We know politics. We get politics.

We know you boomers gave us the shaft and we are not happy about it.

baka-san [TotalFark] 2008-03-28 04:21:49 PM
hey, guess what ya little bastards, us older Gen X'rs used to be idealistic also. They are all a bunch of dirty lying farktards, and nothing is ever going to change.

At least some of us graduated public school when they still offered an education, instead of babysitting service.

We know politics. We get politics.

Try reading a few Fark political threads and see if you can hold on to that assertion.

I was born in 1984 (shocking, right?) and I was always told I was a Gen X'er. My parents are both boomers.

Code_Archeologist [TotalFark] 2008-03-28 04:25:04 PM
Do not mistake Gen X apathy for patience in waiting for the Baby Boomers to die. After that happens it will be much easier to get some shiat done.

mediaho 2008-03-28 04:25:04 PM
Since when weren't we Gen-Xers politically involved? I suppose some aren't but most of my peers are.

those born since 1982

that's me!

Crosshair: We know you boomers gave us the shaft and we are not happy about it.

in a myriad of ways, yes.

keylock71 2008-03-28 04:26:32 PM
I guess I would be considered part of "Generation X"...I'm actively involved in my local politics as it directly effects me and my family. I'll vote and keep up with national and international politics for obvious reasons, but I guess I'm just too cynical to think I can actually make a difference in those areas...

I'm basically a misanthropic pessimist with optimistic tendencies.

At the risk of making sort of a generalization, absolutely everyone born after 1980 is a dangerous, overmedicated, soulless sociopath.

My generation, the one in question, seems to be pretty apathetic and mostly stupid. Frankly, I'd be afraid of their political thoughts. They put the "me, Me, ME!" 80s generation to shame...

Maybe, but for all their campus political activism, the 18-24 age group does not turn out to actually vote like the older folks do. In 2004, though their turnout surged compared to 2000, 47% of the 18-24 year olds voted. 73% of those aged 55-74 voted. (pops to PDF file)

Trust me, politicians know this.

you just spelled out exactly what i'm talking about.

the generation in question, at the absolute earliest, people born in 82, were old enough to vote in 2000. not a lot of turnout? not surprised, we were in high school. plus, remember how inspiring the bush v gore election was (sarcasm).

in 2004, the rest of this generation in question was able to vote, and the oldest of the generation weren't in high school anymore, and voting surged. and this was in the awe inspiring bush v kerry election... again, sarcasm.

i'd imagine quite a few more of us vote this time around.

You're an Echo Boomer, like me. Or a millennial. I hate "Gen Y". It's by far the most insulting, least applicable, and worthless moniker since Gen X.

Psst, there was an election in 2002

Kids aren't more politically knowledgable today, they are more "active" only in the sense that protests are cool.

Instead of sitting around saying fark the man to piss of their parents they now read blogs that say fark the man and blame the US and their parents for what is wrong in the world.

doyner [TotalFark] 2008-03-28 05:45:34 PM
When you kids show up and swing an election then we'll talk. Until then you're just another group of immature punks that are all talk and no action--like the rest of us were when we were your age.

This Gen-Xer says: Bravo Sierra. Bravo Foxtrot.

And in a more generous vein: You have much to learn, young Grasshopper. Everyone thinks they are wise about politics and thinks they can change the world when they're in their 20's. Then they hit their 30's and discover the same crap we discovered:

You're not. You can't. Because politicians don't really run the world, corporate drones and bureaucrats do, and elections don't change squat. Surprise!

/It's not apathy. It's rank cynicism. You'll develop it in time.

The boomers started strong in the 60s with political activisim, civil disobedience, good drugs, free love, prolific sex, and turned into a bunch of conservitard pussies.

We understand this.

Hey, when you figure that out, let me know. I think '75 is a swing year, where if we were retro and hung out with older friends or siblings, we tend GenX, but if we were immature or late bloomers, we're GenY. So confused. I do know that we're just biding our time until the boomers croak. In surfing, it's sometimes called 'duck diving'. The dude abides...

not to worry good sir. you are a gen x-er, thru and thru. if you grew up loving the original star wars movies, and was aware of Boy George at the time, you are Gen X.
