S.O.P. in Chicago...

I used to think Chicago politics were terrible until I moved to PA. PA could teach Chicago a thing or two.

Is Cook County going through one of it's slime bag cycles again? It happens all the time in lousyanna. Things get super corrupt, people clean house, than five years later the house cleaners are super corrupt.

FTA: Circuit Court Judge Stuart Katz found Buckley not guilty this week after prosecutors failed to play a surveillance video and waived their right to deliver opening and main closing statements.

What THE F--K?? I really want to hear the prosecutor's side.

Doggie McNugget: PA could teach Chicago a thing or two.

NJ could teach PA a thing or two too, for a small fee of course, and a job for my friend.

I've lived in Cook County for 31 years. I've never seen any real house cleaning.

Oklahoma has 77 counties. Each county has 3 elected County Commissioners for a total of 231 County Commissioners state wide. During the early 1980's over 200 of Oklahoma's County Commissioners were indicted in federal courts in a massive kickback scandal.

That's how we roll in the south.

I can understand not showing the video. If the facts of what she did are undisputed, the only issue is her intent. Showing the video would have just been a waste of time.

As for the argument, I don't understand that. That was a poor decision. Maybe the prosecutor thought it was too open and shut. Still, the prosecutor should have gotten up and said something short and sweet.

I don't see anything corrupt here on the part of the prosecutor. And not showing the surveillance video wasn't incompetent. But not delivering opening and closing statements was.

You must be unfamiliar with how Chicago operates. Cook County has been going through a "slime bag cycle" since Prohibition.

I've always wondered on the morality of this scaenrio:

Is it okay to take a bribe or what not if you plan to use said bribe to right the other wrongs of the world? Especially if said bribe is a rather large amount.

To give an example, say you catch Bill Gates in some way shape or form doing something illegal like smoking weed. He offers you a million bucks to not snitch. You could use that money to catch real criminals who have done such things as kill people and doing 30 in a 25. Is it right to take the money? The fact that it's illegal aside.

FTA:Buckley has told police she had every intention of returning to the store to pay for the items after going to her car to get a debit card.

And of course, it was absolutely imperative that she load the groceries into her car, instead of leaving the cart in the store while she retrieved her card?

Slimebag Texas politics are of a more pressing concern to me.

Legality is always a matter of practicality in making a decision, not one of morality. You have no moral obligation to obey a law simply because it's the law.

When you fail to give an opening statement, present the evidence, or give a closing statement, then it's clear you've been bought off and have no intention of trying for a guilty verdict.

Yes, that is corrupt.

I'm not really sure what you guys are trying to say. Do you think that random city employees that get busted for some kind of illegal activity should have their party affiliation announced in the article about it? I mean, it'd be one thing if this lady was the mayor, or a political appointment. But she's just an assistant something-or-other employed by the city.

Do you expect news articles to read something like:
"Joe Blow, a DEMOCRAT, was fired from his job with the Department of Public Works for stealing gas from the city garage," or "City accountant Mark Whitehouse, a REPUBLICAN, was placed on unpaid leave after he was charged with fraud, allegedly for embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from the city.

How is that productive? Does the party affiliation of some random jerk who happens to be employed by a municipality matter?

Von Mises 2008-03-28 08:59:10 PM
Security guard Teresa Mitrano was not surprised.

"The judge believed everything I said, but there was reasonable doubt," Mitrano said.

"It bothers me, but I can't get angry or upset. We've had cases worse than this where people have gotten off. If I was new to the field, I'd probably be really pissed. But, I've been doing this for 22 years. Some people go to jail. Some don't. It depends on the judge."

The prosecutor presented evidence, shiat for brains. The prosecutor just didn't present a particluar piece of redundant evidence that would have established only what was established by other witnesses and wasn't even disputed by the defense.

The sole issue in the case was the intent of the defendant. Not whether she engaged in the conduct.

The prosecutor failed to make an argument. Probably because he thought the case was open and shut. Not because he was bought off.

Yeesh.

Working for the city of Chicago in any capacity should be sufficient ground for an indictment.

On a totally unrelated note, I wouldn't characterize someone making $80k as a high-ranking city employee. Maybe that's pre-kickback.

smith5150 2008-03-28 09:14:51 PM
At least the store she stole from actually has the balls to prosecute in the first place. My wife works for a retailer who prosecutes ALL shoplifters and is constantly badgered about the policy (like she has anything to do w/ a corporate directive).

Out of the 100+ retail outlets housed at her upscale, outdoor mall, only two others prosecute. I guess what I'm saying is, steal away people. it's not like anyone's going to do anything about it.

Egregious as this is, it's $130. There must be a hundred worse crimes committed every day in Chicago. I doubt they brought their A-game to this one. I'd rather the prosecutor suited up and helped fill some of these goddamn potholes.
