you kill is FrankenPharm-free, better than meat from the death farms. Shooting a deer properly is a blessing to these creatures who otherwise painfully starve to death or are eaten by an animal that doesn't care whether or not it's dead before dinner starts.

No thanks. I'd take the bullet. If only human beings were given such a dignity when they die.

I have no problems if you hunt and eat the food (or give it me), but don't mask your blood lust behind population control. We've killed off the apex predators so we could build a Suburbia we didn't need. Things will eventually balance out.

Don't say you kill to eat and then pose proudly for a photo with your kill. You don't pose with an apple you pick from a tree.

Why hang the horns and antlers? You didn't outsmart a beast by sitting in tree doused with the urine of a female in heat.

If you just admit you like the killing, I'm ok with that. Stop making excuses and cook me that steak.

You had to remind me that walleye season doesn't open till May 1st didn't you. The ice is long gone and the temps are getting closer to go time but I can't eat any of them.

/walleye - best tasting freshwater fish - a little flour, butter and oil is all you need for tasty goodness.

Why the fark does everyone associate anyone who disagrees with animals being harmed with PETA. That's an extreme organisation most people who felt that way would distance themselves from.

You are right. I hunt because I like the thrill of the kill and venison is some of the best meat around. Hunting is legal because of population control. It's performed because it's a fun activity for most.

I think that we should lay mines for them.
