People will spend it on crap. That's the American way. If I were the Sam's Club, I'd be stocking up on big screens right about now.

I'm not saying that people aren't planning on using it to pay down debt, save or invest. I'm saying that what Americans plan to do with their money and what they actually do with their money is often very different.

This stimulus package will only work if there are people stupid enough to go out and buy stuff with it.

The in-laws are planning on getting a Wii with the money instead of putting the money towards their debts. I better not hear them whine anymore about having no savings.

I'll be using it to make a dent in the amount of money owed to the state to get my driver's license back.

The word is, the checks start coming in April, right?

And if they have direct deposit information, from your tax return, they'll use that?

My tax return was filed with an HR Block account number, so that they could deduct their fees from the return. And the IRS decided they weren't going to give me anything anyway.

So I wonder how that will work? Or will the IRS just keep my 'rebate' and put it towards the tax debt they have me listed for?

Recap from previous threads:

- This program, if as successful as the 2001 rebate, will buy 2 months worth of normal job creation

The job creation estimate is based on:

- 20-25% of the money handed out went towards new spending in 2001

- The rest was invested into savings or debt

Debt and the cost of living have both jumped since 2001, so I predict it will be less successful than 2001. The figures they are quoting are grandstanding that you are supposed to forget by the time the results are measured because we'll all have bigger problems on our minds by then

h to the 'ojo: Debt and the cost of living have both jumped since 2001, so I predict it will be less successful than 2001.

This really only depends on who the debt increase went to. If people in debt just got more in debt there is a chance they would still spend this money on stuff they don't need but if people who weren't in debt are now in debt they probably will spend the money on their debts.

For the short-sighted person you propose to be a greater proportion of this rebate-pool, they respond most to their daily costs. Food, gasoline, utility bills, etc. so I would expect them to pay down debt or save more today than in 2001.

Even if all the money goes to new spending, despite every recipient carrying debt, it makes no net difference to the economy. It would be one step more of borrowing from the future to spend today. Whether or not the debtor or the creditor ultimately pays the bill, does not matter to the overall economy.

Sabyen91 [TotalFark] 2008-03-28 12:53:56 PM
Even if everybody spends their check on disposable goods it won't help. It will funnel up to the corporations and corporations are not expanding right now because they are no more optimistic about the economy than anybody else (even though they are the only ones that can fix it). Enjoy the rising inflation after this short-sighted "stimulus package".

Shaggy_C 2008-03-28 01:05:19 PM
jcooli09: This will create 0 jobs.

That's simply not true. It will create some jobs - we live in a closed system, and by adding new money, you have more available. Eventually it will be spent in some way and will end up in the hands of a company that will use it to pay for new jobs. How quickly this happens is to be debated. The number will be nowhere as high as this moran claims, but it's most definitely not '0'.

I went to Wal-Mart yesterday and bought some groceries. Bought the Wal-mart brand gallon of milk and it what close to $3.75. The name brand stuff was $5.98. Everything else was %50 to %100 higher than it was not that long ago.

I put half a tank of gas into my Toyota and it was $40.

By the time that $600 check gets here it's not going to be worth the paper it was printed on.

I think this advance on our taxes is stupid.

I'm going to make sure to spend it in Europe this summer while on vacation. And spending it in cash, so I don't end up giving the credit cards the 3% foreign exchange fee.

Shaggy_C 2008-03-28 01:07:44 PM
LessO2: I think this advance on our taxes is stupid.

Don't be silly, this is not going to count against your income tax next year. If you mean deficit spending as an advance on future taxes, then yes, yes it is.

Yes, it will end up creating jobs under of the contractor who builds some CEO's new mansion.

They are giving no one money, they are borrowing from future-taxpayer to distribute money to current-citizen. In effect they are borrowing on international markets, using their good name to borrow at rates cheaper than a consumer could get, and distributing out the money. Of course this debt must be paid eventually, whenever that happens the then-taxpayer will pay for it.

Unlike in the past, US debt has grown so fast and to such a high level that creditors demand a balanced budget and lowering of the debt to gdp ratio.

No, your lender is actually firing people left and right because they a) are being hit with INSANE charges of collusion and b) they can't secure enough money for next years loans.

The student lending industry is taking a huuuuuge hit right now. Some of you laugh and point, but that doesn't help the 18 yr old pay his tuition.
